The idol thing is.......weird. And clearly a pilot for PoE2, I am not sure how much more transparent it can be.
The RNG on the rolls, and the overlap of the mechanics on each rare idol is........disconcerting.
On the one hand, you can get more mechanics per map, on the other hand, you can't effectively focus high rewards in a single mechanic as elegantly as you can with the Atlas tree. The tree is unquestionably better.
I will say that with my somewhat random-ish set-up, I get an expedition, a legion, and a blight in every map, and sometimes an abyss. And Einhar or Alva every map as well. Can't really speed run effectively lol.

Ya maps are slow and not that rewarding it feels like having to focus on multiple mechanics to get any returns on investment. Zizaran made a video on the topic, how it caters to the .1% essentially, and how he as someone that plays like 14 hours a day is pooling resources together with other streamers just to put decent sets together and share them.
I wish I could play my current character but with the atlas tree, I'd be having so much more fun and be a lot further ahead.

Sir, at ExileCon 2023 they stated their plans to continue a new league for both PoE1 and PoE2 every three or four months.

I think Jonathan can't differentiate between what he wants to do and what they can do in any given time frame > 6 months

I wanted to like this event and actually had a decent time taking a few characters through the campaign but the desire to experiment keeps getting smacked in the nose with the rolled up newspaper that is the idol system. I can't take a semi-safe path through atlas progression because there's no atlas progression. Mapping with some half-baked experiment with whatever idols the gods have seen fit to bestow is a mess. That means the proper course of action is to pilot something generically strong and get to grinding which I just have zero interest in. That includes building Kingsmarch. Again.

Got a lucky apothecary drop while running defiled cathedral trying to scry it. I've spent about 40-50 div on my strongbox idol setup and it's feeling really good, tons of arcanist and diviners boxes, 120% quant on boxes, 100%+ chance for extra pack, around 350% chance for diviner and 200 something for arcanist atm, need a few more of those idols. And of course all rare/corrupted and double drops for those 2 boxes.
As annoying as the idol system can be, it's kinda keeping me engaged with upgrading it to get more and more loot drops and at this point it's more fun/rewarding than the atlas tree, although less flexible.
