Almost every single person I knew didn't use maps. It is a fairly good sign we have good memories, good bearings and sense of direction. I know every old world zone as well as I know my own house. Kunark and Velious too more or less. The only time I ever saw someone using a map in my guild, was when Kunark first game out. We went to CoM when Kunark was still new, and the warrior in my guild group had a map on a laptop and was following it. It pretty much ruined the experience and none of us had ever done it before because we didn't need to. And now I know that zone inside out, because I learned it while doing 3 epics in there and plenty of levelling, and never even looked at a map of it.
I might feel differently in a huge world like TESO or something. But in EQ and especially with zones, maps were for retards. And I bet everyone who uses a map, will also look up walkthroughs of quests and google, "wot is teh best build for a mage!" in every fucking game. And spams chat in every MMO with dumb questions. I pity the fool who can't think for himself.

Most old RPG's were the same. You either made your own maps or you went without. No in game maps is fun.
DayZ 3 years ago being my favorite no map game.
Note you could get pieces of a map if you lived long enough. Living for long periods of time = leveling in DayZ
