I used 1 exalt per gear slot and got something like 3.5k Energy Sheild for T1 maps after putting some points into it. I had about 300 in the campaign.
I think it's fine but gear progression needs a look and I'd rather have a smaller pool with more ways to regen it.
With the travel node increase they could probably just put some more life nodes near melee in a corner somewhere.

So apparently I rushed through Cruel difficulty and completely missed 6 weapon skill passives along with the +10 chaos res. Guess I didn't really need it, but more points can't hurt. Am halfway through the grueling atlas.....currently grinding T9s. Loot still sucks but every once in a while I walk out with 3+ exalts and a few T3 rares even though they still end up being garbage.

Did you check out the Infernalist version? Demon Form is a ridiculous amount of extra damage, cast speed, and +level to all spells, so much so that it seems hard for anything else to compete. That was my plan for a second character but I just don't have it in me to do everything again.
