Eat the horses. Bam. WinIt's the middle of December and I have fucked up badly. I have created a supply of food for the winter but forgot that my horses can't eat the food I made. My stable of horses is starting to become starved and I don't know if my population has enough food to last the winter. Whatever mechanism that scales the enemy raiders has spiked and now I am getting raids I can barely survive. I am committed to this save but do not believe I will survive the long winter.

They make expeditions ultra fast. with horses you can use a road to make a weeks long expedition up the road to trade for medicine or food in a day and a half.Is there a benefit to raising horses? Nowadays I just keep pigs for meat and I keep trainable animals that go out with my hunters. I managed to get a male and female thrumbo and now they're breeding.
Whow whow whow. There's a lot you can do. The upside of winter is that meat won't spoil in freezing temperatures. If you can spare someone, send them on a trading mission. Get rid of any wealth on your map that isn't helping keep you alive or defend your colony.
Slaughter extra ponies, you just need to keep one male and a few females. Horses can eat horse meat if you cook it into simple meals first.
Set someone to hunt ur map for death. and mark every animal on yo
If you have enough steel, build a greenhouse. You need batteries to run those sun lamps during the day. Hydroponics are much more expensive so just build it somewhere close with good soil.
The real danger when food starts getting low is that colonists will eat raw ingredients. This gives them bad thoughts as well as wasting food. Cooked simple meals have like twice the nutrition of raw ingredients. Turn that off in their food preferences.
My colony is going well.
I discovered some kind of Danger Zone that had some monsters in it and a bunch of cryogenically frozen super soldiers in it. I sealed it up, then built a tunnel of traps out of it. Then I wait until a massive caravan of friendly traders visited my town. I cracked open the Danger Zone, shot open the cryotube, the super soldiers burst out and killed the monsters then chased my guy through the traps and into the caravan. A huge war broke out between the caravan and the 5ish super soldiers. I stayed in the back plinking them with my shitty bolt action rifle, bow, etc. When there was one soldier left I charged in and beat them to death with my fists. I was disappointed I couldn't capture any of them and turn them into a colonist, but I got a ton of assault rifles and other endgame weapons out of it.
