I'd say the slow vs fast debate is mostly about the one skill one button clear full screen play style that currently dominates PoE. "Slowing" things down from that doesn't have to mean slower or more tedious. Imagine you change it so white mobs take more than one hit to kill, but you increase their exp/loot proportionately, then you invite multi skill synergy play style over/with the one skill/button play style. Or in other words, you replace white mobs with blue mobs, blues with rares, rares with uniques, and then make a new legendary mob to replace uniques. I don't think anyone would complain about that.
I have imagined it, and I've played through it (its called early game) and everyone wants to move past that as quickly as possible. It's tedious.
I think people just have trouble conveying what they actually want. What POE did was remove upper limiters. Your character never really feels "done" ever. And the limits you can push a character to are far beyond what most people want, except there is that nagging feeling that most people get in video games where even if they aren't a completionist they want to feel like they've achieved a goal.
Diablo 2 had very clear cut frame limitations. "I get to these cast frames and I legitimately cannot go higher, I'm done" and people like that. D2 wasn't really a slow game, it just has clear, definable upper limits. And that is what I think people actually want. They don't want to really, actually go slow. Fuck it taking more than 1 hit to kill a goddamn white monster at high gear levels, that's atrocious.
