Sitting in front of a PoP box. A bold strategy. I know most of us here are fairly hardcore (or at least were back in '01-'02) but for the majority of players, PoP was getting raped on the valor trials for 6 months until they gave them the pity flags.

When I play Skyrim, for example, I don't care what level I am, I don't care about leaving on the ground a lot of crappy items, I don't care about finding a customer for my wares, not even a merchant to earn a few more gold coins. I play the game at my pace and the game lets me play at the pace I want right away and through the whole duration.
There is no crap like "the game starts at level cap" or similar things, yet there is a clear sense of character progression, both levelling and crafting are satisfying from the first moment I put into the game onwards to the moment I finally decide to take a break (you can't "quit" until a new chapter is out, can you?).

While there is instant travel, which I learned to cope with since the days I played a wizard in my late EQ years (2003-2004), the world feels massive enough to mantain a sense of wonder and I can choose to travel by feet/horse and find hidden locations and treasures.

In MMOs this magic is long gone: there is some exploration left to do, a bit of experimenting on how to build a character, sometimes quest lines can be interesting for a while, but there are way too many conveniences and everything seems so artificial.
I play MMOs still, but when I want a good adventure I load up a TES game (not TESO!!!) with a gazillion mods to change it all over.

Maybe Brad will try to get back some old school gaming style, maybe not. Maybe it'll be WoW-clone 27.0, maybe not. I don't care anymore to be honest, of one thing I'm 100% sure: read Rerolled before buying to check if it's worth a look, quit+uninstall if it sucks and don't pay for anything until deemed worth of my time.

These games taught us to grind and now we cant unlearn that habit.

It is what killed MMORPGs for me. No matter how aware I am of the condition, and how hard I try, I can't seem concentrate on the "journey" at all anymore. It has nothing to do with the state of the genre, and everything to do with who I am, and in my opinion who we are. My unconscious solution was to kind of just stop playing MMORPGs and now I play single player or non-RPG multiplayer games at my own pace.

I feel like many people here are trying to recapture something that they can't, like only dating young girls to try and reproduce that feeling they had towards their first love. You can't move backwards in time, you can't feel the same way about a new MMORPG as you did about EQ becauseyouare a different person now than you were 14 years ago.

Modern MMO games facilitate and encourage that conditioning. That's the issue. WoW wasn't constructed to be a world to explore. It was constructed to number crunch and min-max. That is to say, the gameplay mechanics didn't just encourage, but expected that behavior from its players. That's fine if that's your intention, but what isn't fine is that these types of mechanics do not exploit the benefits of making a game an MMO - that is, it doesn't exploit the capability of delivering a world and massive interactions among players in that world to its players.

That's ultimately why WoW is an MMO failure and Tigole/Furor/Pardo couldn't design themselves an MMO if both McQuaid & Garriott sat on their shoulders the entire time. They made a great game, but a lousy as fuck MMO.

Grinding for hours is not what I miss... It was an early mechanic that could/should be improved upon... what bugs me about new titles is they are more and more solo centric and fracture my original reason for playing MMOs.

This reasoning always feels like a justification for developers when they're creating a product they know won't meet expectations. The first time I played Metroid was a pretty big eye opener for me. It wasn't a standard NES platformer, it was a creepy ass maze of an alien world. Years later Super Metroid came around and TKO'd that fucker without having to be the first of its kind.

Bringing it to MMOs, maybe people on this board didn't feel this way, but there were a lot of EQ vets that got completely absorbed in WoW. I doubt Blizzard prefaced their launch with "look dudes, you're not going to love this game but maybe you'll like-like it?"

At face value I get the logic, but hopefully there's an MMO developer out there that spits in its face and actually tries to create something worthwhile.

What bothers me about newer games isn't that I can't grind, because end game faction dailies are just that, grinds. What bugs me is that every single step in their game is scripted. Developers stick a finger in each of my nostrils and drag me around the world in predefined steps. Every step.

Add to that the tired old task but called quest format and bleh.

GW2 had a decent idea with their events. If 80% of their world / zoneswere not lifeless it might of been even better. I'd like to see that expanded on with a much better main "epic" quest. I would also change a lot of other things about that game: Mob xp, make defined roles, add decent raiding and add a few class abilities.

I much preferred the open ended grinding where there was no clear beginning and end to what you were doing. I hate quests and instanced dungeons after the first run, because it feels like you're just playing the same scene over and over and over and over again. I never got that feeling camping things in EverQuest.

I don't know how you can say this. Killing the same guy over and over to grind for that one drop you were wanting doesn't seem like the same scene played over and over and over? I mean, when I ground the same 5-8 mobs over and over while sitting in basically the same areas, it never quite felt like "wow, this is some new shit right here!" Especially since these guys repoped at a given timeframe outside of placeholders. Hell, I killed the same orcs for belts over and over for the exact same rewards with almost all of my alts. Felt no different.
