I never really got going with the Persona games but having seen all the praise this is getting makes me want to give this a go. Looks pretty daunting from the outside from a JRPG novice, though.

Please stop bro.Dammit, I'm probably gonna have to play this aren't I?
Try the demo. I’ve never played anything like this and was immediately blown away. It’s overwhelming at first like every RPG that has multiple systems but the prologue does a good job of drip feeding it to you.I never really got going with the Persona games but having seen all the praise this is getting makes me want to give this a go. I'll fire this up today. The Persona games are really great.
If you play JRPG for story there's something wrong with you. Just enjoy the stupid characters for being entertaining. All JRPGs are completely batshit and otherwise nonsensical. I will die on this hill. But along the way you always run into fun and interesting events that are memorable.
The Persona 5 story? You and some dudes at high school gain magical powers that allow you to mind rape people. But otherwise attend classes and other retard teenager shit. It was great. I don't even remember the villain names.
I remember the aesthetic of the palaces. Which absolutely were memorable. I could care less about the villains themselves.Without even looking:Kamoshida, Madarame, Kaneshiro, Wakaba, Okumura, Sae Nijima, Shido, Yaldaboath, Maruki.
All were memorable in their own way. the Persona 5 story was "dumb" sure but it was still a good story.

Yeah I have yet to get around to playing P5 royale.i'd love to play this game but Atlus loves to fuck around and re-release a Royal/Deluxe/Ultimate edition of their game a year later that is not compatible with the previous editions saves, adds 30% new content, and requires you to rebuy the game.
this seems ripe for that sort of treatment, or is this more like Yakuza where its a one and done I wonder
I assume you can't "bank" time in this game right? so if I have 10 days to go to the cathedral I should just spend as much as I can doing stuff before going there because those 10 days are just going to go away? Other than taking the advice from earlier and skipping the side dungeon until after...The only thing the demo won't give you experience with is the calendar system, so if that is what really kept you back from Persona you may still run into some hang ups. I only say some because the system in this also seems more relaxed and less constrained. I still get the feeling I'm missing something or making the wrong choice when advancing time, which irks the min/max and completionist in me, just constantly feeling like it isn't the right time to do that or I should spend it elsewhere, but I'm kind of just letting it ride here and having a better time.

It's actually far more accessible to non-SMT/Persona fans because there's no fusion to worry about. Though be warned, the inability to create godtier personas makes anything above normal difficulty a major challenge.I never really got going with the Persona games but having seen all the praise this is getting makes me want to give this a go. This isn't entirely true. If you're actually ranking up a follower I think you can say whatever you want and it doesn't matter besides getting shorted on MAG. However, when you're doing the "spend time" activities, giving right vs. wrong answers is absolutely the difference between getting +4 to your royal stat or missing out on at least one point (never tried giving all bad answers to see if you only get +2 for really screwing up). I always save before those and reload if I get less than +4.Giving the right answer in conversations give Magla instead of extra points.
Eh, my MC has been a mage for almost every fight so far. Just a couple where I swapped to healer, and for mimic fights it was a no-brainer to use merchant. Every single level-up stat point I've gotten has been put into magic. It's really only an issue when you run into something which nulls or repels everything an archetype can do. Even then there's usually the option to use inheritance to fix the problem, and the only time I've had to make major changes is when something is immune to all three physical damage types. The battle system in this game suffers immensely from strength/weakness bonuses. The bonuses are way too much to the point you essentially have to keep swapping out your archetypes over and over to get anything done. You can't just say "Oh I feel like doing a mage playthrough". The depth of the system is great as it always is in Atlus games but the depth is almost meaningless because of how exaggerated it is. The illusion of choice.
I can see from reading about it here but otherwise don't know what the calender system is. I will give the demo a try and and watch Asmon play it.The only thing the demo won't give you experience with is the calendar system, so if that is what really kept you back from Persona you may still run into some hang ups. Another way to get around fights where one character is mostly useless is by using the accessory from Gloamhall that lets that character act twice in a row. That way it's much less wasteful to just pass every turn the useless one gets. Or just toss some consumables, since they're actually quite strong.
