While our kid hasn't had problems pooping yet, we've had multiple doctors tell us that there is absolutely nothing wrong if they go as little as only once or twice a week. As long as fluids are passing through them and they are urinating plenty, then they can go several days without a bowel movement and be fine. If you think about it, it kind of makes sense, babies are doing nothing but ingesting fluids.
pretty much this - breastmilk has natural laxative properties so formula fed babies tend to have more issues with constipation - so no direct experience here.
of the folks I know who are formula feeding they sometimes have tried switching formulas if it gets to be an issue but I agree with Joeboo - its nerve wracking but I think you're ok/withing normal range.

Side note - we are reading happiest baby on the block and its doing a decent job helping. Author is egotistical but eh.

Baby gets real painful gas. If it does smell I don't notice -im so happy for him when he gets a good fart or explosive poop. Gripe water doesn't work, gas drops are hit or miss.....we are trying probiotic drops which are newer.....will report back. actually eya...maybe that will help you too?

This part is the part I'm most worried about. That's what I want him to have is a healthy love for the game. My biggest problem is the fact that youth sports is ruined by the adults who just take it way way too seriously. I Know I'm overreacting a bit, but in the end making kids play in the rain, or until they puke, and running them ragged just seems so wrong at that age. I want to see that kid bust a 80 yard run... in the wrong direction. I want to see that right guard tackle his own running back. Sure they need to learn from those mistakes but at the same time, it's not a tragedy that just happened. It's actually part of the fun, yet I think some of these chowder heads would literally fall to the ground in tears of rage.
my neighbors 13 year old is in football and basketball. They do make the kids run til most puke. He's had 1 concussion already and two weeks after the event they let him play (I also fault my neighbors for this).

no way man. No effing way. My son can do basketball or swim team or cheerleading or track. Football lacrosse and soccer are out. I'd even let him do hockey before any of those.

What have you guys done in the past if you've had a constipated baby? Ours pees non-stop but only has one massive poop every 36 hours or so. Sometimes its goes to 48+, at which point our doctor said it's fine to use half of a glycerine suppository. We've only had to do that twice so far. Our doctor said this isn't a problem as long as she is generally a happy baby, which seems to be the go to reasoning for anything we suspect might be wrong but she's otherwise acting fine.

He said yesterday at our 1 month appointment that the bowel movements should start getting more regular around 2 months but in the meantime, anyone have any suggestions? Gas is not so much a problem except for the smell... she is farting all the time and it's like a pig farm.
When they're that young, don't do anything unless your doctor thinks it is a problem. Newborns/young infants can go like a week without pooping sometimes. The only real reason to panic is if you notice a drastic change in the color if it is white, white = immediate dr visit or er time. If there is no blood and the doctor isn't concerned, I would let it pass. The cause really depends on what they are eating. You typically don't see any form of constipation in breastfed babies. I would say you could try a different formula, but again I wouldn't do anything without the doctor.

When My oldest girl was about 2 we had issue with constipation, with kids that old it becomes a vicious cycle of them holding it in and the constipation gets worse and hurts more s they hold it in more etc.

Yeah the doctor says no big deal as long as there isn't and blood in it. We asked about switching formula and he said that shouldn't be necessary either at this point but we are welcome to try it if we want. He said he doesn't want us to use stuff like gas drops unless absolutely necessary like the glycerin suppository but again I don't think it's a gas issue since she farts like crazy but I'll be waiting to here from you Etoille on how the probiotic drops work.

Right now our daughter is about 70%/30% formula to breastmilk. My wife's milk just did not come in and our daughter will be six weeks old tomorrow so as upsetting as it is we've pretty much just accepted that she'll be a formula kid. We even had a lactation consultant from the hospital come to our house... She is getting about 12-15 ounces of formula a day and 4-6 ounces of breastmilk based on numbers that come from my wife pumping.

With those gas drops, our pediatrician told us they don't work. We said sure, use them if they make you feel better, it is totally harmless, but he's actually done studies at his practice and he thinks it's bogus. This guy has been a pediatrician since my dad was in high school so I trust him and generally he has been correct. Probiotics though he did recommend.

My boy is 10 and I'm generally of the opinion that if he has interest in something and wants to try it out, then go ahead. But I've also fully explained what could happen if he gets hurt. He was hardcore into wrestling for about 2 years and I had my doubts about it because he's not the biggest kid in the world and he did just fine, won a couple of meets, etc. He eventually got bored with it and now wants to play football. I'm fine with it but I did have a long conversation with him about it. He likes to try all sports and I'd rather encourage that than him sitting in the house playing games all day long.

Gas drops don't work. At least none that we ever bought. Thankfully the period of time that went on didn't last long.

Whoa, whoa, WHOA. NO.
um.....not only do male cheerleaders get mad pussy but scholarships without any of the serious injury potential that girl cheerleaders face and if he went to a school with a kick ass sports program like say I dunno Michigan state he gets to go all over the fucking place to say bball games in aircraft hangers in Germany for the troops. Or bowl games. For fucking free.

Seriously I hope like hell my son wants to do that.

yeah they are statistically as effective as water. the reason I said sometimes is that I think when he's worked up it makes it harder for him to pass the gas and he likes the flavor of the gas drops so that tase will kind of slow the fit down and then things get better.

The book I mentioned above also says the same.

probiotics actually help a lot with regulating the system and constipation (think activia commercials) in adults - which was why I was thinking it would help - not the gas but the actual constipation. They take about 4-5 days ive heard to build up in the system to be effective and we are on day 3. I'll let you know!!

If you do get them go to Walgreens - the only ppl selling them on amazon are charging a 100% markup plus shipping

My son is 8.5 months old and he only poops every 3-4 days unless we feed him prune baby food. He's breastfed 5-6x a day, but we give him fruit/veggie baby food either from the store or what we make ourselves, for dinner every night. If prunes are good enough for grandma, then little dude can use 'em too.
