BBC News - Apple security rules leave inherited iPad useless, say sons

A man whose mother bequeathed her iPad to her family in her will says Apple's security rules are too restrictive.

Josh Grant, 26, from London, told BBC Radio 4's You & Yours his mother bought the tablet during her cancer treatment.

Since her death, they have been unable to unlock the device, despite providing Apple with copies of her will, death certificate and solicitor's letter.

Apple says its security measures have led the industry in helping customers protect lost or stolen devices...

...After her death, they discovered they did not know her Apple ID and password, but were asked to provide written consent for the device to be unlocked.

Mr Grant said: "We obviously couldn't get written permission because mum had died. So my brother has been back and forth with Apple, they're asking for some kind of proof that he can have the iPad.

"We've provided the death certificate, will and solicitor's letter but it wasn't enough. They've now asked for a court order to prove that mum was the owner of the iPad and the iTunes account...

Yeah, people will bitch and moan about how restrictive it is....until their own device gets stolen.
Not like a thief is going to return the fucker, just making a bunch of paperweights ect unless you want to buy the boards and put in a new one like im doing. Im sure there will be ways around it in the next yeah

Yeah, responsiveness I give high marks to Apple for, it's when I want to do anything other than explicitly allowed to do with the device that I run into troubles and are probably why I won't go back to that ecosystem.
Except jailbreaking your iPhone is leaps and bounds easier to do than rooting your Android device. From there you can change just about anything on the iPhone you would want?

Yeah... jailbreaking is "leaps and bounds" easier than Android. Yes I'm talking about a Nexus device, but anyone who's not using a Nexus is doing it wrong.

Yeah, I don't know how easy or hard it is to jailbreak and iPhone, but I know on one of my Motorola phones (Bionic maybe?) unlocking/rooting was as simple as downloading an app and clicking 1 button within that app. Don't see how it gets much easier than that.

I won't deny that some manufacturers make it much more difficult than others, but that is on them, not Android.

I dont care for the nexus lines and people are always having issues with them as far as jailbreaking it doesnt get much easies than plugging your phone in and clicking jailbreak. Rooting the galaxies is a lot more of a pain. Put the phone in developer mode, then get odin, get the proper .tar then you need the apps like super su and clockwork mod. There is a lot of phones with easy 1 click root

Enjoy making calls/doing anything with your phone while your in town I suppose. Some of us want a carrier that works.

That was my thought but didn't know enough to accuse with certainty. Thanks.

Other than Verizon I wouldn't say much. But they've been pretty pants on head retarded about not carrying the Nexus line + doing their best to lock down and deny root, su, custom bootstrap, etc... to their other devices. With enough effort you can do it, however my understanding is that with T-Mo, AT&T, and Sprint most of the one click apps still work. It isn't like manufacturers are taking much of a hardline either though.

Verizon sucks ass plenty of places, so if they were referencing Verizon being harder to root being the cost of good service - they're quite misinformed as well. (And it's not just city vs rural either - area I'm looking at in Florida has the worst connectivity reports from Verizon and it's very rural - TMobile being #1 and Sprint being #2 there [its an odd market near Cape Canaveral, I guess])

I will not deny, some phones are very easy to root. Other phones, like most on the Verizon network that I'm on, are a pain in the ass, imo. I was surprised at how easy it was on the iPhone, regardless of what carrier you were on. Was able to jailbreak, and bring back my quick reply text messaging I had on my Android through Handcent. Sweetness.

Anyone figured out the Galaxy 5 will hold up against the Galaxy Note 3? I typically use a Smartphone for years at a time and wouldn't even be asking if my wife didn't like new shiny things.

Nokia Lumia 1520 Outperforms Samsung Galaxy S5 in Basemark X Gaming Benchmark

tl;dr: Windows phones using DirectX perform better than Android phones using OpenGL, given same/similar hardware

And Windows Phones have finally moved into 3rd place in global market share, overtaking blackberry (mostly thanks to BBs decline, not that Windows Phone is rapidly growing or anything)
