Well, that was fast. Baby was born yesterday, they had to do an emergency C-section due to moms rising blood pressure. 10 weeks early, we were right at 30 weeks. 2 lbs 8 oz, tiny little thing. Everyones doing great though, mom gets to go home probably at the end of the week and baby will probably be in the NICU for a good 6-8 weeks. No issue so far, breathing on his own just fine, no need for a ventilator or oxygen or anything yet.

Wow - congrats dad - I wont lie its such a mindjob to be exactly as far along as your wife and see that you've already delivered!!!!

Baby looks great and its awesome to hear that no assisted breathing required as of right now!! Did they give her the steroid shot to speed the lung development?

Yes, when we were first alerted to a possible blood pressure issue/pre-eclampsia 4 days ago, they went ahead and gave the steroid shot at that point. I'm sure it helped. Crazy thing is, things were looking great as recently as Sunday morning, BP was looking good, no problems, doctors were talking to us about what happens with 34 or 36 week deliveries, they thought they could get her to that point. Newp, delivered 24 hours later, shit got crazy Sunday night/Monday morning real fast.

I have my 30 week appointment tomorrow - hoping it goes well. Fit hit the shan at work (too long to get into) and I dropped 4lbs in a week. Doctor obviously is going to see any weight loss as since a month ago, not last week but considering that puts me back down to negative 13lbs in terms of change in weight from pre-pregnancy....its not the direction they're going to want. I was down 16, then as of a month ago only down 9, and I've gone and lost 4 of those 7lbs I gained back.

Meh maybe they'll be like 'well you had weight to lose' and it wont be a big deal but I'm guessing 4lb weightloss in third trimester is going to equal another ultrasound/growth scan.

Good luck, hope it goes smoother than our 30 week appointment last Thursday, that resulted in a baby by Monday, lol.

So far so good. He's a week old today, or the equivalent of 31 weeks if he were still in the womb. He dropped about 10% of his weight over the first 4 or 5 days(which is normal) so he went from 2lbs 8oz to 2lbs 4oz. He gained an ounce the last day or two though, so he's finally going in the right direction. Took 4 or 5 days to get his digestion working, was getting most of his nutrients via IV, but he's finally taking a tiny amount of breast milk (1 ml) every 3 hours, and digesting it, and pooping, so that's a great sign. Never thought I'd be so glad to know that someone is pooping. Breathing just fine on his own, no issues yet. He's still too young to do a lot of extensive testing for things like vision problems, that'll all come a few more weeks down the road.

How many grams did he weigh at birth? Did they administer prophylactic surfactant for the lung alveoli (RDS)? What about CPAP? Sounds like a real fighter, joeboo, you must be so proud, congratulations once more

Can we have more pictures of your little treasure?

He was right at 1150 grams at birth, they did administer 2 steroid shots for his lungs to my wife in the first 24 hours after she started having troubles, I assume that is the RDS(I wasn't in the room when the doctor originally explained all of that to catch the technical term for it). They did have him on a minor amount of CPAP for the first 24 hours to keep his lungs going, but he came off of it right away on day #2, he was breathing just fine on his own and has been ever since. As of right now, all they have him on is an IV for nutrients since he's only getting the 1 ml of breast milk(or colostrum or whatever it is) every 3 hours, and a little bit of caffeine to keep his heart rate from dipping too many times per day.

Heres a photo from when I had him out of his incubator holding him for a few hours yesterday. For size reference, you can kind of see the tips of my fingers and the button on my shirt, he's laying against my chest. His leg from hip to knee is roughly the size of my index finger, and his head is probably roughly the size of a baseball. My hand is bigger than his entire torso. He's a small little dude.

spoilered for size

god 8 more weeks of this.

feels.
like.
forever.

I'm asking for prescription shit on friday for this heartburn. Kid is still breech I think - I just got a nice kick square in the cervix, work has been so hellish that I've lost all the weight I gained back in the second half of second trimester (my mom wasstunnedwhen she saw me....) at this point. And if about 4lbs of this is kid at this point with a couple of lbs on top of that of fluid and placenta......The only silver lining is that I think they're goign to order another scan so it will be nice to see if the whole 'long legs' thing is still true but the kid is definitely crowding the shit out of my lungs, breathing is a pain in the ass....

God I want this to be over.

ok so scratch 4lbs of kid.

lets make that 5.

w.t.f.

that big bump we thought was the head under my ribs? no that was a KNEE. baby's head is measuring in 85th percentile.

now granted.....growth scans are notoriously inaccurate. I'm just happy though that baby is measuring big enough to where if it IS off that we're out of the woods on baby being impacted by stress/non eating on my part due to work.

OTOH...I was a 9.33 lb baby at birth. my head was big. my sisters head was big. my niece's head was big. VP looked at me today and asked...."so if that kids' already 5lbs....where the hell are you carrying it? you're not big enough to have a 5lb baby in there."

also, yay for a prilosec prescription!

Well, that's a good thing. Sure growth scans are inaccurate, but if they had any cause for concern they would have acted on it I'm sure. This is the worst part of the pregnancy, but you're almost there!
