Brian Bran-Duin was on Abzan Midrange round 1. According to coverage he was running 4x Sorin and possibly 0 Elspeth?

Bloodsoaked Champion doing loads of work.

Azban midrange looking strong early doors but fading later. Sarkhan doing even better than expected. Lots of G devotion.

I'm hoping to play this deck at FNM tomorrow if the cards arrive in time... so much fun online:

Outlast
Creature (24)
4x Favored Hoplite
4x Soldier of the Pantheon
4x Phalanx Leader
4x Ainok Bond-Kin
4x Abzan Falconer
4x Fabled Hero

Instant (16)
4x Ajani's Presence
4x Ephemeral Shields
4x Gods Willing
4x Feat of Resistance

Land (20)
20x Plains

It's mono white 3 cmc or less heroic/outlast creatures with 16! protection spells.

Here is a little write up of my last game with it, with two hilarious kills:
Just played a really fun game against rabble red online:

Game One: Kept a land heavy 6 and only drew lands, with 20 land you can't really blame the deck. Oh well learn to mulligan?

Game Two: He tapped out to get me down to 2 life and passed the turn, luckily he had no burn spell but I was going to die to mass Goblin Tokens next turn. I then cast three protection spells on my Fabled Hero in his turn just to give it 4 +1/+1 counters. I untap and play Ajani's Presence to give it another +1/+1 counter and another +1/+1 from the spell. With my Soldier of the Pantheon that is 18 damage, exactly his life total! Even a blocker wouldn't have helped since I had two sources of protection from red.

Game Three: With a 3/2 War-Name Aspirant and a 3/2 enchanted Foundry Street Denzien, I was already at 11 life and it was Turn 3. I was dead next turn.
I had an untapped 2/1 Ainok Bondkin and 1/1 Phalanx Leader, no counters on either.

So he attacks and I block, convoking Ephemeral Shields in responce to the attack on the Phalanx Leader giving them both first strike and power enough to kill both attackers.
He then convokes Stoke the Flames to kill the Phalanx Leader and save the Foundry Street Denzien.
So I use my one mana open to cast Ajani's Presence...

He lost two creatures, an enchantment and a spell. My four cards worth now leave me with a 4/3 and 3/3 both with First Strike, and Flying when I played Azban Falconer next turn. He left the game.

I suspect that this deck could be viable but even if it isn't, these situations seem to happen in every game and are too entertaining to pass up.
Btw, Seeker of the Way would be decent in that deck.

Yeah could be sideboard if Ainok Bond-Kin isn't going to get much use out of First Strike, or even a 2/2 split or something.

My win rate is really high with this thing so far.

Posted the following on QS, First day SCG NJ summary :

Top 8 :

rrr_img_77037.png

The top 8 are even split - four decks being heavy green and four heavy red.

Four of the top 8 are running heavy Green with full play sets of Elf/Caryatid/Courser and 3 of those using 8 Hornet Queen between them. These decks are running 26, 31, 33 and 35 creatures with 3 of them main decking 3, 4 and 4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx to pump Polukranos, World Eater with all four running a full playset in their main deck !

The other top four are all running Goblin Rabblemaster, three main decking full play sets and Jon Goss with 3 in his sideboard in Mardu Midrange. All four red decks start with at least two Sarkhans main decked. Two are running Stormbreath Dragon in their side board.

Interesting screenies I put together :

THE FOUR RED DECKS

THE FOUR GREEN DECKS

rrr_img_77039.jpg

What didn't make it :

Abzan not doing great, not one through to the second day, with the 6 decks running it coming in 15, 17, 21, 26, 29, 30.

Heavy black decks did not make their anticipated impact, with only 3 in the top 32 coming in at 14, 22, 32.

Honorable mention :

Chandra, Pyromaster in four out of the top 8 decks.

Note that although Nissa is in four of the decks three of them are only running 1.

Top 32 deck :Magic Deck Search Result!

The quarter finals are :

Jeskai Tempo vrs Mono Green Devotion (Jones v Manner)

G/B Devotion vrs G/R Devotion (Merriam vrs Kvartek)

G/R Monster vrs R/W Control (Martinez vrs Fulk)

Merriam looks to have lucked into his best in-cut match-up for the first round of top 8. 10 X/1s, no reclamation sages. Heavy on the Hornet Queens. Doomwakes should do work. It'll be interesting after-board, with a full 4x Setessan Tactics.

Deflecting Strike is a real card. With the size of the beaters nowadays it probably averages out to a Boros Charm with upside most of the time.

In the battle of Green devotions Merriam beats Kvartek 2-1 which the combination of Pharika, God of Affliction pumping out +1/+1 deathtouch snake tokens and Nylea, God of the hunt giving them trample and +2/+2. Crucially he is also playing Eidolon of Blossoms which gives him a card draw every time he has an enchantment enters the field - with both Pharika and the snake tokens being enchantment creatures.

Jones pulls 4 Mantis Rider and two Disdainful Stroke in his first 11 cards in the second game of the semi against Merriam. Jones Jeskai Tempo beats Merriams G/B devotion in the first semi. Goss Mardu beats Martinez G/R monsters in the other semi.

Final is Jeskai tempo vrs Mardu midrange. Both main decking 4 Rabblemasters and 2 Sarkhan. Butcher of the Horde vrs Mantis Rider.

First game Jones pulls 2 Mantis in his first 9 cards, Goss Thoughtseizes one of them. Seeker of the Way does some work and incoming Sarkhan takes the first game. 1-0 Jones Second game Goss goes turns 4-7 without being able to play a land. Final is over 2-0 Jones with 21 minutes on the clock.

Mantis Rider is without doubt the breakout card of the tournament and getting bought out everywhere right now.

Mantis Rider being bought out to the surprise of no one, said Lightning Angel fans everywhere. I should've just drafted Jeskai last night after opening it AND a foil Jeskai Ascendancy (in two different packs).

Dig Through Time seeing play makes R&D happy, I'm sure. There's an amusing discussion about it vs. Treasure Cruise on MTGSalvation still.

I grabbed 4 foil Mantis Riders when I saw the nonfoil ones spiking. Got them at 5 dollars, gonna be trading them at like 15-20 by next week I'm sure.

The card has serious legs in standard for the next 18th months I'm sure, but I've been looking at various Modern brews with it. I think it's good enough despite the lack of a 4th toughness. Trading 1 for 1 with bolts isn't the end of the world.

I didn't buy Mantis Rider when it was 1.50 and felt dumb about it but went ahead and bought a set for 10 yesterday after watching a Jeskai burn a Mana Confluence aggro deck right out of the game in the fourth round of the tournament. In the span of like thirty minutes on eBay all of the Rider playsets at 8 disappeared, then the ones at 9 disappeared, but there was still support at the 10 dollar range.

Should have bought two playsets at 6 each like my gut told me to.

edit - fuck, didn't even think to check out foils while the regulars were popping. Curse my noobness!

4x Monastery Swiftspear, 4x Treasure Cruise? In my Legacy? It's more likely than you think.

I knew Treasure Cruise would be a thing in Modern/Legacy.

Swiftspear though... hah, I guess...

Turns out it's really good. It might not look like it, but it's pretty much a Goblin Guide. Swinging with a 2/3 is trivially easy, and he survives quite a bit. That extra point of toughness is pretty much.

edit: Holy shit at Glittering Wish up to $20. Either that's going to be Fist of Suns 2.0 or we're looking at a new modern combo deck.

I told a friend about this post, and he didn't have the best review of it.

"standard sucks, they're talking about standard with a little legacy. I play modern"

He's a huge Magic nerd, so I wanted him to chime in on your discussion, but he doesn't like what you're talking about. Well, Wuyley just mentioned modern, but he hasn't seen much else. He invested $400 on new cards last night for his next deck. He builds decks constantly. I asked his favorite card, and he said it's too broad a question, but if he had to guess it would be Birthing Pod.

His favorite type of deck is "usually the non interactive decks like eggs, storm, or burn i have the most fun playing but if i want my opponent to actually play the game something like melira pod or delver is better. they are super interactive. they're going to say i'm a bad person because of eggs storm and burn, but whatever."

The Goblin Guide comparison is a bit off. A better comparison would be

Monastery Swiftspear : Treasure Cruise :: Quirion Dryad : Gush

(with a comparable drop in power level of course).
