Movies have staggered releases all the time. Releasing it in small theaters, thereby shaming the larger chains when nothing happens, and then releasing it broadly would work perfectly fine and fit what has already been done before many times.

I didn't mean it as a comparison. I just find it funny how the fear mongering world we live in today tells us to narc on our neighbors, report everything, etc etc. And yet some country who we've already officially acknowledged won a cyber war against Sony next says they are going to target the White House and we're all still giggling about it.

So, if it wasn't North Korea, who was it then? At a minimum, the people who perpetrated it certainly went to great lengths to pin it on North Korea..

-- It obviously wasn't Anonymous or some other SJW style hacker group, because they always seem to claim responsibility.
-- It wasn't your typical Chinese/Russian cyberjacking cryptolocker styled extortion attack, since no money has been demanded.

So, if it isn't wasn't perpetrated by SJW's (e.g for a cause), or by criminals (for money), what's left except for state actors?

Well, if that's the case then the FBI and the White House are colluding with Sony to cover it up, because even if Sony lied to the FBI, by the time they were done combing over Sony's network they would know about it. Also, even if money was demanded, it sure must have been an astronomical amount, because I'm sure Sony would have happily paid anything semi-reasonable to avoid this disaster going public.

I'm not saying what you're stating is impossible, but it paints a conspiracy that involves the government that would make themselves look bad, which doesn't make much sense. From a governmental PR perspective, its a lot less damaging to make the claim that this was done by some hacker group than it does to lay the blame on North Korea.
