I wasn't in the room. I was outside flirting with the nurses...

just kidding I was stuck in traffic and missed the appointment.

I'll try to get a more accurate answer tonight.

More speech therapy for my three year old. They want us to take her to this ChildFind program through the public schools, but the last time we took her there the woman sat us down and said "Look, we deal with kids here with serious handicaps. Your daughter is not right for this program..." and now they want us to go back. My wife went to the appointment by herself when the pediatrician said this and now I can't have a conversation with her about what was said because she thinks I am trying to say our daughter doesn't need the therapy, so now we're arguing over a miscommunication over a kid that needs speech therapy. Dumb shit.

But yeah, disappointing that she needs more therapy, I was hoping she was done with that.

Ugh. Sorry, Chaos. I surely hope you get consistent reports henceforth on your child's progress. My five year old starts kindergarten in two days, and I'm hoping the in-house therapists helps him with his "r" pronunciation. I know there's plenty of time for that to correct, but I'd love for it to happen sooner, rather than later.

That said, I took him to a scrap metal yard today (I had things to get rid of). We sat and watched the electro-magnent on the big crane for more than half an hour. I can't decide if that makes me a bad parent, or a mediocre parent. It was fascinating, though.

We are in the same type program with our daughter Chaos, here it is the Ready Start program or something. We started mid way through last year and have loved it. She is in a half day class, 4 day a week with 5 other kids and 3 teachers. The specialists come in 1-2 times a week to work both individually with the children and in groups. She absolutely loves it and is really looking forward to starting again in a couple weeks. It has been really great for her. Her speech has improved a ton and she is making progress in all other areas really well too. She is actually moving up to the next level of the program in the fall, a mixed class that will be half kids with special needs and half without. It will be the same thing with the therapists but also allow her more interaction with kids that do not have special needs which will be really good for her. Her social/emotional development was slow last year because the class she was in was not able to challenge her there.

But yeah, it is scary and frustrating to go through the special needs stuff but if you find a good program it will really help and you're daughter will be really happy for it.

For those with pooping issues, we have just discovered that in addition to plums, avacados work even better (for us at least). Plus it's a nice ready-made welcome-to-real-food food.

All my kids start school tomorrow. Am I a bad person for looking forward to that?

I hear ya. I'm at home with mine each day and things are getting a bit tense. I definitely need some kid free time and they need the stimulation of school. I can't wait to be able to go grocery shopping without kids in tow and clean the house without being whined at because someone is bored or hungry.

Speaking of school, when do you normally get class assignments? We're at a new school this year for our oldest and the last school sent out an info packet at the beginning of August so starting to wonder when we are going to hear something.

On another note... WEANING IS FUN. My second weaned so easily. The day she turned one we stopped nursing totally and there was never a single problem or complaint. I have been trying to phase it out with my third (16 months now) but she is a comfort nurser and it is hell. Finally decided we just need to get it done so we're down to twice a day and it is absolutely miserable. Life kind of sucks right now.

New thing this year - my kids' buses have GPS locators, and you can track them live time. No more waiting for the bus outside in the cold. My phone gets pinged when the bus is three minutes away. Pretty sweet.

For those of you that did baby sign-language, how old was your kid before you started them on watching the videos? Our kid is 3 months old, and has yet to show any interest in watching anything on TV, or videos of any kind. He likes the sound/music of some kids shows sometimes, but visually they do nothing for him yet(that I can tell).

We never did the videos, we just did the signs with our kids along with the words and they picked it up.

On a strange topic, my 4 year old has started masturbating... She calls it "squishing". She "squishes" her stuffed animals, her hands, anything she can fit in between her legs. It is hilarious but kind of uncomfortable at the same time. The books say it is normal (of course) and to just encourage her to do it in private rather than on the couch or at the dinner table or whatever.

You sure it's masturbating? As in, for pleasurable effect. Or just playing with something. Because I'll still play with my balls just because. And I'm an adult, or people say I should act like one in public.

That's...something. My five year old toys with his junk sometimes, but it's certainly not masturbating. Is it really common for kids so young to start that?

I'm not trying to be a dick, or call anything you're doing as a parent into question. I've just really never heard of this.

My kids went back to their mothers today. a few hours later I get a phone call with her yelling at me that I let the kids stay up until 10:30 when at her house they have a strict 8:00pm bedtime. (my son is 10, daughter is 7)

I told her I refuse to put my kids to bed when the sun is still up. She then told that that's the rule with them at her house and they are strictly to follow it.

I then told her bluntly that my place isn't her house and I will do as I see fit while they are here.

8pm bedtime? the hell is that crap? During school I can see the reasoning behind early bedtimes but when it's summer or a weekend that's a load. She's also a very lazy parent and getting them to bed that early gets them out of her hair I guess.

She told me I need to buy some of their school supplies this year because I never buy them. I told her I buy them every year and she told me she's never seen me buy a thing for them. I told her I give her nearly a grand a month in child support and that's what that money is to be used for. She responds with "You don't have any idea how hard it is to raise a family of 5 on that much!" (she had twins with the guy she had her affair with, she works full time but her b/f does not. He works part time as a pizza delivery guy)

Bluntly again I told her I don't pay her to raise a family of 5, I pay her child support to raise my two children and if she's unable to do that then to let me know and I'd be happy to have them come live with me. (mind you she lives in an area where the prce of living is dirt cheap, she rents nice a 3 story house for $650 a month)

It's a wonder my kids have turned out as normal and grounded as they have, hopefully that trend contines and hopefully once my son is 13 he can come live with me.

But anyways, am I alone in thinking an 8pm bedtime during non school times is silly for a 10 year old?

Well it's not actual masturbating. But yeah, she is definitely pressing things against her vagina for a pleasurable effect. We asked her what she was doing when it first started and she said "squishing my bunny." We asked her why and she said "because I like it." And yeah, we read up on it and apparently it is beyond common, basically every kid plays with their junk in some range.

I exaggerated how much she does it, I probably see her doing it once or twice per week. Just enough to make it weird.

I think really strict bedtimes during summer months are silly. Some people need routine to function well, though. And my son didn't get off the get up at 6:30 AM routine all summer long. So, we didn't let him stay up very late all summer, simply because we knew he'd be up early. However, up late at night, and up early in the morning meant a good afternoon nap.

School has started here again, and bedtimes just got real again.

Bro, my 3 and 4 year old have an 8 pm bedtime, that shit is retarded for an older kid.

Man, I really hope I never get divorced. I read some of the shit you post and it depresses the hell out of me, not to mention how awful it must be to be separated from your kids.

Words can't express how hard it is to drop my kids off, it's been 5 years now and it never gets easier. It's one of the couple major reasons I'm fighting depression at the moment.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that bedtime is beyond stupid.

I should also note she took my son to the Ren Fest a week ago and spent over $300 on a costume for him, shes takingm my daughter next week and doing the same for her.

But she can hardly support her family of 5. I brought that up to her, she hung up on me.

It's sad because she's become a product of the area she lives in. An area that is secluded from the rest of the world, a $10 an hour job is considered living large. Rednecks aren't exclusive to the south, northern MN is full of them and that's the area she lives in.

Not a day goes by where I don't hope my kids choose to get away from it once they are old enough for a judge to listen to.
