So I have a golf outing for work coming up in a couple of weeks and I need some advice on what to wear. I work for a very conservative business, one where you have to wear a suit to work every day, and from the chest down to the waist, I am covered in tattoos.

I was thinking of wearing your typical khaki cargo shorts and a white long sleeve polo shirt. Is this typical wear for people at the golf course and will it be the best items to wear on a potentially hot day?

Thanks

Yes, outside of the cargo shorts. If you want to dress comfortably I would suggest getting some bermuda shorts. They are much lighter than cargo shorts and also way more stylish.

Yeah, go bermuda shorts or khaki shorts(no pockets on the legs) on the golf course. Cargo shorts are much less formal, they're like the t-shirt of shorts. Bermuda/khaki shorts go better with a polo.

Is a baseball cap (MN Twins "TC") ok or do I need to purchase a golf brand hat? I also have agrey driving hatthat could work or should I just suck it up and not wear one. I really don't want to have to buy a Taylor Made or whatever hat that I will only wear once a year.

I doubt anyone's going to be offended that your hat isn't a golf branded hat. However, most private courses have a policy of no men's hats in the clubhouse, so take it off when you go in for dinner/drinks after. And yeah, cargo shorts wouldn't be considered proper golf attire. As far as the shirt goes, depending on the material you might show a ton of sweat staining on it. You might want to swing by Golf Town or whatever passes for a golf shop there and pick up a shirt and shorts/pants.

Definitely wear some sort of poly blend material Polo. Straight cotton polo will be drenched by the end of the round.

Go to Kohls for some cheap golf wear.

Where are you golfing? One country club I belong to doesn't allow shorts period on the golf course and this is the deep south (welcome to the poorest state in the union). Cargo shorts would really be a no no in my opinion in a business deal and I really only see them on the public courses, and the crappy ones at that. I will say courses that allow shorts normally have a minimum leg length in inches, most of them allow it but I have seen in the list that cargo shorts are not allowed depending on the course. If you know the course you can go to thier weibsite and it will specifically tell you what is acceptable on the course and what is not. Even public courses have it listed.

So basically find out where you are playing and look it up to be safe.If it's a country club and you show up not properly dressed they'll let you know. Normally the help that unloads your bag will let you know and they will sell you the most expensive item in the pro shop to make you come up to minimum and normally charge it to whoever you came with, which really makes friends fast lol. I had a friend buy me a new belt on his account since I normally don't golf in a belt.

As an example, this is the dress code for the course across the road from me and it's a public course at a state park in the deep south just to give you an idea.

Proper golf attire includes a collared shirt. Sweat pants, regardless of color or style, are not proper golf attire. Shorts of a suitable length (16 in.) are permissible. Ladies may wear a golf shirt with shorts, skirts, or slacks. No sleeveless shirts or bathing attire will be permitted. Non-metallic spikes, tennis shoes, or soft soled shoes are mandatory.
This is the other club I belong to (Yes P. Diddy and I belong to the same country club - a redneck and P. Diddy, and Shaq used to) which allows shorts, the other one does not but the rules aren't posted online.

Golf attire is appropriate in the 19th Hole, Couples Lounge or Ladies Grille. Shorts must be must be mid-thigh or longer for both men and women. Cargo shorts/pants are not recommended. Golf attire includes a collar shirt with the exception of collarless golf shirts commonly sold in golf shops. Denim jeans are not appropriate attire on the practice facilities or the golf course. Shorts are permitted at any time. The use of metal spikes is prohibited on the practice facilities and golf course.
If it's not posted online call and ask, especially if it's a country club. Not as a member but I did golf at a club as a guest of a fortune 500 CEO once that the dress requirements were mailed to me when they set a tee time to make sure I met it and on the list were no visible tattoos and also included a list of non acceptable colors. But I could never afford to golf there except as a guest and it really wasn't about the golf. Basically I just stood around and tried not to quote caddyshack. So basically you'll see everything from that to the minimum which normally is "no denim, no halter tops, and men must have sleeves"

If it's a country club or even a nice public course, tuck your shirt in. Even the public courses here have that on the list and normally the nice ones have you must wear socks. I personally don't wear a belt, because I hate belts, but I tuck my shirt in every time. I've never seen any mention of the hat, I wear a baseball cap every time. Doesn't matter if it's golf related or not, I normally wear a white LSU oriented sports team baseball cap.

If it's just a group of guys from work you know and you are just out to play golf you can get away with a lot less. If it's "business related" pr charity related you might want to dress a little nicer especially if they are super conservative. I work in jeans and boots and I try to dress nice when playing with the owner of the business I work at, and he wears the same jeans and boots I do every day at work. Not sure about guys who wear business suits. I'm 43 and I don't know if I know anyone personally who wears a suit everyday. Golf is one of those funny things where a lot of guys just want to get out there and drink a beer and hit the ball and bullshit all day, but then there's a fair number of guys who take it ULTRA serious and will dress for it. If you can ask one of them it might help. I normally try to ask if I get invited with people I don't know or don't know well.

Well that's basically everything I know about mens fashion in general and thought I would never post in this thread.

Yup there are shorts and shirts there for $14 each that you could play on nearly any course in the country and the shirts are pretty comfortable if you are out doing something else.

If you have a wider chest, I think you can't go wrong with izod polos. They're not super cheap, nor too expensive (3 for 50 if on sale). Great golfing wear, they're designed to be worn in the sun/heat. I think you'd look very out of place with a long-sleeve shirt on unless it's super chilly that day (sub 60). Even for a conservative business, I'd say tattoos are preferable to looking foolish. If it's below 80, just wear khaki pants (light ones, not heavy/thick ones that you'd wear in winter). If it's greater than 90, and if you're actually going to be golfing, for sure wear shorts, you don't want to be sweating uncomfortably.

I'm assuming you've never golfed before? I'd recommend practicing a bit (driving range is cheap) before you embarrass yourself too badly on an actual course. Baseball caps are quite alright.

The old adage that money lets you get away with everything is true. Ever see the movie pretty woman? The people enforcing the rules at a golf course only care about the size of your credit limit, not what you look like, but it's the same as rules #1 and #2 for dating. If you follow rules #1 and #2 no one is going to complain about your tattoos showing on your arm underneath your nice, properly fitting shirt.

Golf courses are so weird. I went to one that was $30 to get in but god forbid you don't wear proper golfing attire.

Lol sorry, since my medical deal I've typed a lot of weird things. I had to go back and edit the first sentence because I had "were are you playing".

*shrug*

It's a gentleman's game, and there's a certain expectation of the proper uniform/dress. Especially if it's business related. Not really much different than any other sport, actually. And quite honestly, the average person has fucking terrible taste and would be showing up in jogging pants or a tracksuit if they could.

This place just became my Baby Jesus of clothing stores:J.Hilburn

They literally take all time/frustration/annoyance out of the clothing shopping process. One of their "stylists" comes to visit you along with some samples and a binder of fabrics, she takes your measurements, you pick your styles/colors/fabrics, and they ship you all your stuff custom tailored within a few weeks. I literally did all my summer clothing shopping from a conference room at my work. No driving to the mall, parking, browsing, trying shit on, leaving stuff to be tailored, etc. They take care of it all. Also, once they have your measurements in their system, you can just login to their website and choose different fabrics/styles and everything is custom made to your size.

In my experience, most private clubs don't even have beer carts (unless it's an outside tournament that day). That shit is uncouth!

And seriously, a $300 jean aficianado is making fun of golf fashion?

My club recently has started allowing jeans in the clubhouse, and the world hasn't ended. The door is slowly opening, bro.

Does your club allow for a denim shirt while wearing denim pants? I hear that is a formal tuxedo up north. Seems racist to not let it!
