As a new player I gotta say, this games mapping system is terrible. What's the point of artificially stopping characters from doing content they can handle? I don't understand the game design logic there. My character can steamroll tier 10, yet right now I'm stuck with a few tier 6 and 7 maps, and I just ran a tier 7 and got 3 maps drops: 2 tier 2's and a tier 3. Come the fuck on.

Then you aren't playing the game right, I can basically solo chain T8-T10, just alch the maps and turn them into rares and look for 10% and more packsize (the most important stat). This makes them significantly harder and if you want to sustain T11 and above, you need RNG and double or triple packsize mods, which means 1-3 curses and little to no regen, on top of other mods like +dmg, -%max res or reflect. I have been trying some double packsize T12 and while I roflstomp anything non-reflect on T10 and below, this was significantly more difficult and prone to instant death, I wonder what full rolled T15's are like. I also hope you are running them through Zana's map device. I agree that the system could use some tweaking, but they have been making it easier over the past 6 months to sustain decent maps, but it's one of the few currency sinks where more advanced players can blow their currency. Basically what Tenks said.
And by Zana's he means putting at least Onslaught onto it for (I think) 20% pack size. If it wasn't for POE's map system currency itself wouldn't be very valuable because the reason Chaos are the de-facto currency is because they are used atonto reroll maps.

It adds 20% IIQ when you go Onslaught sir, beyond is another good mod to add for drops and xp.

I'd be cautious with beyond, the demons have a lot of hp and hit like trucks, especially if you don't have chaos resist and god help you if you somehow pull out 2 beyond bosses at once. But the loot orgy is worth it, just that in T11 and above, you need a really solid build (and not run tabula until 90 because you can't 6link a bloody coil)
Also I think I'm officially done even trying HC. I just die too much. After my third rip I've learned my lesson that it is not for me.

Unless there is some cool challenge armor I don't usually touch HC either. I am way too yolo with my builds going all dps and just don't enjoy it as much.
There is just so much frustration. You need a flask to expel bleed and freeze as a mandatory thing. You can get an FPS spike and get bum rushed and die. You can just turn your brain off and hit a floor damage and die. You can not read all monster properties and just die. It just isn't my thing. I 100% understand the appeal but I don't have the time to constantly re-level toons.

yeah. its kindof like my discussions on arena/softcore pvp. I like playing aggressively. hardcore or penalties. you spent 99% of your time working to get back to the point of being able to compete. then, either play safe or, die and start over. Softcore, is all action all the time. and in a game like this build diversity is hit. HC you play much safer builds.
I like Zaphid's idea of some league (maybe not a 3mo league) where in SC IIQ/IIR is all like 100%+ but upon death you lose a randomly equipped item. Honestly with Cadbro flooding so many uniques into the market it possibly could have worked with this league's format. It is just the completely start over from scratch of HC I simply can't deal with.

You still get punched in the dick if you lose your 6link with lvl 20 gems vs anything else, effectively crippling your character. It would have to be somewhat predictable, but even then is it really that different from softcore ? Anyway they said 2.3 is going to be the best challenge league yet, so we shall see.

So as a relatively noob guy who just found my first 6-link item in a map, how should I go about figuring out its value? It's a 5R1B "Saintly Chainmail" ilevel 72, I can look on poe.trade but I'm not really sure what is and isn't comparable to that. Should I try to craft it into something or is that usually for people with a lot of currency to gamble with? I already use a tabula rasa on my main character.

Depends on what build you are playing, but quick look says 6links go for 50 chaos+. Crafting ilvl 72 is kinda waste, but if you can easily get the colors you need, it IS an upgrade compared to tabula. I personally suggest selling it and saving up for the unique armor with 6 links that completes your build, but if you are feeling lucky you can throw a few chaoses at it.

1. Catarina: cannot roll attack mods
2. Exalt for guaranteed +1 to socketed gems
3. Remove Catarina, add Leo +% DoT damage
4. Exalt and pray to RNGesus for IAS/Mana on Kill/another resist.

It's been a while since I crafted +3 weapons but yeah I think this should work, if the cannot roll attack mods is a suffix then it will be suffix capped and you'll be able to get both the damage over time and +2 +1.
