lol Shang Chi is supposed to showcase a hero that looks like a huge segment of the globe, yet the movie has no scheduled release date in China. Once a movie releases in the west and its more than a month or two it won't get a Chinese release. Thats like releasing Black Panther only in Vermont.
So both Eternals and Shang Chi are unlikely to get chinese box office money at this point, and they are both heavily asian involved - stars with Shang Chi, Eternals director is Chloe Zao who is in hot water with the CCP for comments made.

and they still havent decided if they will release Eternals theatrically yet.

Presumably Shang Chi was in production long before the 'rona landed but it surely has been impacted by anti-Chinese sentiment as a result.
It'll get the finger from plenty of Western audiences and won't be allowed to be screened to the Eastern ones so the mouse will no doubt be stung by this.
That aside from the fact Western martial arts movies/shows just generally fucking suck and the Eastern ones are usually so tied up in mystical bullshit and wirework it's beyond a joke.

Current China-movie embargo is all movies, not just Shang Chi or even just Disney. They pulled out all US production to preserve their delta-variant depressed box office for Chinese productions. The last US movie to open in China was Peter Rabbit 2.
China is blocking Shang Chi the same as they are blocking The Suicide Squad, Black Widow, Jungle Cruise, Free Guy, Nu-Space Jam. Whatever. If China opens their screens to US movies again, they'll all get a shot.

thats why a heavy kung fu movie like Matrix works while 99% of the US has never even heard of The Shaw Brothers's films. cut the mysticism down, insert a white guy and put in some watered down martial arts and slow down the action. instant money maker.

it makes no sense for them to be speaking in english. its like in movies where German nazis would speak in the Queen's English. the real truth, is that the movie studios dont like putting shit in subtitles. the popular complaint is "i want to watch a movie, not read it" . its a real thing, but the answer to that is then dont place the movie in fucking china. just have it be white guys or american asians who discovered their ancient past or whatever.i'll tell you the lowdown

I don't know how Hollywood finances work, but I do know that they get much more share of a domestic gross than the international one (hence why we track both), and Black Panther and Captain Marvel are the 2nd and 6th highest grossing domestically (all the others being the Avengers movies), so, depending on what the revenue share is for Disney/Marvel's international distributors are, it kinda seems like they are paying enough for their liking.
Shang-Chi obviously won't have anywhere near those numbers due to the current movie release reality, but we will be able to see how it stacks up to Widow, Fast 9, Space Jam, Free Guy, etc

Captain Marvel was marketed as a must see because of Endgame. you can dismiss that shit right there. Black Panther was a jogger event. it was promoted on radio. even in schools. fucking jogger schools were targetted for this hype.
