2. Play out what happens when we start a carpet bombing campaign, and what any functional NK artillery systems and nuclear devices do as we start bombing NK.
Exactly. I thought BW was kidding. "Carpet bombing" works... in the Civ series. In the real world, simply going in and dropping a shitload of bombs, even if you do it strategically, doesn't mean much if you don't back it up with ground forces. You'll never clean a place out exclusively with air strikes. And even if you did, then what? Leave the place in anarchy?

And yes, as soon as real conflict breaks out, assume the humanitarian consequences are going to be horrendous. Expect NK to fire indiscriminately at populous locations in any area they can reach. In a real conflict, they are a cornered dog and they know it. They'll go down fighting.

We're now sending land based missile defense systems to Guam to defend against a possible North Korea attack

Giving it to China seems pretty short sighted since NK is sitting on one of the richest deposits of rare earth metals in the world.

I would say give it to them with the condition we have at lease SOME rights to those deposits.

I don't think anything the US Airforce did in recent memory could be described as carpet bombing but you should probably ask some people who were in Dresden in March of 1945 what they have to say about that.

Recent strategy has been precision strikes against military and industrial targets and the occasional milk factory followed by a land invasion that meets no resistance, capped off by a hugely expensive decade-plus occupation because leaving would create a genocidal civil war that would ensnare the entire continent. Sadly after all that work the country remains sovereign because going around toppling governments and taking over countries is frowned upon by jealous haters, so we wind up spending trillions for fucking nothing.

Why do we go through the trouble then? Because some people in power profit from this. Note that I don't mean that the war provides a net profit for the American people, that would be ridiculous: we lose trillions. But waging war in this manner does provide mountains of profit for the people who own our politicians. And these job creators drive our economy by investing in real estate in China and building new factories in Mexico.

Carpet bombing, or the "glass parking lot" approach, is different because the profit comes from more long-term rebuilding efforts, as with Japan. And who the hell wants to wait 30 years for an investment to pay dividends?

(yes I turned cynicism up to 11, the real reason we don't carpet bomb anymore is because precision weaponry has so far made it unnecessary and looks better to the public, even if the media makes a huge fucking deal over every single incident of collateral damage when not that long ago we'd happily bomb half a city to hit one factory)

I thought there was no chance of NK being daft enough to start hostilities but them closing the industrial park to SK workers is a very belligerent development. Other than aid from China/Russia etc that was pretty much their only source of income to buy in the stuff they do actually import and a load of commentators had noted earlier that despite them shutting off the hotline and claiming they are back to a state of war etc they had kept that place open...

I'm not saying that they are going to do anything but the chance went from 0% to a few % imho.

I heard that factory employs 50,000 NKs, it sounds like a massive complex.

Per this they approved military action - should be interesting to see what that means.

SEOUL, April 4 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's military announced Thursday that it would take a series of military actions against the United States.

In a statement, the North's supreme military command said it is formally notifying the White House and the Pentagon that "reckless operations" involving cutting-edge nuclear weapons have been finally approved.

What the fuck is the upside in all of this for NK? A few more years in power before they are overthrown by their own military?

He can't be this deluded.

For some reason I have a feeling that he is doing on this purpose so that US/SK do curbstomp the NK military so that the NK general's power base evaporates. Then he either leaves NK defenseless for the West to clean up, or start the transition to unification/rebuilding himself.

At this point I'm pretty much convinced that the clowns below are pretty much holding him hostage as a puppet leader, since a descendant of the Kims is about the only one who has any ruling legitimacy in the eyes of the NK populace.

Wishful thinking.
