NFL 2014 Off-Season Thread

More elite than Alex "1 and done" Smith. Anyhow, I'd like to see us get some more depth at CB and OL. OL won't stay intact forever and we're weak at CB, outside of Brown. Brock has stepped it up, but he still makes a lot of mistakes in coverage.

Nah, you're the one rustled, bro. A trip to the Super Bowl, NFC title game, and a chance to do it all again next season. Meanwhile, the Chiefs schedule is going to get tougher and we all know how well they do against quality opponents.

Do people seriously still not know how this shit works? KC will be playing a 2nd place AFC schedule next year, meaning that the only difference in their schedule over the other AFC West teams will be fucking Pittsburgh, Tennessee and the motherfucking Jets (take away whichever team is from the division that the AFCW is matched up against next year, of course, as every AFCW team will also be playing that team).

Edit: The point being that their schedule really isn't getting much "tougher" or anything of the sort. I still hope they go 0 - 16.

They play the NFC West and AFC East next season, that was more my point. I get that their in conference opponents won't be that rough(although I think Pittsburgh is going to be a lot better, possibly the Titans as well, with Whisenhunt and Locker back).

Curious to see what the 49ers do for the receivers. Are they going to bring Boldin back and draft another WR with a high pick (which they haven't had much luck with recently), and give them a year to learn, or do they go for a CB or SS? Their DB's were clearly the weak point on an amazing defense this year, so they are going to have to address that. As for receivers I know there is some hope in Quinton Patton, but I haven't seen much to be impressed. Will see how he develops in the off-season I guess.

Carlos Rogers is all but certainly going to be released because he is such a huge hit on the cap for what they get out of him. Then of course they have the looming contract coming up for Kaepernick. I really hope they don't give him one of these $100 million dollar deals. That is just too much for what they get out of him, unless he shows some crazy improvement next year, but I don't have high hopes for that.

The 49ers should still be in a good position going into next year, but I just don't know if they can make it back to the title game yet again. It is difficult to maintain that kind of success in the NFL these days. Ah well, we have a whole year to discuss it I suppose.

Butthurt 49ers fan reporting in. Wish I could view the NFCCG objectively for the great game it was, but I can't yet. Hoping 49ers don't end up like 2000s Eagles and get 0 titles despite being a top contender for a long period of time.

Zimmer's track record speaks for itself, and he should be judged exclusively on his merits. Since he first became an NFL defensive coordinator in 2000, his units have consistently ranked near the top of league. Upon his arrival in Cincinnati in 2008, the Bengals defense improved from 27th in the league the previous year to 12th in his first season, and finished as a top-10 defense in four of his next five seasons as their defensive coordinator. The Bengals have made the playoffs in each of the past three seasons, and Zimmer's defense is the primary reason. OK, so he's a good defensive coach. But how does that make him head coaching material?
Here's the short answer: He knows football, he's adaptable and resilient, he's unapologetically confident in his decision-making, and most importantly, he commands the respect of the men he leads.
Let me explain.
Every coach should "know" football. That's part of the job description. But certain coaches have a knack for the feel of the game and have a mastery of game situations. I would consider Zimmer one of those coaches.
When he was my defensive coordinator and position coach with the Dallas Cowboys in 2005, I remember watching game film with him one afternoon in his office. I can't remember who the upcoming opponent was, but I remember sitting there quietly listening to him talk through calls as each play ran on the projector screen.
I felt like I had a front-row seat to his game-day thought process, as he was essentially thinking out loud. And it wasn't the defensive calls he was making that I found overly impressive. Anyone who "knows" football can run through a call sheet and match it up with the corresponding game situation. But what I found uncanny was his ability to correctly and specifically predict what each offensive play would be, one after another.
After about 25-30 plays of him making offensive predictions with roughly 90 percent accuracy, I called "bull-s--t" and told him he had either watched this tape a dozen times already or that he was simply reading the offensive plays from his monitor.
So he offered to switch seats with me. I sat in his chair in front of the monitor and pulled up the archives to search for a film of that week's opponent that wasn't part of the regular six-to-eight-game breakdown that most teams evaluate each week during the season. I randomly selected a game from early the previous season, hit play, and watched him work his magic. After watching a series or two to get a feel for the game, he started reciting the ensuing offensive plays again, one after another.

Stop it. All of these good things being said about Zimmer is giving me that feeling that I get when the preview for a movie blows me away, my expectations for it go through the roof, and then I realize that it will never live up to those expectations.
Someone come in here and tell me why Zimmer is going to be horrible.

His defense will excel but unless they get a QB worth half as much as his contract they're going to suck for a bit. But a good defense can get you to 8-8 easy with AP on your team.

The Chiefs lost despite Smith playing great. The 49ers made it to the NFC title game despite Kaepernick playing like complete dogshit every game. Eventually their luck ran out, and the defense could no longer compensate for Colin "0-1 TD, 175 passing yards, and 3 turnovers per game" Kaepernick.

I really hope the 49ers start splitting time with their backs next season. We have to figure out if it's going to be Hunter or Lattimore that replaces Gore.
