I can't figure this out for the life of me. Something recently changed with my phone/Android OS that is killing my batter life at a much faster rate than normal. I'm on a Note 3 with Sprint, and for the year that I've had the phone, I'd lose about 1% of battery life per hour that it idles with the screen off. I'm now losing 5% per hour as of this week, and I changed nothing with my phone(I haven't downloaded any new apps this week)

Before, when not using my phone at all, the biggest % usage would be "cell standby" with the android services underneath that, but Android is doign something crazy as of late.

I was down to 70% battery life after my phone being unplugged and not using it whatsoever from 8am - 1pm. at 1pm I browed reddit and a few other websites and it dropped another few % because of the screen.

I've never seen Android OS and Android services taking up that huge of a % of my battery life, I'm not sure what is going on. I used to make it to bedtime with 50% of my battery left and now I have to re-charge in the evening.

Anyone experiencing anything similar as of this week?

You're probably going to have to download BetterBatteryStats, which requires rooting your phone. What does the awake bar say?

snagged Better Battery Stats, I'm rooted so no problem there. Will probably report back tomorrow or so after it's collected some data

Do you use google voice, and if so, did you migrate your SMS and call services to the new hangouts app? I did recently, and it's had a noticeable effect on my battery life. I still have my GVoice texts through the Hangouts app, but I use the normal dialer for GVoice calls because it was screwing up my battery life too badly. Even when idle, there is a ~5% / hr drain on my battery (LG G2) when I used to have around 1-2%/hr. Sometimes powering off and restarting helps me (no idea why). Anyways, hangouts might have something to do with it. Google loves to mess with their core apps, and a lot of them get lumped into google play services / android OS / system so you can't even pinpoint the issue.

It might also be that your battery is getting old and finally ready for a replacement. It happens, and fortunately Android makes it easy for you to swap it out.

I'll be the one to ask the obvious first solution: Have you rebooted since this started?

Otherwise BBS should tell you what wakelocks are chewing through your battery.

Dumb Question (kinda): Does anyone use Verizon's prepaid options? I am thinking about going that route but just want to double check there aren't any stupid caveats to it like no voicemail or anything stupid like that. I am likely getting the Note 4 but don't want to be locked down for 2 fucking years with them again.

To do that, you'll have to pay for the phone in full ($749 after tax). I did that just because they no longer offer unlimited 4g, and I'm holding on to that because I'll eventually "need" it and it will no longer be available.

Hmm, tempted to grab that since I think the N6 is just going to be too big.

I'm very happy with it. Running slim bacon with Franco.

I won't buy another Samsung or any other device that is locked down. I'll go back to apple if I'm going to deal with a walled garden if the developer type devices ever go away.

God damnit T-mobile. Looks like I might be fucked on that $200 promotion because of their computer system. When I ordered my phone appearently it went through as just a regular purchase, not a trade in. Talked to someone and lady said theres nothing she can do to modify the order that all I can do is cancel the order and reorder it, but then that wouldnt qualify for the promotion.

Your only prayer is to call customer service and demand to speak to the Loyalty department. It's got TMobile's only customer service people worth a damn.

The locked devices are only with Verizon. Other carriers have unlocked bootloaders on their Samsung devices. However, if you wait and buy the full price Developer Edition Samsung phones for Verizon, they have unlocked bootloaders. Verizon is just an asshole company, but they have the best service so I will continue to take it up the ass from them.

Verizon and at&t. Leaving two pretty shitty carriers left which I don't care about.

The developer versions for $750 aren't worth it as well. I'll stick with my 1 plus.

I see smart phone prices dropping over the next few years. People are going to have less and less reason to upgrade and eventually it will look like the television market.

Kinda agree with this. Screen resolution already far exceeds anything we can see with our eyes in such a tiny space (talking phones here). We might see some camera / sensor development, but I think all aspects are really getting to the point of diminishing returns. The only thing really left that needs work is battery life / power saving features in the phone itself. There is going to have to be some new "must-have" hardware addition to push prices up, but I just don't see it happening.

Yep, part of why I didn't mind going all out this time, pretty sure this generation will last me until 2020 or so unless I'm clumsy.

HTCs repair service seriously mitigates the risk of clumsiness too. $60 screen repairs that they end up replacing the whole damn phone is crazy good as a consumer. (or free in the first 6 months)
