Yeah the new LCD is 120hz but I have a hard time seeing many games really taking advantage of that.
Like I said above, 120Hz on consoles is for a completely different reason than 120Hz on PC. It's all about running at 40 fps in a 120Hz container and using VRR (and DLSS in the Switch 2's case) to smooth over the rough spots.

If you want a really in depth explanation of what consoles do with 120Hz, Digital Foundry's article about Ratchet & Clank is very good: Why Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart's 40fps support is a potential game-changer

Was just at the Nintendo store in Tokyo. It was filled with Japanese children and Western adults. I think Nintendo has a good idea who their audience is and can potentially get away with this pricing.

500~ USD for the console and I'm hearing 90 USD per game?

HAHAHA fuck that...I'll wait and pirate.

Also, the news for people buying a Switch 2 primarily for a potential boost to original Switch games is not good.

The more I hear about it the more I am expecting that the only benefit most games will see is faster loading times. If that article is correct there's pretty much zero hope for anything similar to Xbox's "FPS Boost" and because of the overhead of doing back compatibility in software it may even struggle to get games that failed to hit a 60 fps target to actually do it on the new system. Will Bayonetta 3 hit 60 fps consistently, or will Falcom's Trails series actually lock to 30 fps on a Switch 2? Definitely not something you can take for granted at this point. I might still pre-order one, but I'll have my finger on the cancel button until a reputable site does some benchmarking for BC games.

Yeah given the track record of the first Switch, why in the ever loving fuck would I buy the Switch 2 at release when I can wait for the Inevitably upgraded screen version?
That and as someone who has all 3 versions of the Switch the original launch console is by far the worst. It just had quite a few annoying little issues that were fixed with the rev 2 console. The OLED felt more or less like a rev 2 with a better screen, but that launch edition just always felt kinda crappy compared to the rest. It became my "dock duty" Switch as soon as I got a revision because I just didn't like it nearly as much as a handheld.

I bet the launch Switch 2 will have a few issues that will get ironed out later.

Cyberpunk is already reported to run at 40 fps while docked and in performance mode.

Lmao. Imagine paying $500 so you can play Cyberpunk at 30fps for 90 minutes on battery.

So it's still not any good at being a home console over something like a PS5 unless you're exclusively interested in Nintendo games, and it's not nearly as good at being a handheld as the original Switch.

I guess they're banking on me really wanting to play that new DK and MK game.

Every single complaint here and afar about Nintendo console since after SNES have been essentially the same.

Where SEGA consoles? Where are NEC, NeoGeo, Atari…3DO……

Microsoft from the jump said they are loosing money on the console as a get into the market deal… perhaps the 2nd Xbox made them money but it’s a pit ever after.

While I appreciate the portable aspect of Switches, in a way I just wish Nintendo would make a normal console that doesn't have any Waggle Motion or Dongle Integration or whatever.

Very true. I think those gimmicks are very worn out by now. The only thing that can get me to buy a Nintendo console is their exclusive games.

I think it would have been a lot cooler if they split it off more, like a dedicated handheld and a dedicated home console, but I guess the hybrid console was so successful the first time they're sticking to it.

If baseline pricing was $60, then the amount of money they generate from the people who still buy it x $20 extra outweighs the people they lose from refusing to buy at retail. Since they are Nintendo sales are almost nonexistent and won't deviate "waiters" from the normal profit rhythm.

Well it is a fact that the pricing for those cartridges was dependent upon how big the games were. The bigger games were simply more expensive to make. That and is that American or Canadian or somewhere else? No dollar signs and those prices seem odd compared to what I remember being average back in the day.

I remember paying $80 for at least a couple SNES games. It basically took all my birthday money to get a single game. I have memories of agonizing over whether to get FF3 or Breath of Fire because I could only afford one.

The difference then was there were no real alternatives. It was play Nintendo or play nothing and go outside, which we all know was never a real option.

Yeah. With the low battery life and the LCD screen, the Switch 2 is an inferior home console to the PS5 and an inferior portable system to the Switch 1 OLED. Still getting it to continue to play Nintendo's big exclusives, and get a version of Metroid Prime 4 that actually looks modern and has a chance of wow-ing me the way the first did back in the day.
