Built a wall around my shithole base and a killbox. I tested it against bears and they got annihilated. I also built a huge pasture with dandelions. I have no idea what dandelions do.

I looked for a way to auto-hunt certain animals and I guess I need to download Steam Workshop::Colony Manager Colony Manager, which requires a fresh save, so I guess it's manual hunting for me.

I caught this monster and am trying to extract genes from him. First extraction got me..... Awful Animals. I remain hopeful future extractions will provide the geneseed for future monsters.

This is the tale of Orozco and Gaston.

They are two of the original colonists, picked to have perfect genetics. They have created 5 children so far using Ovum extraction and fertilization. Child number six is being fertilized in this picture.

Unfortunately, Orozco hates Gaston. She has a husband whose fate is unknown, and Orozco's creepy breathing is enough to dissuade her to leave her husband.

So instead, they will populate the colony one jerk off into a bowl at a time. Gaston meanwhile has perma depression from getting rejected everytime Orozco sees him.

He literally says he was disappointed he couldnt capture any of them. lol
It's been a while and I have played a couple games of Dwarf Fort since then, but don't you need to have the jail all set up before it gives you the option to capture? My guess is he failed to do that first, since it's the sort of thing burred in the mountain of things to learn.

Couple minor tips:

Doors are the main source of heat loss so you want to reduce the number of doors between areas you are trying to heat/cool. An airlock with two wooden doors separated by one space works great for walk-in freezers. Doubling up the walls helps too (I see you did that already)

Make the pasture much larger so the animals can live off naturally regrowing plants. If you have to manually plant things for them to eat, it will cost you far too much pawn work time. Place a pen marker and click on it, it will show you how many animals it can support. Animal population can spiral out of control in the amount of work needed so cull/sell regularly.

Add fire breaks in fields

I've got an idea how I want to build a colony, but I don't want to tell you people what I'm planning because you might give me hints.

I packed up all my shit and moved to a new space with my colonists. We'll see if I can build a fence before all my cattle and horses and boomalopes run off. Or a raid comes and wrecks my shit. I don't know how raid difficulty is scaled (don't tell me), so I don't know if having literally zero structures impacts that.

I have accumulated a small army of vat grown children and they seem pretty helpful even if they distract the adults. The two that have had growth events have gotten runspeed and production buffs, so they are definitely turning into super colonists.

I also recruited a vampire. There seem to be a lot of options for him, don't tell me what they are.

I rescued a molerat girl from a crashing ship then the next year captured a wolfman raider. Several years later they are having a wedding. I can't wait to see what kind of deranged moledog children they produce.

Day 12ish of my new colony. I'm experimenting with boomalopes and finally found some pigs, so hopefully I won't get a huge pile of corpses stinking up the map.

Depending on the map climate you can design around it somewhat by using a dining room as the airlock. Pawns don't care about eating in a cold room as long as it's not giving them hypothermia.

I built my killbox and had my first raid, unfortunately they didn't path into my base. I think I need to move the killbox closer to the center of my base.

Witness Galga, the world's unluckiest NPC.


I've been preping for days for my first usage of mortars to attack a defoliator ship. Immediately after I start shelling, Galga waltzes in right next to the Exfoliator ship and immediately gets lasered.

I haven't run the numbers on windmills vs solar vs boomlope chemfuel, but the idea of siphoning gasoline out of an animal is hilarious.

My first winter in the new area just started. I've moved my killbox to be as close as possible to the core of my base, but I haven't gotten to test it against a good raid yet!
I'm building a wall around the entire quadrant I'm occupying. I'm selling my extra animals but it's seemingly hard to sell them quickly enough!!
