it LOOKS like Gordon has matured over the past year and a half, and without any distractions will probably be awesome.

From what it sounds like it was either a free Sunday rental or 4 mil max. I haven't seen any confirmation that they don't have to pay him anything (yet) but because they cut him before Monday they atleast got 5 out of the 9 million back.
