I don't think it counts as help because it's too late to implement it now without doing an incredibly tedious remodel but I'll put it in spoilers to respect your stubbornness
I did this first base because Terraria!

Done 3 short lived bases but getting better each time, restarting once I learn a major lesson.

This time I learned about floors that gas can pass through and how pumps/pipes work.

Something I'm curious about, is there something analogous to the repeatable research that's in Factorio or Dyson Sphere Program? Maxing out my science per minute and then making it highly reliable was a fun endgame goal.
Not really, and once you've researched everything you can deconstruct all of your research buildings.

Endgame isn't a repeatable task like that, to me it's more about automating everything to the point that you can run your base forever and everything is fully renewable. There are also more and more complicated resource sources, especially if you have the spaced out DLC which I highly recommend.

Im a bit surprised he hasn't had a cascading failure already. there's a few things I would have expected to have been causing stress, or sickness, or outright death already.

but, he's a factorio vet. let him find out the hard way, and need to restart.

Yeah I can see the first thing I put in spoilers coming down the tracks like a fully loaded freight train. I'll grant that he's lasted quite a bit longer than my first couple colonies did but ONI was my first colony sim type game.

Six wheezeworts are not gonna keep his base from getting too hot for farming. That iron volcano on the middle left isn't insulated all the way around, the water on the bottom right is all probably ~90c, nothing to insulate him from the higher starting heat of the caustic biomes he's dug into, and that polymer press is way too close to his core.

Same, I've been keeping that volcano in his screenshots. I'd love to see the thermal overlay. It's probably good luck (or maybe conscious choice) that he went from mush bars to grubfruit for his food. If he was on mealwood my guess is his dupes would be starving already.

it seems like with the new cyborg DLC there's more usages for data discs. so that aspect of research perpetuates.

Not for research though, the new uses for data banks are as a consumable/power for remote workers and pilots.
There's also a new source of them so you don't need to go so space for them if you have a lot of spare power.

My first game lasted about an hour before everyone died of oxygen or some bullshit. I'm on my second one now. I don't see how a cascading failure is possible at this point but. With two natural gas geysers, a water geyser, an oil well, etc, there are just too many options for food, energy, oxygen and resources. I only have 9 dupes though, which is pretty comfy but feels a bit slow.

I think I'd enjoy this game more if my base failed in the midgame and I restarted on whatever difficulty is harder than the standard one.

Had my first death this morning. RIP my first cyborg. I didn't really look at what they needed and he ran out of energy and fell into a carbon dioxide pit.

My heat was increasing so I checked out the aquatuner. Behold my first shitty cooling circuit. I know it sucks don't tell me how to improve it. It hasn't kicked into steam yet tho. After I get this sorted I'm either going to try to figure out the steam engine on my nearby iron volcano or start building my great tubular empire.

Oh and my first attempt to cool by base, which was fucking useless.

I tried just piping cold air into it. Ended up with basically no cooling and a bunch of pollution XD

Lost for the first time.

Watched a few videos and got oxygen/power mostly sorted out.

Learned a lot making "The Rodriguez" power plant, so figured out sanitation/water recycling on my own decently well afterwards.

Not figured out food, got to 20 guys then had a starvation spiral, made an airlock to space and never got to try it out :(

Never had enough industry to overheat.

Can cyborgs use wall toilets? i sent mine to space just presuming he'd shit everywhere because it's a one way trip for him...but i peeked in and i saw this:

1739056703572.png

it appears to be gunked up. but i see no option to plunge it. so is it gunked forever till re-built? can he just shit into space and it doesn't matter?

I've decided to swap my space men to cyborgs because micromanaging food in rockets is absurd.

also, this motherfucker couldn't be bothered to lube up before launch:

at least some of his cargo cans have some cans of lube.

You could try deconstructing it and rebuild it. I have been having problems with wall toilets in my current game and couldn't get normal dupes to use them to the point that I'm using normal toilets in my rockets now.
Not sure if it's a new bug or maybe one of my mods broke them, never had this issue with them before.

I think the most dupes I've ever had was 16 and that base was like 400+ cycles. I've gone almost all the way through the midgame before with no more than 8 dupes. If you want to ramp up your numbers you need to do it slowly, being very picky about the dupes you choose and keeping a close eye on your kcal count.
I know it sucks don't tell me how to improve it.
The one (massive) error I see you will probably have noticed and addressed well before I made this post. Otherwise looks like pretty standard heat deletion.

Someone remind me to take Gavin off ignore when I beat this game so I don't accidentally see his spoilers trying to trivialize the game for me.

update on the spaceman shitting. he never shit on the floor the whole 10 space flight. but he may have just been shitting in the suit.

i made a huge mistake though and he's dead now, but he did establish the foothold before my oversight got him killed

RIP my two favorite farms and all the sweedles. I was so focused on heat, plastic, steel that I neglected my sulfur levels and they all died.

It's been a very long time since I played ONI but I remember the thing I liked most about it was how all the systems interact from the very start and make the whole process interconnected. Sure other games bring everything together for end production with a sprinkling of power or pollution or whatnot spanning all production but ONI seemed to, very logically, bring 2nd and 3rd order effects to the systems from the get go. I'm sure there's other factory sims I haven't played that do this as well.

I guess if you had to bucket economy/factory sims that's probably the key feature of ONI, the hugely interconnected byproducts. Satisfactory has 3d verticality, Factorio has logistics, Dyson Sphere has unique perspective and megaprojects, Rimworld has survival focus, but ONI has the complex system interactions.
