As usual, Brad isn't running things right:
He could have sold the forum if he did it properly - something like the following:
1. State what he's doing: "Hi guys, we're opening a pay-to-play forum."
2. State why he's doing it: "Because we didn't make/aren't gonna make our kickstarter goals."
3. State why he's doing it - really: "Because frankly we realize now we were not prepared for kickstarter."
4. State the Long Term Goal of the PtP Forum: "We're going to use the money from the PtP Forum to fund 3 or 4 of us who still don't have jobs to continue working on Pantheon to develop an Alpha build. Once we have an Alpha build we're gong to go back to kickstarter and this time do it right."
5. Explain why the LTG is realistic: "We had 3,000 backers. If we generate $10,000 a month in fees - that's an average of $3.33 per person per month - we can pay for 3 to 4 cheapass, out of work and near broke developers to keep developing. 2,000-3,000 a month per person isn't much but it beats unemployment."
6. Do the Math Tier thing properly: "We know we can't get 3.33 a month from all 3,000 or even 1,000 so we're going to offer three tiers: $1 a month for access to read/post and Hero title, $5.00 a month for Read/Post and Champion title and $15.00 a month for Read/Post and Grim Champion title. Grim Champions will have earliest access to our proto-alpha when available and access to a a Unique Class/Race combo the Elf Dark Knight or the Ogre Wizard (or whatever) in Live that will not be made accessible any other way."
7. Explain what happens if they don't get 10,000 a month: "If we only get $2,000-$3,000 a month we'll go down to just two full time developers, not including myself, and the other chaps will help out on weekends when they can. We still think we'll get it done and additionally we'll sell T-shirts, coffee cups, mouse pads of our cooler art. We figure that we can get to an alpha state worthy of kickstarter in two years."
If I had seen something like that, I would have tossed in $1.00 or maybe even $5.00 a month - that's less than I spend on coffee in any given day.
