the long cut version of dune is awesome, but imo starwars trilogy are better entertainment, why?

more likeable characters. (well except the ewoks-those things should be killed with impunity)

that said, remember the "experts" thought the movie(star wars) was going to tank...and then it opened........ i was 11 when it opened, i saw the movie 5 times it was unbelievable (at the time). i collected, hell i think i still have them somewhere-star wars trading cards (i used to steal them from the store) the packs that came with a stick of gum. on the back was a puzzle of different characters and or scenes. i WANTED to be a jedi. but then, i was 11

my kids all love the original trilogy btw they watched it the other day, my daughter was pissed i made her go to bed during empire.

Lynch's Dune is a good work of film as a standalone item, but as an interpretation of the actual Duniverse is incredibly flawed. I like it, yet as a fan of the entire written chronicles I also hate it. Either SciFi miniseries is better, the newer one being best IMO. The books are very heady and don't lend themselves well to film. I'd really prefer no one ever tried again because the chances of a mashed together CGI hack job are much higher than a Peter Jackson-esque respectful treatment.

Just heard the rumour that the films will focus on the old trio of Han, Leia and Luke. Not sure if they will be using the original actors or not. If they do use the old ones then... well... I fear it will be Crystal Skull all over again. I'll still go see it at the cinema. And prolly cry myself to sleep afterwards.

If I could have my way I'd just focus on the new generation and have the old cast have small roles, just for the fun, nothing more than 5 minutes of screen time though and a couple of lines, just for nostalgia's sake, and then that's that, none of them in any future movies.
This, pretty much. Calling it Crystal Skull all over again is exactly what I'm expecting too. I just can't see digging up Hamill and Fisher as a good idea. I could see Hamill being well cast but Fisher or Ford would turn this into schlock. Just make a NEW MOVIE for fucks sake, everything is so rehashed anymore.

I have a feeling this first film may be more of a transition film. I don't think they want to start a completely new story when the Skywalkers are all we've followed up to this point.

I think you guys cry too much. If they incorporate Luke and Han and Leia and it works and is awesome, why would that be bad? With literally no information to go on other than the fact that the first movie will involve those 3 in some capacity, it is probably a little early to declare the sky is falling.

Personally I am happy to see a movie take up after Jedi and give insight into what happened and where the characters are now.

The problem with the Lynch Dune is it never actually tells you what Paul's fucking power actually is. I didn't know until I read the series years later that he knew everything his ancestors/offspring saw and thought plus every possible future of every choice he makes for infinity all at once. That's a rather large thing to leave out of the movie, considering that dealing with that power is the entire fucking point of the series.

Sure, you can see him getting glimpses of conversations, or how he sees the Emperor's fleet arriving and all that. But it doesn't come close to showing his godlike omnipresence. I don't even recall if the tv series adequately explained it, because by then I had read all of the original novels and knew all about how Paul chose the path to revenge and consequences be damned. He knew how he'd wind up and the sacrifice his children would have to make to make things right and he did it anyway because fuck 'em. That's what makes Dune awesome. (for, uh, 3 books anyway)

Of course if you'd read the books then who cares, you know the backstory so you can enjoy the cool shit on screen. And Lynch put a lot of cool shit on screen. Herbert was involved with the movie as well.

I rewatched the Lynch version of Dune recently.

It really doesn't... it's not... it's just not good. It's just not.

He captures a lot of thefeelof dune, and some of the artisty (which, being David Lynch, is probably 100% what he was going for and 100% of all he was trying to do).

If you've actually read Dune then you go get super high and then you watch that movie it's OK. If you miss either of those two steps it's just sting running around talking like a fag. And some guy drinks his own pee and then his eyes turn blue.

Its been a little bit but I'm pretty sure there's a part where they explain what the water of life does and then later Paul drinks it. So that and most stuff is at least inferred, although not really outright explained at the same time as later events happen. But its David Lynch, the movie had more exposition than he probably wanted in the first place. Can't really expect him to make things easy to understand, although that project needed it to be successful. Which is why it remains a semi-arty cult flick and not an iconic SciFi classic/hit.

Dune is definitely a Sci Fi Classic as well as being a cult film. Its on every top 50 list.

I don't even know why you think it isn't. Who cares if it tanked at the BO, that doesn't even matter,

Who gives a shit. The movie on it's own merits is epic. There is no other Sci Fi movie out there like that one.

The fact that it leads you into reading the books afterwords is a plus.

Speaking of that, looking through the movies you like on this board you only watch animated flicks ,and Sci Fi movies haha.
This is acutely a pretty diverse group of movie goers yet you can only comment on those two genres?

You are the epitome of a nerd, please get some culture in your life.

Can't imagine anyone that has to deal with you on a daily basis if your only interests revolve around video games, sci fi, and cartoons..
You are definitely the 30 year old with anime posters in his bedroom.
