As long as movies lean far enough to the 7X / 100 side and avoid the RT trap for 5-7 scores they will never be rated poorly.

But people aren't getting out of their homes and into a theater seat for less than 8/10, likely higher, to do the big box offices.

shang chi is also a bit of a landmine for critics being the first MCU asian movie. there's definitely a curve where Dr. Strange (deservedly) gets marked down for being boring, but Captain Marvel or Black Widow or Black Panther don't take any hits because of their cast diversity.

Any critic who trashes Shang Chi runs the real risk of losing their job if they don't tread carefully, and then you layer in how china is involved (or not)

fair enough, that just says there is no point in having critics review them.

Yeah, movies with "universal acclaim" in modern times a lot of the times means "better than mediocre". Mixed review movies tend to be the more exciting ones, cause it made people have an opinion other than "it sure was a movie!". They might have missed, but at least they tried, which is what I was hoping for from this movie (a long shot from the mouse to be sure). Take some fucking risks, its Shang Chi. Although, if the Villain truly is memorable, that would be a step in the right direction now that Loki is done with that role.

i looked at the reviews they submitted and its ridiculous. basically "film has pacing issues and is predictable, but its inclusion and representation is incredible. 7/10!" I'm like yeah, good review.

If you're expecting anything more than an average MCU introductory flick for a new character I don't know what to tell you. None of the solo films have been anything more than just OK except for maybe the first Iron Man.

Not the reviews I read, which highlighted

+ Very solid Martial Arts action (not quite the highest Hong Kong level, but apparently very good for Hollywood with surprisingly few jump cuts/edits to hide sub-par stuntwork).
+ Very solid supporting cast managing the marvel-mix of humour/drama better than most
+ Better-than-average villain with motivations you can empathise with.

- Main actor decent at comedy, but flat in acting dramatic scenes
- Flat Marvel Visuals / Score
- Predicable action

In sum: Average Marvel Solo flick.

Dumb Trumpbillies trying to stir up another flimsy "diversity controversy" for the Breittards bubble is just sad and as always wholly detached from reality.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has plenty of heart and adventurous spirit to satisfy superhero movie fans. It's too bad that the title character has a personality that's duller than the average Marvel superhero.

A killer turn from legend Tony Leung, some impressive action and sporadically moving moments can't help the fact that Simu Liu is one of the most boring MCU leads in the megafranchise's existence.

stylish MCU flick with amazing direction that is fun and exciting. See, Hollywood? This is what happens when you finally let an Asian director helm an Asian-led action flick

Despite its representational bona-fides, could not be a more purely generic exercise from this machine that eats cinema.

Despite pacing issues, it delivers a hugely entertaining step in the right direction for Asian representation.

Shang-Chi certainly deserves credit as a groundbreaking step of representation in mega-budget filmmaking. You just desperately wish that the terrain it treads upon didn't feel so safe.

The best standalone MCU film since Black Panther.

One of Marvel's messiest efforts, with a stellar front half that quickly retreats back to the studio's comfort zone.

On the screen, Shang-Chi is rotely defined by the same "gifted kid" impostor syndrome as so many other self-doubting MCU heroes before him

It's an entertaining romp, although the formulaic quality is becoming a little obvious.

Shang-Chi is as bland and busy as its titl

Shang-Chi is sure to make its mark as an important milestone of representation in the history of superhero cinema.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a confident introduction to Marvel's first Asian superhero,

What's Wong, chopped liver? I mean, he was in Doctor Strange doing his thing and standing alongside the world's heroes taking on Thanos in Infinity War and Endgame.

Or Mantis for that matter albeit a bit more tenuous as she's portrayed as an alien.

yep Mantis, played by a half Korean female, subdued Thanos when nobody else could.

You say "Trumpbillies" trying to cook up a diversity controversy, but I don't recall seeing any of that... Asian guy.. Playing an Asian hero. The controversy is them watering down all the Fu Manchu look for the bad guy because they don't want to piss off China, which I can understand.

And then them trying to appease China more by picking a Chinese directory and inadvertently picking one the CCP would apparently like to have erased.

I figure I will pirate and watch this at some point just because I like a good martial arts flick.

shang-chi-trailer-abomination-wong-fight-1.jpg

First post credit scene is Wong with Shang-Chi [Simu Liu[ and Katy [Awkwafina] in the Sanctum. They are talking with Bruce Banner [Mark Ruffalo] (human form, not professor hulk) and Captain Marvel [Brie Larson] (has long hair now) and they talk about the Ten Rings as a power just showing up and how there’s other things in the universe they must not know about. Bruce and Carol are there using the same kind of hologram tech Natasha uses to talk with them in Endgame They also mention that there’s something in the Ten Rings acting as a beacon sending a signal. When Katy and Shang ask where it’s sending to, Cap Marvel gets a message and she and Bruce leave. Bruce is also still wearing a sling. Wong basically says to them ‘welcome to the team’ and it ends with the three of them going to karaoke and singing Hotel California.

After credits, [Shang-Chi’s] sister is in her old room, someone says ‘they’re here’ she walks out, shes taken over her dad’s palace, the 10 rings banner is now reddish, her gang is around her while she sits on the throne. zooms out and people are training and the base now has some graffiti, etc showing the new leader. ‘The Ten Rings Will Return.’
