I don't know the intricacies of GPS either. But if your phone can communicate with orbiting satellites, but mine has reception problems with towers just miles away, I'd be very surprised.

So, I'm going to root my phone and put a rom on it.

Do I need to put a kernel on it? Or just the ROM? What rom/kernel do people like??

You don't NEED to put a Kernel on it, but I would recommend the Franco Kernel. I can't remember but it may come packaged with some of the custom ROMs. As far as for which ROM, depends on how close to, or far away from the stock Android experience you want to go. I personally just run stock Jelly Bean on my Nexus 4 right now, but enjoyed playing with Paranoid Android. CyanogenMod is also very popular.

I think you got a lemon of a galaxy nexus. Mine isn't great but it's much better than yours. I generally get 8-12 hours out of mine and that is leaving wifi, GPS, etc on, listening to podcasts all day, and being in an area with very spotty cell coverage. I do absolutely nothing to save my battery, I don't use the extended battery, etc. and if I take the phone off the charger at 8 AM it's usually good until at least 7 PM and if I can plug it in for a half hour at lunch it's good until I go to bed.

Yeah, I haven't had WiFi, GPS, etc. on for a very long time. I dunno if it's the apps or something. ;\ How do you tell if something is actually causing it to not sleep?

edit: I wonder if it was because of my GMail and news/weather tickers. Turned refresh to 12 hours instead of 1/2 hour on the ticker and made it so my 5 emails did not sync every second.

Kuriin certainly isn't alone. I mentioned before, my Gnex battery was SHIT. Many others have reported the same. I was lucky to get through a day idle alone with nothing else. With any screen time just for a few minutes, battery would dip 10-15% or more. I'd say I was lucky to ever get 4 hours usage, even on dimmest screen setting. It is possible something could have been running, but this happened even after a full reset and I installed minimal apps. Plain and simple, Verizon version of Gnex battery was always moderate to very poor.

I thought the new Android version was actually called KitKat, not KeyLimePie. That phone clearly shows KeyLimePie. Not saying it is a fake, but found that odd.

Well, KitKat being just cross-promo for the release version, they may still use KLP internally until the final build.

As I remember, Google explained that key lime pie is too obscure a dessert and that Kit Kats were one of the favored snacks among the android team. There have been multiple leaks about the software still calling itself KLP, many figure Google did that to hide the Kit Kat deal.

I bought the Nexus 4 when it came out. Some people might remember from FoH that I said my earpiece is static free... That changed a few months ago when I started hearing pretty loud static sound. It doesn't affect conversations over the phone but I decided to give Google a call to see what they will do while still under warranty. After exchanging a few words, the tech sent me out a new device. It was quite surprising actually.

I rang Google tech support last week because I was having wakelock issues which were causing bad battery drain on my Nexus 4. They sent me a new one without any prompting on my part. Google tech support is surprisingly good.

I now have experience with the shittiness of apple maps. I could see my destination about 100 feet straight ahead of me and maps wanted me to do a u turn and go in the opposite direction. That's just one example from last night.
