It's taken me around twice as long as the actual run of the show (starting sometime in.. luclin?) but I'm approaching the end of TNG. It was a difficult trek but I've almost made it through.

I would rank the episodes by primary focus thusly:

Well That Was Kind of Cool: Rikker/Worf
Interesting, I Guess: Picard/Data
Fucking Kill Me, I'm Done With This Shit: Troi/Jordy/Wesley/Dr Tits

I now believe Picard is vastly overrated as a Captain and a character. Take a typical Kirk episode - problem happens, Spock lays out the logical solution (and its drawbacks), Bones says something curmudgeony, and then Kirk comes up with his own perfect plan that solves everything and beats up the bad guy and fucks the hot chick.

With Picard on the other hand, the officers discuss the problem, Picard calls Worf an idiot, Data and Jordy come up with the whaargarble nonsense solution, and then Picard says "make it so, number one" and fucks off until the next episode. I don't think he even showed up for filming for entire seasons - it's just the same footage. Picard and Riker are completely redundant in almost every episode.

Worse, there's hardly ever any jokes or even a boob to look at.

I can best sum up TNG as "usually interesting, sometimes clever, often dull, rarely funny or exciting."

Oh, and the Rikker's beard shit is a total lie. There are like, 50 more Troy's mom episodes still to go after he grew that beard.

Ya, watch DS9. The first couple seasons are rough, but once they start the war storyline, the show becomes $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Well yeah, Picard, Riker, and Troy are basically...

Ok, I understand why Picard is there. You need a guy on the bridge with some experience. You'll never know when he'll be useful. You need to make sure the guy who's giving the orders has something back home that you can TAKE from him if he fucks up too badly, like his debauched sex villa in france's wine country. And he can ponder the ethics of stuff while everyone that actually has a job is out committing genocide. I guess Riker is supposed to be his trainee? I dunno. The fuck? "You'll be old soon. Stick with me. I'll show you how to do nothing until we have to assert some author-a-TIE".

And Troy is UTTERLY useless, always. Except when she's doing squats and stretches with Gates in those spandex workout suits. Many good times were had to THOSE scenes.

Basically they could have cut riker and troy from the show entirely and nothing would have changed. Except for Riker reaction gis are some of the best out there. So we wouldn't have that.

I guess they wanted 3 chairs on the bridge. 1 is patriarchal. 2 is ogliarchal. But 3... 3 is the magic number and the magic number is 3. 3 is a democracy!

Except it isn't whatsoever.

That's what the fuck i'm talkin about.

He was both the most worthless and the most awesome.

Maybe rodenberry was digging deep for that one.

Funny, after I posted that I got a really good episode "Pegasus" where Rikker and Picard aren't completely interchangeable for once. Plus, John Locke yo.

I liked Enterprise. I've never seen DS9, and the only Voyager I ever saw damn near made my eyeballs roll right out of their sockets. What I found funny about Enterprise was, okay - Flox and T'Pol are fairly unique, the captain is a total loss, and then you have Tripp and, uh, the ugly british one who seem to do EVERY other job on the ship. Seriously. Pilot, engineer, foot soldier, tactical officer, lady killer, shuttle pilot, transporter technician, janitor - by season 2 you have no idea that one is supposed to be the chief engineer and the other is, uh, chief of security? Those two stayed busy, that's for sure. Those two and Flox were the heart of the show.

As someone that has served Picard was very realistic for a Captain. They make decisions they are not doing the grunt work. Riker was my favorite character. Also the XO (First Officer) is there to exert the Captains policy. In public he is going to be a clone of the captain, behind closed doors is another thing entirely.

Also Babylon 5 was awesome but I cannot get past the horrible CGI these days. Its a shame.

I'm sorry, and I know I'll get endless hate for it, but TOS>>>>TNG. Every character on TOS was interesting, unique, and actually served a purpose. Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Chekov, Sulu, and even Uhura-- all interesting characters imho. The episodes were also almost always about discovering the unknown and meeting new species, and it never felt like a soap opera.

Then we've got TNG trying to be the progressive, politically correct sci-fi series of the '90's. A spaceship with a fucking children's nursery on board. A geriatric captain that almost never goes on away missions and is always looking for the peaceful solution even while his ship is getting fired on. A disabled black engineer for some 24th century affirmative action, a fucking android that wants to be more human, a god damned therapist on the bridge, a boring ass personality-free doctor, and a Klingon trying to fit in. Da Fuq? I don't care if Picard behaved more like a "real captain" (by our military standards), Kirk got his hands dirty and that simply makes him far more if a likeable character. Plus he banged the chicas and would be at warp 5 before they could even ask for his number.

The best character ever though imho is The Doctor from Voyager. . I think the episode where he has to take back that futuristic Federation ship that's been captured by the Romulans with the help of the other holodoc is one of the best ever.

The doctor was the only good thing about voyager.

And yes, I am counting both of Jeri Ryan's contributions.

I dunno, I still place Voyager above TNG simply because of the subject matter, and if not then because the Doctor+7of9 was more interesting than all the TNG characters combined. The fact that they were stranded on the other end of the galaxy, constantly trying to fight for survival/resources with no help, and essentially being brought back to an "explore" type mission rather than a TNG style planetary babysitting one. Janeway was the main thing that dragged Voyager into mediocrity imho. Couldn't stand the wench. Even the "bad" characters were better. Neelix was annoying but was still better than fucking Wesley.

Jean-Luc Picard, the great administrator.

He does great when he gets to be a badass but it's just so rare.

Kirk was a cowboy.

There's a photo somewhere with them wearing their phasers low slung like gun slingers but I can't find it.

TNG would have been a lot better if Patrick Stewart was playing his character from Masterminds, hell they could replace Wesley with Ozzie while they're at it.

DS9 was the only "realistic" Trek. Humans are still humans, regardless as to what advances society has made. Quark summed it up best in one episode when he told Nog that humans are some of the nicest, warmest people so long as their bellies are full and they are comfortable/secure, but take that away and subject them to constant stress/danger, then they are more ruthless than the most bloodthirsty Klingon.

DS9 also has the episode "In the pale moonlight", probably one of the best Trek episodes of any Trek series of all time.

Babylon 5.
Since you brought it up, what I'd really like to see is Bab 5 get the TNG remaster treatment. The CG in Babylon 5 is fucking horrendous, but the story and characters are great. Update that shit for like fifty bucks, because seriously, it's so bad even fifty dollars spent on new CG would be an improvement, and reissue that fucker post haste.
