I'm still torn about the weapons >_< I want to choose something and get good with it, but the general response from everyone is "All the weapons are viable". Then, I see you guys talking about how hammers just don't work well on most of the higher end stuff, or my googling nets me that sword and board is bottom tier. Now I'm watching Jin's video's and going "That looks crazy" and I'm guessing that no other weapon comes close to what he's doing? But maybe that's a solo only setup and those explosions would just be murdering your own teammates?

To me, the Insect glaives look super fun, flying all over the place doing murder. I don't see anyone actually using them in anything I've watched though, does that mean they aren't super viable? I really don't want to be the guy who shows up and everyone rolls their eyes because ohh look, a glaive user. I'm sure I'm over analyzing all of this >_<

On a quick side note, I see people saying that difficulty wise, there is no difference between 2-4 players? Meaning, if I wanted to play with a friend, who would be severely hamstringing ourselves by not bringing two rando's with us?

I think it's basically the difference between what's good and what's viable. Everything is viable and can be used, but that doesn't mean everything is balanced the same. Especially in solo setting, some weapons are not gonna be as good, and some weapons are gonna be worse/better for certain monsters specifically due to their moveset and weakness. That said it's my understanding that you can basically pick any weapon, and kill everything in the game within the time limit. It's just some weapons will do it faster/easier.

Mind you, I haven't really kept track of much about the game, but that seemed to be what I read in general when people ask what weapon to pick.

Dude, just try shit out. I used hammer for a solid 75 hours and had a lot of fun with it. If you really only care about killing shit as fast as possible its, Longsword, Bow, Heavy Bow, Greatsword. But even SNS can kill the toughest shit in 5 minutes if you git gud. Hammer specifically sucks on two monsters. Deviljho and Anjanath. Those two are just fucking TERRIBLE to fight with the hammer. But then I just used Charge Blade or Lance and it was fine! Diablos is also kind of shitty with the Hammer but the fight is completely trivialized if you use Lance, Charge Blade or Sword and Shield.

Insect Glaive's big drawback is that monster roars take you right out of the sky so you have to run full Earplugs (5 slots) to negate that. Which is 5 slots you can't use to run damage. But the glaive is still a lot of fun. You also need to craft a lot of dash juice which is hard when you're starting out.

There is no friendly fire. Your damage and explosions, "trip" people which is annoying because it ruins any combo you may have been doing.

All weapons are viable but some are not as good on some monsters as they are on others think of it like, "there's a tool for ever purpose and a purpose for every tool."

Some weapons excel for certain aspects of the game also, and can be switched out during the run. Take hammers for instance; they might suck against some monsters on flat ground but get that monster near a hill and hammer becomes god mode due to its sliding attack. SNS excels at support due to ease of mounting, and ability to heal/support allies on the fly since you dont have to put your weapon away to use items. Great Sword can be hard to land hits due to its wind up but can wreck something thats knocked down/slept etc..

There are clear winners in multiple categories:

DPS - Aerial Great Sword, Heavy Bow Gun, Bow - these 3 stand out and 99% of the time are capable of outperforming damage comparisons versus the other 9 types. Based on the monster you fight it can be any of the 3 that end up on top. If there is a ledge, Aerial is probably going to be fastest. If the monster can be multi stunned and put down, usually bow. If you want to be like me and have common sense to realize "why the fuck would I fight a dragon with a knife when I can shoot it with a bazooka," then go Heavy Bow Gun and I'll give you a hi-five.

Longsword, Sword and Shield, Greatsword, Rarity 8 Gunlances - tons of damage with easier skill ceilings. Longsword can ramp up in damage and dodge any attack in the game, Sword and Shield is arguably the best weapon because it has 4th-8th highest DPS, can use items without sheathing, and is insanely mobile, Gunlance is for fucking superthugs who like to get in shit's face and start facefucking nonstop. Honestly, I have not used a gunlance because I saw it before World came out and I told myself if I ever use that I know I would never use a different weapon, it's too much fucking fun, and I was right so I stay away (for now).

Hunting Horn is in a bad place right now, 50% of the time Light Bow Gun is awesome 50% of the time it's trash and it has a very high mechanics cap to play efficiently.

Insect Glaive - where do I begin. fuck it - DO NOT INSECT GLAIVE!!! Here is why, sadly - everyone sees the cool shit, the backflips the flying dragon souls the dragoon weapon from behemoth the spins the ninja stuff. IT DOESNT DO SHIT. You do 0 damage. 0. Insect Glaive is meant to sit next to a monster and spam Triangle and circle While your bug explodes stuff and you keep positioning, while mounting once or twice to drop the beast. I do fully expect some weapon changes with August 2nd since they are talking about how insane Gae Bolg is supposed to be.

Lance is fun but I don't know enough other than it is VERY defensive, as in you can sit and just chip away, kinda boring maybe but people say HBG is boring (LAWLLL).

Hammer is retardedly good anytime you can find a hill. Like stupid need a nerf broken.

Monsters have set HP based off multipliers that are loaded when you load into a mission of any type. Having 2-4 players (doesn't matter how many) multiplies the HP by 2.2-2.6x (or as close as worldwide testing can get.)

Lance is amazing and probably my go to weapon when PC comes out (its my go to on PS4 as it is). You can chip but its heavy hitting attacks are off of its charge. Its also super easy to do aerial damage off charge/jump attacks making mounting very easy.

For the new people trying to decide what to use here is my experience, more or less in order of what I like from best to least:

-Hunting Horn just flows for me, the added support makes me feel like I am helping even when I am terrible.
-Lance loved it when I started playing(don't use it much anymore), something about the charging lance attacks really felt cool. Easy to mount monsters.
-Bow has been a staple for me all the way through my game time, and I have used it the most.
-Great Sword hated it until I got good, really satisfying weapon to land hits with.
-Hammer is what I play when I want to be lazy, spin to win.
-Gun Lance is amazing when it comes together but by far the most frustrating weapon to use for me, at least as a burst weapon. If you poke, dodge and explode it flows like the horn.
-Light and heavy bow guns feel clunky as fuck and I almost never use them.
-Dual blades are good but not for me.
-Insect glaive has the most style but not my thing.
-Sword and shield was actually the first weapon I ever used and I recommend it while you get your feet wet.
-All the rest I have literally never killed a monster with, thinking of trying a switch axe build soon.

What is so great about above is your experience will vary greatly and just when things get stale you can switch weapons and go for a new build, it is like a whole new game/way of approaching the monsters.

The Empress blast weapons are absolutely awesome for SNS, Lance, etc.

I am INSANELY proud of this. Might be best video yet. No music just the raw footage, timing took 3+ hours to figure out.

2minute 14second Tempered Vaal after dropping my HP to 1 and using Felyne Heroics and doing the entire fight dodging both all his hits and AOE, as well as stun locking him the entire time. Also both pillars get dropped on his dome piece!

That is amazeballs.

Makes me excited to stay SnS with these newer weapons I hadn't seen. I understand what he's doing, it's like Jin said they changed the meta from elemental to attack but this guy is also doing max attack + max blast and then the white sharpness on the weapon adds a multiplicative boost.

Lunastra is a fucking DIRTY SKANK. Holy shit. Her AI is completely different from any of the other Elders. Like you think she will tail swipe twice or three times? No she does four and fucks your day up. I have a full no blast, max fire resist anti-Lunastra build and still I die pretty often.

She doesn't breath fire and just.. yawns for lack of a better word randomly and often like twice then fires and fucks you up. The nova she does is a pulse unlike Teostra and it also has the hugest range EVER.

I'm getting better at her but Lunastra does not fuck around man.

If you didn't know she cant be flashed and will instead use her ulti if she has some sparks built up and gets flashed. Can use that mechanic to run away/bait the ulti to have her simmer down.

Oh yah, figured that one out a while back. Astera Jerky is my savior.
