WotC/Hasbro is in an unwinnable position.

They can do things that bring in more revenue and/or new players, pissing off older players (who generally don't buy new product anyway) and people who feel they're being bilked.
Or they can not do those things, and people will claim the game is dying because profits are down.

There is nothing WotC can do that will not piss of a huge section of the playerbase in some way, and every possible outcome of any decision will always cause a big section of the playerbase to yell "I told you so!"

Going for maximum revenue is always going to be the best strategy because as long as the game continues making money, you at least get the opportunity to stay alive to keep making new mistakes in the future.

Aside, I haven't given WotC a dime in >5 years and I still get to play MTGA for free forever because of my limited win rate and resulting wildcard situation. It is the best possible F2P arrangement for me.

Hasbro is the one in the unwinnable position. They are 100% doomed as a larger corporate entity barring some miracle of viral pop culture falling in to their lap. The only question currently is if they will entirely destroy MTG as part of their death throes.

So far all signs point to yes.

In case anyone had any doubts that Magic is actually gonna die:

Boxes contain less packs now, and don't break evenly for drafts anymore because...fuck you pay us?

The modern tournament at the upcoming Magic Fest (that costs 150$ to enter between an event badge and the tournament buy-in) contains a uh...i don't even know what to call this? Just literally shout 'IM A PAY PIG' at the top of your lungs and a judge comes and gives you a commander deck to play in the middle of your modern event?

Jesus.

I guess the true death knell will be premium secret lair Power 9 that's standard legal.

It's balanced if only one person has Black Lotus right?

You have to figure there's always a couple of suits pushing to throw the reserved list in the garbage.

Eventually the distance between the people that made those decisions long ago and those that upheld them will be so great from the people running the joint that it's not going to make any sense to not make that money.

I read the rules and that sounds like a fun goofy side event that mashes up Modern with Planechase. Not sure what the issue is if everyone involved is onboard? You don't pay any extra money aside from the entry fee.

How many people in this thread actually play Magic in any recognizable contemporary format? How many people ever played it seriously or semi-seriously at any point after 6th edition? 10th edition?

True. I only even play legacy with friends and kids. Cause I like using all my cards lol

I can totally see them reprinting reserved list cards now as a last ditch effort.
I agree. At this point, why not?

Do a reprint secret layer that has 3 Black Lotus in it with a new art. Print thousands of cases at $750.00 a box. You could have a couple of other chase cards but it would be the black lotus that would of course be the big boy. Then rinse and repeat for the next few years with the other power nine. They are only introducing 3 more copies but I promise the sets would sell out with people hoping to get 1 of the 3. It would not devastate the market because you only added 3 more. It also would have a different artwork.

Done- pay me my royalties for the idea.

I'd love a full set of all the original ual lands. I only ever got 1 from packs. I still regret not emptying that glass case in my local card store when they were $5 each lol

If anything, I think you'd see them reprint the original duals first.
I have a full (40) SP/NM playset and having $15-$20k of value evaporate would anger me and a lot of other people.

I have somewhere in the range of $30-35k in RL cards, but some people have hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars tied up in them and reprinting the RL would spark hundreds of lawsuits.

The initial reprints would be tiny and incredibly expensive. They would barely ding prices at all. Reprinting Action Comics #1 means fuck all to the price of an original. No lawsuit would be successful.

I mean I'm not a lawyer, nor a smart man. But a company selling its product to make money be devaluing the old collectable stuff they printed years ago. Is within their right I'd guess.

A lawsuit would be pointless. The Alpha Packs would have had to state that the 9 particular cards were to never be reprinted when purchased. Even then, once Hasbro took over, Unless specified in the take-over, it would make that agreement null and void. The only way a lawsuit would have a chance is if they placed reprinted Alpha cards and claimed they were original prints. Hasbro could literally reprint cards that looked just like the Alpha Set and box them as official reprints of the Alpha Set(Playable), and produce half a million cases, and nothing would have legal bearing against it.

it would be interesting to see how well the value of the original Alpha would hold up. I imagine there would be quite the drop with some outliers for grade 9+.

That is the risk of the market.

While I'm sure they'd take the short term revenue for reasons I already outlined, I honestly don't think WotC really wants to make older formats more popular. As it is, they're having a hard time keeping Standard popular in paper now that people have unlimited access to Standard online.
