Science!! Fucking magnets, how do they work?

Irish kids making a tiny dent in agricultural science.

After discovering nodules growing on pea plants in a family garden, which turned out to be the result of a reaction by the plant to bacteria in the soil, the teens began an investigation. They learned that the presence of certain bacteria can instill a sort of fear in a plant, causing it to speed up germination, so as to avoid being overtaken. They wondered what would happen if seeds were treated with a bacteria laden liquid before planting. To find out, they planted a garden with several different types of plants, some with treated seeds, others without, then tended the garden to see what impact the treatment would have.

I just read the past few pages of the thread, saw mention of the fish/oceans/conservation. Being as I've lived land locked isolated from the ocean my whole life, I don't think about the ocean at all, in my day to day experience. Compared to say the mountains and forests and rivers near my home. I watched this documentary on a whim a few months ago and thought I'd plug the recommendation in case anyone has interest.Mission Blue (2014) - IMDb

The most mind blowing thing from that article is the realization that Curiosity has been kicking it on Mars for over two years.

That was pretty poor sarcasm since it didn't translate well in the post ;p

Always cool to see paleontology finds like this...makes you wonder what else is still hidden out there.

Yea, I don't quite get it, but it sounds cool. I get some of it, I think. I need to time travel into the future so I can hear Neil DeGrasse Tyson explain it simplistically after it's found to be true.

Basically.... Get a flashlight and shine it on the floor. Record how long it took to travel that distance (lol) now do the same thing but do it running. The distance the light traveled was in an angle and covered more distance but it took the same time to travel a greater distance in the same amount of time.

That is what is being discussed.

Isn't that just what time dilation is? I think the dark energy correlation is a result of the directional time dilation... the "missing" energy is just a sort of mis-measurement /incorrect calibration.

I could just be high though.

The gist of it is relativity says there are no preferred reference frames. The only thing that is important is relative motions, hence the name of the theory. This guy says that if you allow for preferred reference frames (in this case he bases one around gravity) then you can have directional time dilation and explain away dark energy.

He doesn't really explain why there should be preferred reference frames. And I'm not sure about his evidence with GPS satellites.

Interesting if true.

Correct, relatively says their are no preferred reference frames. That said, there's no way to explain how objects can spin when preferred reference frames don't exist. There's a reason traditional physics is used within relativity whenever stuff decides to spin.

So this is heresy against the preachings of the prophet Einstein. I declare a fatwa against the heretic.

I think I left the camera in the other cave.

Einstein didn't like quantum mechanics either but over the past half century or more the prevailing opinion has been to shut up and calculate.
