I'm trying to justify spending $300 on a Nexus 5 or $350 on a Note 3, as opposed to just getting another Galaxy S4 for $200. I've decided I'm going to stick with my Sprint contract, I just don't want to live without unlimited data. Some months I do only use 2 or 3 GB, but I've had months where I've used 5+GB of data, and I just don't want to have to worry about it.

Does anyone know if carriers will give you an account credit of any kind if you renew your 2-year contract, but DONT get a new subsidized phone from them? I'm trying to figure out if instead of getting a subsidized S4 or Note 3, if I could put my Nexus 5 on my contract that I purchased on my own and offset some of the cost with an account credit.

I'm having trouble justifying an extra $100 for the Nexus 5 over the S4, if I'm sticking with my current carrier anyways.

joe: As long as you don't care about having your data throttled to lower speeds there's plenty of unlimited options.

Yeah, I don't really want to deal with throttling either. We have no wifi in our office at work, so I actually use 4G data 8-10 hours a day M-F, I'd be pretty pissy if I got throttled down to 2G speeds. I also bring my tablet to work with me pretty often and tether off of my phones internet, it's a wifi-only Nexus 7.

They don't give you a damn thing for bringing your own phone, even though that is a total rip off.

Well that blows. Maybe I'll at least take a phone that would be free after subsidy and try to sell it second hand or something. Hell, from the looks of their site I could get an Iphone 4s for free, and then trade it back in for a $147 credit on their buyback service. I could also snag a 5C for $99 and try to sell it second hand. Surely I could get at least $250 for that...

Hmm, a 5C sells for 700-800$ around here and I see it's 500+$ on ebay, guess I can give you 250$ for yours ...

I have never heard of any sort of account credit, but you also shouldn't HAVE to renew your contract and can just go month-to-month. So your $100 will get you a slightly better phone then the S4 (imo) and the flexibility of not being locked into a contract.

The stuff mentioned above is why I'm leaving Sprint myself - unlimited data just ain't worth it to me... especially with the extra cost.

So what are you using so much data at work that you can't do on your desktop? I'm assuming since you mentioned a lack of wifi, it's not a web filter that's getting in your way.

Right, that's my assumption too. Can't do that through your work desktop?

This is the reason I have my music library locally on my phone.

Music and just general jacking around on the internet. Youtube, netflix, etc. Nothing I couldn't live without if I had to, but my Sprint plan with unlimited data is $75 a month, so paying an extra ~$30 a month is worth it to me. My job is REAL boring at times. That $30 is sanity money

edit - our firewall at work blocks a ton of sites. Gmail, youtube, imgur, the old FoH site used to be blocked (only screenshots is here), as well as a few of my favorite sports sites. Thats why I bring my tablet and tether through my phone. My work PC is pretty limited.

So you are willing to pay an extra $540 a year vs T-Mobiles $30 prepaid plan just to ensure you don't get throttled after using 5gbs of data? (Or an extra $360 a year if you need unlimited voice...)

If streaming services are not blocked they are probably frowned upon by his IT dept. We had to block google play because of people pulling 3-5gigs a day streaming shit.

Ah, so wifi wouldn't really help you then. Off topic: I wonder what percentage of work places have such restrictive web filters and if it actually increases productivity.

Yes.

I would hate my job if I couldn't stream music and/or video. I'm often in an office completely by myself, just answering phone calls. I work for my father, but he only works ~20 hours a week anymore, he's semi-retired. I'd go completely insane without access to that stuff.

I still just don't understand. You have a tablet, you could easily load your music and/or download videos to watch without using any data and save so much money. If some months you are only using 2-3gbs it shouldn't be that hard to manage your media consumption just a little bit to ensure that you stay under the 5gbs and still do plenty of streaming.

I mean, I understand paying for convenience but you are talking about paying a 100%-160% premium here for something that could easily be avoided by spending like 30 minutes a week loading media onto your tablet instead of streaming it.

If paying an extra $500 a year for service isn't a big deal I don't see why the extra $100 for a phone would matter to you either, get the phone that you want.

I wish our IT department would do this. Instead they just send the same email 3 times a week asking people not to stream.

Sometimes they do it in ALL CAPS and BOLD for extra useless effect.
