Are you suggesting that Windows Phone OS offers all the customization you want out of the box? Either your bar is really low or you are full of shit. As far as the browser handling everything, the web still has plenty of flash on it, how is watching youtube on a windows phone these days?
Windows phone is far from perfect, but no mobile OS is perfect. I am a BB10 user, previously a WebOS user- I sink the sinking ships apparently- but I choose my OSes for what they are and how they manage everything and how I personally like to manage my mobile device- and well...keyboards.

At the time of purchase my Palm Pre made me compromise a lot LOT less than the iOS and Android of the time- real multitasking, front facing multi tasking/task management, no restriction on push imap and exchange account numbers- tasks, calendar syncing - contact search and sync across accounts exchange local facebook etc- it also had flash as you mention- as does my blackberry and much much more- now a bunch of years later almost all of that is standard issue.

With both of my excursions into Android I loved and hated the customization- and overall I enjoy an OS that has everything "stock/vanilla" vs me building it myself with 10+ apps by various people that each in their own crash at any time and each programed with various levels of competency.

Yeah, I don't get the "apps don't matter" attitude. They might not matterfor youbut that doesn't make everyone else a sheeple. I have 5 apps that I use regularly in which there flat out isn't a Windows mobile version of them nor a mobile website with similar functionality. I use several other apps which the Windows versions are inferior. And I really wanted to get onboard with a Windows phone too, I really did. I thought Nokia was putting out the best hardware (especially when it came to cameras) and the OS seemed nice in my limited usage. But when I look at how I use my phone the apps ecosystem is a dealbreaker.

On a non-OS switch I'd agree with Tarrant - but for OS switching I could see many people taking more than 2 weeks before a fair evaluation. (Two weeks of learning the OS differences before bothering with app ecosystem/etc)

Eh, for more people I think it's pretty okay. I can see why some would want more but your avg. joe is going to decide if they love it or hate it fairly quickly.

So I wanted to upgrade from my Galaxy S2 to the new S5 while still staying with Virgin ($35 unlim text and data, yes please) and I come to find out that the fucking phone costs $600. Jesus Christ. If this is the trend when it comes to prices of phones, then please just bring back 2 year contracts so that new phones don't cost the same as a computer or whatever. (Grumbles) Get off my lawn and some shit......

If I could trust any network other than Verizon I'd jump ship in a heartbeat and get a Nexus 5 or wait for the One Plus One to become widely available. They seem like no brainers for phones that size.

You've always been paying for your phone. Before now providers were just building it into your plan where you weren't seeing it. The difference now though is (if on sprint T-Mobile and Verizon Edge) you plan goes down when you pay the phone off where as before it didn't. That was the whole reason for contracts, for them to make that money back on the device.

Ya, what Tarrant said above. Phones have always cost that much. Just because you were getting it subsidized by a contract, doesn't mean the phone didn't cost that much. And again, just as Tarrant said, if you think the phone companies weren't building it into the cost of the plan, you are delusional. haha!

Verizon gotta make their milions $$

So are the phone companies just price gouging people then cause it is the new hot shit phone? How does the S5 cost $600 when the just announced Surface 3 with a 12 inch screen, yadda, yadda, yadda, cost $800?

Samsung gouges - reportedly the phone costs in the $250 ballpark to produce. Margins on phones are all over the place however - I've seen some that are barely breaking even and others that are making boku profit at the common $600-650 mark.

Correct, when a provider sells you a phone outright for $600, that's how much those providers paid for that phone. They make absolutely zero on the phones themselves.

The profit margin on these phones are enormous, why do you think every tech company was clammoring to get a piece of the pie?

As the subsidy from the carriers slowly goes away I think you will see that the $600-700 price tag will become a harder sell. Most people have no idea how much a phone really costs, they are used to paying $200 for their new iphone every 2 years.

Samsung and apple phones both have a huge margin, though I think apple's is higher

The thing that pisses me off the most about how they price phones is how they charge for storage space. $100 to go from 16 to 32gb? Fuck you apple. It costs you like $2.

To be fair, the carrier pricing for the nexus 5 was beyond fucked up. How the fuck do they justify a higher price than direct from google?
