Out of curiosity, did Nintendo ever post any user data about people using it on TV or portable? I've literally never used mine unplugged from the TV.
Dunno, but probably 90% of my use is portable, either on airplanes or in bed.

The whole Switch feels like a wierd console. Even their big name games seem to have bad performance. Like how can you not optimize a console exclusive game to not drop under 30fps.

I got loads of Roms on my Steam Deck and most run better on that with emulation than the Switch. The only thing thats annoying is caching shaders which cause stutter in some games.

Seeing the new Zelda struggle with frame rate really shows off the Switch's age. They desperately need to get next gen hardware out.

It is the engine not the system - i assume. If you played links awakening you saw the drops, and its really really odd for a style used game.

I think the engine was their b-tier team as it was a game boy game remake - i was surprised when this new game was the same, i am sure they had some people give it a once over… but imo its still a not so great system its built on is my guess

It’s why i hoped they got rid of the blur..and they kinda did, but its still there, just only on the bottom vs all 4 sides.

The first time you go into a rift, its like a “ohh” cutscene- your character is in the darn blur..

Also, i have a feeling this was a B squad game that is getting A list attention because female and “modern audiences”

Yeah but to be honest I was underwhelmed by OLED after all the hype. At the end of the day it's the same console with a more vivid slightly larger screen.

I wonder how many kids tricked their parents into getting them the Switch OLED by saying that it was more powerful and made the games look better/OLEDy on the TV, either on purpose or inadvertently due to not understanding it... I never saw the marketing clearly show that the improvement was only for portable mode and it had zero effect on TV mode.

saw the ROMs had leaked a few days ago too (4.4 gigs) and apparently running under PC too

I'm sure the game will be good, but I'd actually be excited about this if it didn't use that borderline pop figure esque kawaii~! style that so many things use. Would like to play a 3D game starring the hot Zelda from Breath of the Wild or Skyward Sword. Or better yet the super hot one from Twilight Princess. Yeah, give me one of those in a 3D "real" Zelda rather than a throwback 2D one with stubby action figure characters.

...then I wake up and remember this is the Switch we're talking about, top-down retro 2D is probably all it can reliably handle.

I hope you meant the Zelda from twilight princess not skyward sword…

You seriously going to pretend like more powerful hardware won't result in a faster frame rate, and that outdated hardware isn't an issue when it comes to games struggling to run at 30fps?

Nintendo fans are so in denial of the Switch's hardware issues it's just crazy.

Tossing it on the switch 2 would obviously make it better.

What I am saying is you have ToTK that yeah has some drops in situations, but otherwise is fine.

Then you have this one, AND links awakening remake,. There were fps issues in awakening and people where like “really? It’s not super duper graphic type thing”

I am saying it’s obviously an engine issue in the fact they have made more graphically rich and demanding games run better. The awakinging remake was most likely b squad and thus issues like this.

Can it be “solved” by pushing a ton of hardware at it? Sure can…

I don't even think it's a ton of hardware sort of thing, more like an up to date hardware sort of thing. The Switch is on laughably outdated mobile hardware. The fact that it can still run new games is impressive.

If nintendo was smart, hypothetical situation, they can release a top of the line switch 2 with full backward compatibility i.e. same everything just beefy stats, and I can see most everyone getting it that purchased a switch.

Hardware isn't their selling point but a formidable $399 or $499 unit that can play most anything out today would be fine. Then they still pump out quality games that do 60 fps and leave the CoD bros to xbox and Playstation which they aren't fighting for anyways.

Can easily see it as Nintendo stuff and make things friendly for indie devs by reducing the Nintendo tax for small dev studios and they can continue to be a player. Sony and MS can make their own AAA stuff that just gets dumped to the other system or PC and steam. Room for both sides to exist and plenty of money to be made.......if Nintendo was smart.

I mean I guess but the Wii U pretty much followed this mould. I'm not sure it's going to do super well if it's just the cell phone style iterative release but with a worse screen and costs hundreds more. Specs only matter if they're used for something. I would hope Nintendo has something else up their sleeve.

Never actually played Skyward Sword, but from the short clips I saw of it Zelda seems attractive in both that and BOTW (which I also never played). I did mention that Twilight Princess Zelda was the best, and the one I'd most like to play as in a game. She also had no issues wielding a sword (as seen in Smash Bros). Zelda using a sword is some sort of issue for Nintendo now apparently?

She had a sword in smash and she is the Twilight version.

Nintendo does not like twilight princess, it is kinda funny. They got all mad to even make it reluctantly then got mad that it did well. It was “people want a kinda gritty realistic Zelda, they got all excited by that tech demo”

We dont want to do that, we have to “do something different” - Nintendos hang up on all their main things.

And they do have kinda have a hangup on Zelda useing a sword, even in this new game its a “special mode” she goes in temporarily to use the sword.

It is a good game, its much much more forgiving than the other games but is more leaning to puzzle than even traditional ones.

It is link to the past world, apparently- in the desert you find the ruins of the link to the past desert temple

Yes, there are also Eastern Palace ruins exactly like Link to the Past to the east of the map. The world feels like a bridge between the classic Zelda games and the 3D games, for example it has both "looks" for the Zora from both generations of games, and separates them into River Zora and Sea Zora. There's also some Deku. I haven't seen any Gorons yet.

Anyway I'm enjoying the game a LOT, I was always going to get it anyway because I'm a sucker for Zelda games, but the trailers had me only a bit intrigued but I'm really digging the way you have to use your learned items to solve puzzles / reach places / figure out strategies (I'm not using the Link/Swordsman mode much at all unless on bosses where you kinda have to, I'd rather use enemies I learned to fight other stuff).

If the cutesy Link's Awakening remake graphics means we get more Zelda games like this more often, I'm all for it. Would really love a remake of Link to the Past in this fashion, it's my favorite Zelda game.

In the latest Hyrule Warriors game, Age of Calamity (which is awesome by the way, the story is great), Zelda doesn't use a sword at all, but uses her Light powers and a bow, and I think I recall she can turn into Sheik to use kunai attacks and such for some special attacks, but yeah no sword attacks.

I expected a modern Link to the Past but honestly Echoes of Wisdom is too much puzzle game for me. The flow from LTTP is not there, I don't want to pause every room, scrolling 2 minutes through my ridiculous furniture puzzle book and then build the same stupid beds over the chasm etc.

Beds are eternal.

Birds and bats own most things

It is more on the puzzle side of things in comparison to the “traditional” Zelda games

LTTP is awesome so this sounds really good...but also not good? Zelda can only swing a sword in special mode? It leaning heavily on puzzles also isn't really my jam, I'm more into the action nowayears than doddering around one room trying to hit the right eye switch.

You can fight by summoning monsters you've "learned" for your magic staff against other monsters, the more powerful enemies you can only summon one of them but you can summon several minor enemies at the same time. There's a lot of combat, it's just not done through Zelda's martial prowess.

I think they just really wanted to do something different with this new Zelda game. Hazing Zelda star in it was just one aspect, but having an entirely new approach to combat is another. Honestly I can appreciate them trying something new with this one, it makes it interesting.

Agreed. As much as I sometimes complain that Nintendo seems to always try to reinvent the wheel with new and sometimes annoying gimmicks, I really dig the original take on this new Zelda's gameplay.
