Let's hope that Monsters & Memories is not the release name for this MMOPRG. It breaks immersion right off the bat. It sounds like an internal project name or an inside joke or a corny WoW Classic guild name. It would be like calling the Olive Garden, Pasta & Indigestion. Let's hope they change the name to something more appropriate for a fantasy MMORPG.

I think it’s an effective choice for signaling to their target market what they can expect out of the product. In a sea of options, it’s important to get customers to make the right decision with minimal input.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. I hope it launches smoothly and doesn't get sued into oblivion by whoever owns EQ these days, but the industry and market are what they are. That pic above with the NEC item and the quest being lifted straight from EQ? Well, that shit would be an absolute slam dunk for copyright infringement if this game gets any monetary success unless they have some sort of legal agreement already. Do they?

What is the judge in the copywriter suit going to look at for a 10% variation? the entire game… the details of the quest? well everyone sure everyone! I created go collect 10 bear asses, no one can do a quest kinda like it ever!

is someone going to play MnM over EQ because they /thought/ they were playing EQ? wow that Colby set of headphones, the logo is so much like Sony - I was bamboozled!

The MnM item has a different name, different stats, different effect, and is the reward from a completely different questline as the EQ item. Sounds like a slam dunk copyright case to me!

When someone says “hey this reminds me of item X from game Y” I think that is exactly what they’re going for.

Well, World of Monster Memories doesn't sound any better if you catch my drift.

I agree with it setting the expectation and tone for the target audience, it goes right with the music and how they convey their updates.

Vibe is even harder to express than immersion. Immersion you can achieve with consistency in creating the world, depth of lore that is well written and cleverly devised challenges the character faces that make you feel closer to really being a character in a world.

Giving off the right vibe is even more subjective and they've got it here. It's something I could ask for them to achieve but "how" you do it.....it's more of a "comes down to every little thing" even more than achieving the creation of an immersive world. The vibe this game gives off and how they represent their game and "here's what we hope you enjoy" to get you on that path is something they're really nailing. Nick's vision of a game that occasionally makes you put the sandwich down for big oh shit moments of excitement is something I see in every dungeon room, spawn timer and class ability. I just hope they can keep that largely unpaid enthusiasm rolling out from Night Harbor and into the rest of a massive world and it's under dark.

Excellent idea.
Ideas like this are cool but insane to implement, Horizons had the same idea with a fully water locked race and a whole different world under the water.

Designing an over and under world that fit together and presumably both have a start to max level zone would take double the current effort.

I haven't been watching the streams recently, but I caught a video where they were discussing their new streamlined workflow for making new zones. Seemed like they are gearing up to make a lot of content at an accelerated pace now that the major systems are fleshed out.

It still slow going, but you can see the acceleration of progress of filling in the world over the last year+ of stress tests. The main city was just untextured blocks in large areas for quite some time. But they finished that up, and now they seem to have a pretty filled out palette of textures and geometry to use, so knocking out new areas should be much faster.
