I see nothing from the Cowboys that makes me think they should be the favorite. Unless we are just using last year as our bench mark? Both teams(my eagles) have new people at key positions. I need to see a few games from them first. I'm still not convinced they are ok at RB and that was key to their success last year. Romo threw the ball a lot less, I think I read less than Kyle Fucking Orton? Murray was such a huge part of that offense and allowed them to play more conservative and to not rely so much on romo. I'm not sure They can get away with that this year. I'll be the first to admit that I'm wrong once the season starts and I watch a few games. Right now, I'm not convinced.
Yeah but as soon as Murray slowed down and people keyed off him, Romo took over and reminded people why he's the current franchise QB. You could argue the chicken or the egg all you want but Romo is what drives that engine. Murray's success was the combination of a dominant line, his skill, and team's fear of what Romo could do with Witten and Bryant. Now Romo's success last year was partly a product of the run game, which they had to turn to in order to try and keep him healthy, but he's always been statistically successful so mostly he was just staying the course. He also didn't have to do much in terms of heroics. I think I remember reading that the Green Bay loss was the first time the defense had given up the lead in the 4th quarter all year.
The only thing that changed with Dallas offensively was the loss of Murray. And as much as I enjoyed what he brought to last year's success, he wasn't going to reproduce what he did. Like I said, some of that was because of a need to focus on the run game to help Romo, but there's no such limitation this year. Meanwhile they beefed up the defense considerably which is where I think most of the success this year will stem.
Meanwhile, Kelly sidegraded his running game, let his best receiver walk, and traded his best QB for a guy who has yet to stay healthy and who has had not one, but two knee injuries. Murray is now running behind a line that no longer has its best interior lineman and wasn't all that spectacular to begin with (outside of Peters). Oh, and they let their best Defensive lineman go, their best corner go, and have a new linebacker coming off an ACL injury.
So yeah, I'm not sure where your optimism is coming from, especially since preseason success is NFL fallacy numero uno. Keep in mind that Dallas went 0-4 last preseason and again, the year Detroit went 0-16 they went 4-0 in preseason.
