C'mon, now.

I can get on board with Tarantino being overrated, but I don't think any of his movies(I have not seen this one) are bad. They range from awesome to good. M. Knight has had some real bad ones.
Death Proof is just bad bad bad. yeah the stunts by that Zoe chick are off the hook, but that doesnt make the movie good.

So he made another lets kill hitler fantasy?
Wow.

People are really shitting on this.
Well he made another let's kill Hitler fantasy, and even panders to the hero worship of hollywood.

Critics will love it. I assume he gets awards.

He's a high budget Kevin smith. I like that both of these guys are able to make the movies they want to make but (with exceptions) I mostly don't like their movies.

And that's fine. I don't have to. They've both made a couple of great ones too.

Only good parts of Death Proof is the hood stunt chase followed by them chasing him down and beating him to death

The core problem I have with Death Proof is that we spend all this time in the first part getting to know the characters through dialogue that is written like how a group of friends talks. To an outsider it's semi-opaque. We don't fully grasp the little references, in jokes and the like. Just as we're getting a handle on who these people are we then have to stat over with a new group of friends that has their own backstory and cliquey dialogue. C'mon man, I put in my time once already this picture.

As time went on with long-running horror franchises, Friday the 13th especially, audiences became more and more interested in seeing the killer murder in gruesome fashion an ever more annoying gaggle of perky youths. Roger Ebert routinely shit on horror/thriller audiences for that behavior. I think Tarantino wanted to turn that on its ear a little bit by having his super coolguy villain become a pathetic crybaby thus punishing the assholes for picking his side but Kurt Russell was really the only interesting thing going on. I've watched it a few times over the years and it's growing on me but I still don't like it.

You're making a mistake if you watch a Tarantino flick thinking it's a movie. He doesn't make movies anymore, everything is homage now. He hasn't made a real movie since the 90s.

If you go into something like Death Proof with that in mind it's pretty good. If you go into thinking it's a modern take on 70s grindhouse style films you're gonna be disappointed. It's not a modern take, it's almost exactly like the old films. That's just what he seems to want to do these days.

I haven't liked a Tarantino movie since Kill Bill 2, so I'm going to just skip this one based on the feedback. I think he's easily the most overrated filmmaker in the business.

You didn't like Inglorious Basterds? That's my favorite Tarantino film. And I'm a Tarantino fanboi.

This movie was excellent. How you can say this is bad in the face of all the faggoty neverending superhero movies the American populace consumes?

This was stylish, fun, the cinematography was great, the mixture of fact and fiction were great, the ending was hilarious.

Sure a lot of it didn't have to do with much but it didn't subtract from the movie. It was an entertaining ride throughout and there was something to savor even in the "filler."

I think there's a good 30-40 minutes you could cut from this movie without changing the story at all and really make it tight and solid.

Not gonna argue that, but I found there was something enjoyable or funny even in those parts (i.e. scenes like him talking to the little girl.)

I was thinking what you said, about the superhero movie. You may be right there. Like we get used to just constant action. And this movie was indulgence, and definitely not like an amazing movie, but maybe we are being too hard on it for not just being full of action. I think I'll give it another try when it comes out for DL.

Yeah I can appreciate the movie a lot for doing what it sets out to do, even if maybe the stuff it wants to do - pay homage to second tier Hollywood of 60s and just soak in that time period - isn't stuff I care all that much about. I can appreciate it for doing exactly what it wants to do, foot fetish and all.

some real heavy behind the scenes stuff for this movie going into excruciating detail on cinematography, lighting, etc

Also this is a clip from the actual FBI (show) scene thats in the movie, and Burt fucking Reynolds plays the Rick Dalton character lol

Not really.

I did think it was masterfully crafted. It started SO serious and by the end of it it was such a farce, and the way he moved through that transition throughout the entire piece was impressive. Not many people try and fewer succeed. It was incredibly well done. I liked all of the characters, the Happy Nazi being my favorite obviously. I liked most of the scenes. And of course it looked nice without having a zillion CGI effects.

I get why people think it's so great. From a certain vantage point it is pretty great. I just wanted to see either the movie it started as or the movie it became. Mushing them both together, as masterfully done as it was, isn't something that resonated.

He makes great movies. It's just most of his scripts are a "meh?" for me. Not all of them though, some of them I do like quite a bit.

I would class him with Kubrick or Speilberg for ability. But for personal consistency in the stories he picks... that part is usually a miss for me.

Who cares. That dude's rich as hell and sucking on all the feet he can fit in his mouth.

Do you include his dialogue when you say "scripts"? Because that's the best part about Tarantino. The diner scene in Reservoir Dogs is one of my favorite scenes of all time.

No, I tend to like the dialogue too. It's the meta stories that just don't click with me usually.

Dogs, Natural Born Killers, Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight, I liked those a lot. I like it when he starts crazy and stays crazy I guess.

The only one I've really disliked was Django. Well, and four rooms was a turd. But everyone gets a four rooms for free. I guess I really do like a good half of his filmography. Pretty good ratio. I thought he'd done more movies.

I like Django a lot. It's weird that he wanted Smith for that, movie would have been super shitty with Smith mugging for the camera every 5 minutes. Death Proof is the one I like the least, I get what it's supposed to be and it's not terrible, but I'm just not super into those type of movies. My favorite is the Kill Bill movies, I feel like those are kind of the pinnacle of his style. It's got the over the top violence, it's got the killer dialogue and music, it's got some of the most classic scenes and setpieces, and it really delves deep into the characters because it has that time. I was hoping that he'd actually get to do his Kill Bill 3, but instead I guess he's married to this terrible Star Trek idea.

Agreed on Kill Bill. They aren't my favorite (Inglorious Basterds is that) but IB, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, and Reservoir Dogs are practically perfect films to me. They never get old and I've seen them all a bunch.

I was kinda dubious on this one but we were bored and we went to see it. I have to say I enjoyed it a ton more than I expected to. It is basically a love letter to late 60s movies and it was way funnier than I expected it to be.

Agreed on the humor. The audience in my theater laughed at a number of scenes throughout the film.

I love Reservoir Dogs but it was almost ruined by Tim Roth for me - I hate that whiny little shit. I know it's all personal perspective but Roth kills movies for me. On the other hand, I have a special place in my heart for Michael Madsen who is a B- to C actor at best but is always great in a Tarantino movie.

I thought Kill Bill 2 was the better movie because there was more banter and less arterial spurting. Darryl Hannah was a treat to watch in that movie. Pulp Fiction is, without question, the hallmark movie - every Tarantino movie has great bits in it that you can see established in PF, but it was PF that included it from start to finish. Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead.

Anyway after watching RLM gush over this movie I look forward to seeing it. I enjoy the long, lingering scenes so I believe I will enjoy this immensely.

Edit - I thought Basterds was a great movie as well, but the whole storyline with the theater lady and her boyfriend annoyed me - crucial to the whole movie, clearly, but when I think about this movie, I go to those two first, then to Waltz and the forehead carving and then finally to the AMAZING pub scene with Fassbender.

If I had to criticize Pulp Fiction, it would be that the characters aren't fully developed. Which is fine for what it is, it's a masterpiece movie. But I don't feel like you leave that movie with a good picture of who Vince or Jules really are, and I don't think you were meant to. These are vignettes that are strung together, but they aren't meant to build a world. By comparison, I felt like Kill Bill built a world and fleshed the characters out much more. But again, it was intended to do that.
