Way to go, sir! Prepare yourself to have an unpredictable, irascible, complex person added to your life. (s)he will make things difficult.

It's just awesome. You're going to do great.

So our video baby monitor is busted. The screen will no longer turn on, and I think it was crushed under the recliner, or maybe chewed on by our 10 month old a little too much. Did some searching online, and it doesn't look like I can order just another screen?

Cameras of course all over the place, but not screens. Should I just go buy a new one?

Get a dropcam

It's 720p HD, also has night vision, just sits and streams via your wifi. Can view the stream via any PC, tablet, or phone. We love ours. If I want to leave it going on my phone at my bedside that's easy enough, or if I want to check in on how he's sleeping if the babysitter is there and we're out to dinner, I can easily do it from my phone.

Basically my wife can monitor on her phone/tablet while she's upstairs, and I can bring up the feed on my PC when I'm downstairs doing my thing. So much better than being confined to just 1 or 2 receivers. What are you more likely to have near you at any given time while in your home, a baby monitor receiver, or a phone/tablet/laptop/pc?

99 bucks for the basic one that I got. Well worth it.Dropcam - Wi-Fi Video Monitoring with Cloud Recording. Setup in Minutes.. And I figure once we no longer need a baby monitor, I can always set it up elsewhere in the house to keep tabs on the kid while he's playing or whatever, or even use it as a security cam overlooking my backyard or something.

And if you get one, you too can view your SatanBaby at night:

Probably a good way to go. I've heard those eat a ton of your bandwith though to stream it to other devices, because it's not just over your network, but over the internet? Like 50 gigs a week or something?

Or am I completely off?

Yeah, the feed basically uploads to the dropcam site constantly, that's why you can view it from anywhere, you don't have to just be on your home network.

I honestly don't know what kind of monthly bandwith it uses, I've never really tracked it too closely since I'm always torrenting movies and stuff that chew up WAY more traffic than the Dropcam does. They do say that it uses anywhere from .2 to .5 mbps upload, so you want to make sure you have a connection that is probably at least 1mbps upload, so the dropcam doesn't chew up all your bandwith(my connection is 5mbps up, and I don't see any difference in my online performance compared to before I got the dropcam)

But yeah, if you just do the math .2mbps streaming 24/7 is going to end up being like 2 gigs a day. Definitely not something you want to use(or at least not leave on 24/7 like we do) if you have bandwidth caps

I've got plenty of speed and upload, just was curious regarding the bandwith usage. I've got plenty of cap on that as well, so I should be good.

dropcam is awesome. we love ours.

that being said, I think video baby monitors are overrated unless you have a 10,000 square foot house and can't hear your kid crying. Sure it gives you peace of mind and convenience when they all of the sudden are asleep for 45 minutes instead of the normal 30 they usually nap for, but yeah...

Not to forget the baby that's going to pop out.

Sorry couldn't resist. My wife is the sweetest person, couldn't harm a thing, but during pregnancy she had epic mood swings. From really sky-high happy to crying her eyes out for no reason in 0.2 seconds.

Anyway, congratulations. It gets better with time ;-)

Kid started standing up in bed a few weeks ago. Last week she started sleeping on her side/stomach/whatever position she wants. Now our night time ritual is so much better. We can just put her into her crib after bath/books/etc. and if she cries we let her and she actually puts herself to sleep. Her crying pre-sleep is growing shorter and shorter.

It's like a whole new life.

Haha, awesome. Doesn't it make such a huge difference?

As for a quick update on our video monitor. Went to the local thrift shop and they had an audio only one for $4. Perfect.

The video is super nice when they are younger I think, and you want to see what position they are in, and a little more detail, but son is 10 months old now, and so it's all good. Just need to know when he's letting us know that he's awake and ready for some food! haha

Well it makes a huge difference for me. I'm the baby whisperer apparently. I can get her to sleep faster than her mother. So now if she wakes up in the middle of the night 8/10 times she can put herself back to sleep. Also, I don't have to spend an hour or two trying to get her to fall asleep in my arms anymore.

Congrats! Don't count your chickens before they are hatched though. Lots of stuff could go wrong.
