Artillery is becoming easier to counter.
Yes and no. The amount of CRAM you would need to shield SK from the massive amount of arty that NK can throw would border upon the impossible. Even when I was in Iraq, CRAM wasn't nearly 100% and rounds still would get through - and this was by lackluster strikes from insurgents who often would fire a few rounds then run, as opposed to NK relying on the sheer weight of numbers in order to make up for any technological disadvantage. And it's probably impossible to test on that scale until it happens anyways. Also their ammo capacity is somewhat limited, depending on how intense the engagement. If it's just a few rounds here and there with something like 100rd bursts, that's great. But if NK were to ever actually open up on SK, I'm not sure they'd make much of a dent to be honest.

Can you guys take half a minute to explain shit like this for those of us who were never in the military and don't have a hard on for military hardware but are still interested in the thread?
Phoenix posted an image of a Ticonderoga Cruiser. In the middle are two white dome things with guns underneath. They spit out a ton of bullets while tracking an incoming projectile to shoot it down or off course. It's basically a A-10 Warthog on a ship, firing super accurately. Of course, the same system can be used on land, as Israel has done with the Iron Dome. More realistically however there is good old counter-battery fire. We're talking World War 1 tactics here. When NK opens fire with what they have (and what they have cannot all reach Seoul from the DMZ) then sensors in SK track exactly where they are firing from. It takes several minutes to pack the artillery up and move back into a bunker, during which time they are vulnerable to artillery fire from SK.

The big thing is that we can predict fairly well from history how the fight would go. NK makes waves every few years by opening fire with artillery at some SK islands. When they attacked Yaepdong they had 25% of their shells fail as duds. This is horrendous for a modern military. 4 people were killed in that barrage as well, but when you look at the statistics, 13 people should have died on average. For some reason (better training, low NK accuracy, fewer firing pieces) NK did not perform well. Then look at the Gulf Wars. The US blew up 20% of Iraq's artillery, armor, and vehicles on the first day. Yes, we had a lot of preparation time there, but we've also had 50+ years getting ready in Korea. Then, like I said, since most of NK's mortars and artillery cannot hit Seoul they would have to leave their defensive positions and air cover. At this point it's open season for US cruise missiles and smart bombs. NK can get by with some minor shelling but a major attack escalates into regime change quickly.

So that kind of verifies what Phoenix was saying and I was wondering. That their shit is old and worn out. Add to that the stuff about supply lines and oil and they sound like basically an impoverished paper tiger.

I think I mentioned it in the other thread, but I read a bunch of stuff on this a bit back during one of their last bouts of sabre rattling and the big takeaway was that in the 1960s or so North Korea had a window open to attack South Korea and inflict severe casualties and massive damage and losses. They hit a peak point at some point in there though and the window has been sliding closed ever since. The technology "we" have (America and our cute slanty Japanese and South Korean allies) has been growing and outstripping the advances the North Koreans have by leaps and bounds.

Seoul is no longer just a sitting duck waiting to be mauled, it is filled with underground bunkers and shelters and modern buildings built to high levels of codes to minimize this attack they know is coming. The counter-artillery set ups are state of the art I imagine and can retaliate faster and with more precision than the North Koreans even imagine possible I bet. We have the gun systems on the Ticonderoga class (Phalanx? Is that what they're called?) on both air and sea to eliminate missiles, as well as other countermeasures. Meanwhile North Korea's stuff is all aging and ill kept, and even the newest stuff is of questionable accuracy and reliability.

Don't get me wrong here: If "Korean War II" starts, people will die, quite a few in South Korea and probably Japan and probably a bunch of Americans in the line of fire. I have no doubt there will be a week or two of fear and suck in that region and beyond. However, unless something weird happens (China sides with them, or they reveal their Unicorn Cavalry, both about equally likely) the war will be short and they will lose.

And the clean up will be horrible.

Did you know the fact that we are having this conversation over the internet in our homes is evidence that video is full of shit with its propaganda because not every American lives this way? Of course you do but I figured you liked the obvious being pointed out.

The funniest part was when they were obviously filming in Europe and they explained it away as "parts of America disguised as Europe".

WTF?

Well, something to think about. Most cultures on earth, no matter how loyal, indoctrinated or meek, have risen up and torn their leaders throats out when they don't have enough food to feed their children....People can generally endure being shit on in every other way, no home, no job, ect--but having to watch people starve? That's generally when the killing starts.

That being said, North Korea, from a total deaths point of view, has experienced the worst famine in history. More Koreans have starved to death than Somalians. The average height of a North Korean is something like 3 inches shorter than South Korea because malnourishment is so rampant--it's actually worse than Africa. And yet fatty fat still lives. So, yeah....they believe it.

The Party members tend to believe the propaganda until they hit their mid twenties then they start to see the lies but at that point, what can they do? They're party members, and therefore don't suffer as much as others, so they figure its as good as it can get.

The regular people in North Korea don't have any faith in their government any more, but if they try to do anything about it, like escape, or rebel, they and three generations of their family are imprisoned in the concentration camps, or executed outright. Its a very effective system (up to this point, it can't last forever) at keeping the people under control.

When things get real bad, the state just stops enforcing its laws on private marketplaces for awhile, so people can get high priced food from China, and that helps keep the pot from boiling over.

Just if you ever need to understand why North Korea stands today, just remember, if you fold a newspaper such that the crease falls on the face of Dear Leader or one of his Predecessors, you will go to a concentration camp. So will your mother and father, any brothers and sisters you have, any children you have, and any children any of the aforementioned have. For life.
