Sprint charged $449 when it came out. I'm seeing $399 now, I don't see $299
Originally it was $349 I thought? But yea, plenty were charging $399-449 for it out of the gate.

It was a weird case though, since the theory is that it was being subsidized by Google to some degree, perhaps Google didn't subsidize the ones they didn't sell directly to consumers - if so the stores really weren't gouging (or gouging much).

The way I figure it, going off-contract and buying your own phones only makes sense if you are saving $20 a month or more. Over your 2 year contract thats $480, and since buying an upgrade phone generally costs you $100-$200 up front, you're right back at the phone basically costing you roughly $600-700.

Buying your own phone only makes sense, financially, if you are either keeping it longer than 2 years, or if your off-contract plan is $20+ a month cheaper than an on-contract price.

But the way the general public works, 90% of people would rather pay $200 up front and an extra $20 a month for 2 years than ever have to shell out $600 at once, even though that $600 is the cheaper option.

I'd buy phones outright even if they were a (slight)financial loss compared to a subsidized contract. Anything that hides true prices from the consumer(hi2u healthcare industry) just promotes bad decisions from the consumers and non-competitiveness. This is really one of the instances where you can vote with your wallet without having to stop service altogether, that's quite rare. And while yes, it's something trivial like $50/month, feels good man.

The problem will come when the carriers stop subsidizing phones and the cost of the plans do not go down.

I don't see that happening. ATT already knocks $15 off per month for each phone you bring. VZW I think is the only major retailer not offering a plan that discounts for already having a phone. Unless you count that edge crap in some twisted way.

My Note 3 died via a watery death. Instead of paying $150 insurance deductible I went with the HTC One (M8) Gunmetal. Should be here tomorrow. My first HTC, pretty excited.

Gaige is getting an HTC? Sonuvabitch guess I've got to change my mind on it now....

J/k of course, good to see you joining the dark side on phones - I can't imagine you'll be disappointed. It's a wonderful phone - my only regret with it is missing the Harmon-Kardon edition that Sprint has since I adopted before it was announced.

After having the M8 for a few days now, thing is slippery as hell. I'm definitely getting a case for it soon but holy shit... I've never had a phone that I felt like could fly out of my hand at any given moment. Get a case if you're getting an M8. The battery is great. I'd post a few pictures but I went about 28 hours with medium usage and still had about 33% left this morning. The stock charger charges it up very fast, which is nice I guess too. I'm in a bit of a rush or I'd post a more thorough personal review - probably able to do that this weekend.

Your grip will adjust on it as time goes on, but yea, first couple days it does like to slip a bit. Fortunately it tests incredibly well for drops and falls though - took a TEN FOOT drop onto concrete for it to crack the screen in drop tests. (In comparison the iPhone and Galaxy 5 both cracked at 4 and 6 feet respectively in the same test)

Not to burst bubbles here but drop tests are a joke. You can never replicate the same drop twice. I've seen iPhones get run over by semi trucks and be okay and I've seen them shatter dropping 16 inches off a couch onto a carpeted floor. With working on phones daily I've seen an M8 literally crack a screen from someone putting a case on it, I've seen a heat gun dropped on one and nothing happened. Screens are finicky when it comes to breaking.

Just....don't put a ton of stock into them is all I'm saying. (I love the M8 by the way, I'm not saying it's a bad phone in any shape or form.)

I ordered this for it, gets good reviews:

Maverick HTC One M8 Case URBAN ARMOR GEAR

I've had UAG cases on my Note 2, Note 3 and now my HTC One. I like them, great value for the money. Kind of wish they were water proof/resistant though but those cases add way too much bulk. I ALMOST went with the S5 because of it's water resistance but my mom has one and I wasn't too impressed. Pretty similar to the Notes I've already owned. The reviews about the build quality sold me on the M8 and I'd like to try SenseUI, I've heard it's come a long way.

If you have your own device, any plan 8GB or less gets a $10 discount, a plan with 10GB or higher gets a $25 discount for a smartphone.

While true that they're variable, there's been many tests from different groups, all with M8 doing the best of the three.

But real world will always have some outlying cases. Part of why I personally still use an Otterbox Defender on mine. Durable is good, durable with a durable case is better.

I find it humorous that everyone references the design/casing of the M8 as one of it's best features, and then in their next breath talk about what plastic casing they are going to cover it up with for protection. Such a waste. Because of that factor, I just don't see the appeal of the M8, most people will cover up it's defining feature. It's second best feature (speakers) are something that most people rarely, if ever use. I don't know anyone that listens to music via the built-in speakers on their phone. Its always headphones or bluetooth. Another great feature that most people will never really use at all.
