How are release days for phone now, am I go into have to pre-order if I want it on day 1 or do they usually have a surplus?
I was able to walk into a Sprint store on the day of release and buy a Samsung Galaxy S2, S3, and S4 on their respective release dates. I don't know if Samsung just does a great job producing enough phones to avoid shortages, or the fact that Sprint is a distant 3rd in popularity means that they don't sell out of anything, but I've had no issues getting those phones.

Pardon my ignorance. Why the fuck did they go with that design choice? Google as a company has always struck me as one in favor of the consumer getting what they want. Just look at the Android OS. It can't add that much to the CPC can it?
I remember Google explaining it back when the Galaxy Nexus was released.

We got tired of seeing OEMs include many GB of internal storage for music, while users were still running out of space for apps and data. This approach lets us merge everything on one volume, which is way better.
-- Dan Morrill, Android engineer at Google

The lack of a SD card is the only issue I have with my Nexus 4. The 16GB version has about 12.5 gigs of usable space, which gets eaten up fast when I have music, a nandroid backup, Titanium Backup of my apps plus the apps themselves. I wish They had a 32 GB option like the Galaxy Nexus had, that was plenty for me.

No microsd is a huge fuck you to the consumer with how badly they fuck you in the ass when buying a 16gb model v 32gb. That reason is total bullshit, they just want you to use their shitty cloud services.

Dont support bad manufactures/devices.

So, I drunkenly lost my phone last night and am now in the market for a new cell phone. I've been an Iphone user forever, but have recently been planning an eventual divorce from the IOS. Any recommendations between the One and Galaxy? or is there something else I should be looking into that is out or coming out soon? I don't follow the cell phone market much so I'm pretty oblivious to what's going on these days.

The new Google Nexus phone, and new Samsung Note 3 may see releases this year, but if you are completely without a phone I doubt you would want to wait too long to get another.

Samsung S4 or HTC One is pretty much the way to go if you are going Android on a major carriers plan

I work in IT so I had the luxury of just coming to work and taking one of our spare 5s so I guess I'm not really in that much of a rush to get another one. I'll check those other 2 phones out though.

I'm curious as hell who is going to buy Blackberry, and for how much. What a clusterfuck of destroyed shareholder value.

I know a few people who still prefer physical keyboards to touchscreen keyboards. If blackberry would make an Android-based phone with some of the same features that Blackberry is known for, they might have something worth buying. As it is, they are so far behind the curve at this point that they are never going to be able to get any significant market share with their own proprietary OS. Hitch your wagon to Android and see if you can survive a little longer.

BBC Technology News - Microsoft to buy Nokia's mobile phone unit

Microsoft has agreed a deal to buy Nokia's mobile phone business for 5.4bn euros ($7.2bn; ?4.6bn).

Nokia will also license its patents and mapping services to Microsoft. Nokia shares jumped 35% on the news, whereas Microsoft's fell more than 5%.

The purchase is set to be completed in early 2014, when about 32,000 Nokia employees will transfer to Microsoft.

Nokia has fallen behind rivals Samsung and Apple, while critics say Microsoft has been slow into the mobile market.

Describing the deal as a "big, bold step forward", Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer told the BBC that his company was in the process of transforming itself from one that "was known for software and PCs, to a company that focuses on devices and services".

"We've done a lot of great work in the two-and-a-half years that we've been in partnership with Nokia, going literally from no phones to 7.4 million smart Windows phones in the last quarter that was reported," he said.

But he admitted: "We have more work to do to expand the range of applications on our product."

...
This could turn it around for Nokia/Microsoft?

I don't think BB has the large patent portfolio that would make it attractive buy for anyone.

I did see an article that BB might spin off its messenger service into a separate company.

Ah, I thought that they would have had a pretty huge list of patents, given that they pioneered the entire smartphone concept.

The people who love their BBM can't seem to explain why they love it.

Have they not used FBM?

I find it hard to believe either are better than the Note 2.
the Note 2 is basically a giant Galaxy S3, with a few software features that the S4 has. Technologically, it falls in-between the S3 and S4(S3 hardware with some S4 software). So unless the larger(yet lower resolution) screen is a deciding factor, the S4 is superior tech.
