Then what makes you think Manning or Brees could? Not exactly stellar performances against the 'hawks either.

I think Brees would be alright with the backing of the Niners, you do bring up a good point about P. Manning though, you either need a good deep ball or legs to challenge Seattle's secondary and he has neither... I will have to think on this.

I think Kirun's original point was more along the lines of QB's who the Niner's could actually go get if they let Kaep walk. That's the real sticking point with all these contracts. Its not like Cutler is worth his money either, but where the hell else are they going to go? The draft just isn't reliable enough at QB, especially when you are picking in the bottom half, and some years it doesn't matter where you're picking. Even the hidden gems often don't materialize as starters immediately either.

Ok not sure why I didn't notice this before either, but you really trust RG3 to get past the division too? More than Eli who's a proven performer in playoff pressure?

Anyone who thinks Eli sucks is just blinded by the stupidity that usually occurs on the internet. He's easily one of the best QB's playing in the league right now.

This. There are plenty of average-decent QBs in the NFL that could probably take us near/to a Super Bowl. The thing is, none of them are unrestricted free agents.

So, again, who are these mediocre QBs that are going to lead the 49ers on deep playoff runs..

Matt Flynn!

I actually expect average to almost-great things from Kirk Cousins once the Redskins trade him to somewhere.

I loathe Eli. I don't think he sucks, but I wouldn't call him 'easily one of the best'. I guess that depends on how many QB's are eligible to be the best? Top ten? I might be able to squeak him into a top ten, but not the top five.

Alex Smith vs. Eli Manning? - Smith by a red pubic hair.

As others have said, talking about all these other guys is kind of moot since they are not available. If you're not going to pay the quarterback you have, your only real choices are to try to steal somebody's promising backup, rehabilitate some guy that has failed on another team, or draft somebody and bet the whole season on a rookie.

Jim Harbaugh is going to start himself at QB midway through next season.
