3.0 beta videos didn't make map boss kills look *that* slow. Certainly nowhere near a minute to kill a boss using a build capable of clearing the map in 3-4. Doing a weapon or gem swap seems a lot more common than it ever has before though. Like the build I decided on pops out GMP for Slower Projectiles when it reaches the boss/arena.

And to clarify my earlier question, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for what might be redundant in the gems with two people doing the same thing. The ones I'm wondering about:
4L: Orb of Storms > Power Charge on Crit > Inc Aoe > Culling Strike
3L: Curse on Hit > Assassins Mark > Herald of Ice/Thunder
3L: Vaal Haste > Vaal Grace > Inc Duration

Skip map boss meta? I haven't played one bit of the beta. Please enlighten me.

ya as deathwing said they ramped up map boss hp so it's a curve building up to guardians. It's less efficient to kill them given they don't give anymore items than before (at least that we know of, there are always changes that don't make it into the changelog)

you can throw blind instead of culling strike with a duo. or a few other similar type effects.
obviously dont need two assassins marks, as well. it was elemental spectral throw right? elem weakness or proj weakness. or could throw a defensive one in there. warlords, enfeeble, temp chains.

Is inc aoe or chain better for your OoS purposes?

Is evasion/dodge better or worse in 3.0? For a melee char, not qotf lab farm gimmicks and stuff, just general gameplay/mapping.
better. sortof.

higher innate evade on gear. New shield mods are fantastic. +move speed, or +dodge on evasion shields as implicits.
higher potential life on gear.

Isn't the curse limit still one though, unless someone has a skill/item to increase it (which we won't)? I've skipped a couple leagues but don't remember hearing that changed. I can't think of anything else to replace it with though.

Having 2 different curses if you're playing with a buddy is pointless because one will overwrite the other unless someone has +1 curse passive or item and then that person could just run both curses anyways.

Well, that sucks that they nerfed necromancers from what I can tell. A lot of things that granted +2 skellies now only grant +1. Plus dmg nerf to SRS. I was going to rely on SRS/zombie/skelly for early build before switching to golems/specters for dmg. Looks like ES builds took a hit, but I don't know having never played an ES toon before. I guess now I will go str/int on necro using some sorta Baron build.

My one and only toon so far (having played PoE for only the past 4 months or so) is my lvl 91 Chieftain using AW totems and sporting a 5l Starforge as weapon. Lots of fun, although I still seem to die more than I need to, so I need to figure out how to make my toon more durable. I think mapping I'm at 110/126, so getting close to the end.

I'm tempted to play a maurader again since I am comfortable with the playstyle, but at the same time I just want to do something completely different this second go-around when 3.0 hits so I think I will stick with necro despite the nerfs and just try and figure things out. Figuring things out seems to be a big part of the fun of PoE anyways.

It's really not that bad from what i've been reading. Slight damage nerf to SRS but zombies buffed a decent bit. Baron build with monteguls going to be pretty good still.

Just started playing this today. My brother mentioned it so I fired it up on Steam. Very addictive. Im enjoying it so far.

I picked a Marauder. Is this like Diablo in that there are FoTM classes and constantly rebalanced? Anything to definitely stay away from?

no there are a ton of viable classes / playstyles. if you try league when it starts on friday you should spend some time on the class forums and find a build that looks cool to you with "budget" or "league starter" in the name. It will give you a guide to follow so you don't get too frustrated when you get higher level, and it will give you a good base of knowledge to pick out or make builds in the future w/o fucking yourself.

Might try new channeled lightning spell + CWC + Storm herald. NFC if it actually works, but it seems like it'd be the lightning equivalent of Flameblast/firestorm. Could maybe throw in a brotherhood ring to get some freeze action going.

Honestly I hate doing spell casters. I'd almost rather be a trickster with a movement ability and good weapons because never worrying about mana is awesome. Unfortunately Trickster were really good for CI builds do to inherent +ES stuff. Too bad ES got nerfed too fuck and back.

@Tuco and for other new players

This guy is a goofball and hard to listen to but he knows his shit bigly. I'd seriously recomend this vid if you're new to POE (45 mins)

edit: i'm still watching but wanted to say he does jump around a lot, but still all good info.

edit2: this is actually a pretty poor pure newb guide. Decent for returning players who have some familiarity with the game. ziz needs an editor

Damn thanks muchly Kiroy Kiroy ! Very helpful stuff. The skill tree is crazy. I'm just winging it now but seems like I can't go too wrong I guess.
I'll check the forums now.

np, should add that the wiki is an excellent and updated source of information

Official Path of Exile Wiki

I still use it often for crafting recipes and to see what upgrading gems does if I'm playing builds with gems i'm not familiar with.

Here's a pro tip that people won't like, but is 100% accurate:

Don't "make up your build". This is mostly for new people. Just don't do it. The game has so many complications and nuances later on and synergies on synergies that you can very well make a character, do what you want, and get to a point like level 75 or 80. Then you hit the wall. New gear won't help. Passives won't help. You don't know the special combo between unique items or skills at that point to help you go from 10 minute maps to 5 minute maps to 2 minute maps. I know it sucks. All those skills and shit make it looks like "Weeee, I can make whatever I want! A truly custom characteter!"...but you can't. Maybe later when you're more knowledgeable, but not to start.

I'd find a nice easy build from the forums like Earthquake or Sunder or Zombies or Arc or Totems and start there. Then you'll learn some of the ins and outs and get the cool uniques yourself to start looking at more complex builds and formulating your own.

I mean, do new people really care about being able to spam out 2 minute maps for 300m exp an hour more than they do having fun using skills and trying things out? I know I would make it about 5 days tops if the only thing I could do was level to 75 and then spam out shaped strands for 10 hours a day because "omgz I need super efficiency" and then i'd never play the game again, new league or not.

I know i'd personally rather have fun running 10 minute maps than be bored shitless running 2minute maps on some boring build for no reason other than to eventually have 5000 exalts to link in chat.
