Ya, pretty much lol. Although DS9 was more blatant and pretty much confirmed what people already suspected: Most people used the Holodeck for sex or violence (or both if they were Klingons).

Man, why didn't I subscribe to this thread ages ago? I love ST. Here are some of my thoughts on the recent comments on the shows:

TOS: Never watched it, but loved the movies. I always thought the TV series was second rate until a few years ago when I started hearing and reading more and more about how awesome they were. The recent comments in this thread have made my mind up to watch them this summer (once I've finished all the good X-files episodes). With regards to the films, I love them all, even the "bad" ones, though I do think Generations is the least of them.

TNG: I grew up with this, and they are also the only series I have re-watched (twice) and own the DVDs to. I loved (almost) all the characters. I still think Picard is awesome, and I still quote him and follow his mannerisms to this day. Riker is the comedy relief mostly. I loved Data's quest for humanity, prolly one of the few "plots" that went through the whole series, though his brother was annoying. Tasha was an annoying wench, god I was glad when she bought it and Worf came in. Wesley, yeah I see why most hate him, while I don't love him, I do see the point to his character, someone who youngsters can try and aspire to be (though if it worked or not, god knows). Many great characters (O'Brien, Q and that archaeologist girlfriend of Picard's) and episodes (too many to list, but Darmok, and that episode where Picard lives a full life while trapped in some alien statis field come to mind).

DS9: The show was promising at first, but quickly went downhill - up until the start of the war. Honestly, I had all but given up watching it on TV back in the day until I watched a couple of the early war episodes and was drawn back in. Though I love Picard, Sisco is probably one of the best commanders (will reserve judgement for Kirk until after I've watch TOS), though I never liked his whiny kid. Odo was awesome. Loved him and his bucket. As was Quark. Quark probably made the series, and the episodes with his mother and the Ferengi leader are just pure gold. Then there's Garak, man, Garak is just the best. And then there is (or are?) the Daxes, the hot babes of the show. Loved them (as in I wanked my teenaged dick to them). The not so hot characters were mainly the doctor (at least at first) since he was just too much of a do goody know it all and Kira who was too angry and too religious, though to be honest, she did grow on me towards the end. Haven't watched this since it ended on TV, but I have to watch it all again.

Voyager: Mixed feelings for this one. As others here say, probably one of the best premises for a show: hurled out to the ass end of the galaxy and have to make your way back. No going back home to port if you get beat up bad, and they did do a good job of making decent episodes, but many of the characters pissed me off. Janeway had her good and bad days. The doctor was mostly awesome, though towards the end he had started to lose the awesomenes and started to become annoying. Never much liked Torres. Paris and Tuvok were ok in their own ways. Nelix... well... Nelix was pretty good but I fucking hated his voice. Chakotey... he was ok. 7of9... well, she did her job perfectly (read: she kept my teenage ass watching). I have no idea if she was a good actress or not lol.

Enterprise: Watched the first couple of episodes but for me it just wasn't Star Trek for some reason. I don't know why. (Anyone else have this feeling?) It just never clicked with me. Not much else to say.

B5: (OK, not ST, but everyone else is talking about it). Loved this show, though the 5th series was a bit dull. Lots of very interesting characters and character development (G'kar?) and ideas (Techno-mages). But probably the best thing this show did for Star Wars was to force DS9 to compete by introducing a steady multi-series plot instead of endless Monster of the Week episodes.

As for a future ST: Could it work? Don't know. Enterprise didn't work for me, though as I say, I don't really know why. It seemed to have everything. Maybe I'm just old and like my vintage ST? The new films are ... well ... They're good sci-fi flicks, but are they ST? Not sure to be honest. They seem more about the action than the adventure, if you know what I mean. If they do make a future ST TV series, I would watch it (at least the first few episodes), it might be good, it might be bad. Don't really know.

One thing's for sure though, I'm definatly going to watch the old films, TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager (maybe even Enterprise) again soon (by soon I mean once I loose my job, retire, win the lottery or find some more spare time).

I'm pretty sure I've watched each of them (outside TOS) at least twice. Think I'm going to do so again.

TNG isn't my favorite Star Trek series, or even a series that has many episodes I want to rewatch. But here are a few episodes I do occasionally watch if I'm in the mood for TV.

Picard.Kinda a douche early on, grows into the "Picard speech" by the end of the series. Like mentioned earlier in the thread he's often a prop but occasionally Stewart gets to put his acting hat on.
Best Picard Speech:"The First Duty"
Stewart gets to act:"Chain of Command, Part II", "Sarek", "The Inner Light", "Darmok", "Family", "The Drumhead"
Action picard:"Starship Mine"

Riker. Pretty much a douche through the whole show, which is why he's fun to watch at times. He often can be observed tormenting his subordinates or being tortured by the writers.
Riker in action:"Best of Both Worlds", "The Pegasus", "Schisms", "Frame of Mind", "Chain of Command Part 1"

La Forge. He got some pretty cringe worthy episodes throughout the run. Most of his dialogue is incoherent technobabble. He eventually marries Data later in the series.
Non-cringe worthy La forge:"The Next Phase", "Interface"

Yar/Sela. Bailed after season one. Can't really blame here, the character was given loads of dumb shit to say. Was able to come back for a couple decent episodes later in the series.
Character redemption:"Yesterday's Enterprise"

Worf.TNG Klingon's are space retards. I know it's just a silly TV show but in the context of TNG/DS9/VOY it's hard to believe the first the first Klingon to build a space ship wasn't beaten to death and/or sexually violated for not being a warrior and then his/her ship broken down to make an oven for cooking their space dogs. Don't get me wrong, I like Michael Dorn, and I can't blame him for wanting to pull a steady paycheck for so long. But his character got shit on from beginning to end by the writing staff. He goes from eating the furniture in Season one TNG to being a whiny teenage girl by the end of DS9. The only Klingon in the entirety of this era of trek that has any redeeming value is Martok, but he's not in TNG.
If you must:"Sins of the Father", "Redemtion I & II"

Beverly Crusher.Women in the series are usually approached in an archaic or cliche fashion and Crusher is the prime example. Rumor was McFadden was being sexually harassed by one of the producers and left the show after the first season and only returned after he left. Even after that she doesn't get many good episodes.
Passable Crusher:"Remember Me" "Descent Part II" ("B" plot)

Troi.Same as Crusher. She gets to be Captain obvious throughout the series and probably could've been replaced by a parrot.
Passable Troi:"The Masterpiece Society" "Face of the Enemy"

Data. Gets some good episodes later on but he's pretty unbearable early in the series.
Entertaining Data:"The Measure of a Man", "Brothers"("A" plot only), "The Offspring"

Acting Ensign Wesley Crusher. I'm not going to go on about this annoying character, but there are a few episodes that aren't complete shit.
Passable Wesley:"Final Mission", "The First Duty", "The Game"

Pulaski. No redeeming factors. Her writers/creators hated women.

Q.Mostly there to annoy people. Watching the these episodes is a guilty pleasure.
"Deja Q", "Qpid"

Barclay. Howlin' Mad in space. Gets better episodes than most of the regulars.
Crazytown:"Hollow Puruits", "The Nth Degree"

Ro.Probably the only female lead in the series that doesn't exist only to be a romantic interest for one of the other main characters.
Angry Ro:"Ensign Ro" "The Next Phase" "Preemptive Strike"

Other/Ensemble Good Episodes:

"Disaster" "Cause and Effect" "Unification 1 & 2", "Relics" "Lower Decks" "Timescape" "The Chase" "Power Play" "Emergence"

WTF:"Masks"

General things to avoid/annoyances:Lauxana Troi, Alexander Rozhenko, Ferengi Episodes, Klingon Episodes.

Worst of Trek:
Torment yourself and friends with these episodes.
"The Outrageous Okana" - This might be the worst episode of television in existence.
"A Fistful of Datas"
"Rascals"

Gambit should really be on the watch list, too. Birthright is a good arc for Worf and Data as well. I'd also argue that Genesis is probably the worst damn episode out there and should be avoided at all costs.

Genesis, How could I forget that masterpiece. The Science part of Star Treks Science Fiction is often pretty weak but in this case of "Genesis" just started making shit up. I have to admit I would watch it again because it's pretty funny and the Barclay spider is pretty sweet. Also I think this is the episode that predicts neurotics like Barclay self diagnosing themselves on the interwebs.

Aaron, I will tell you this about TOS. It is laughable to watch today unless you keep in mind the era when it first aired, 1966-69. Some of the stuff (a black woman and asian man on the bridge as main characters) was almost unheard of at the time. TOS paved the way for a multicultural society. Some of the episodes are horrendous, but that doesn't make them or the message they conveyed any less relevant. If you keep the time period when this show existed in mind, I think you will enjoy them more. Netflix has the episodes with the more modern CG graphics for the ships and space stuff, which makes them much more watchable. Plus, TOS has some of the best characters ever. Kirk, who kicked every ass and banged every alien, but loved his ship and crew as only a real captain can. Spock, who is the father of modern logic and rationalism, but who is also torn between what he wishes he was and what he actually is. It's really fun to watch him in TOS and then the movies to really see the long evolution of the character that Nimoy created. He's joking and swearing and 'exaggerating' by the sixth movie and I think that's awesome. Bones, I mean, shit, what can you say about Bones? A bulldog of a doctor and an amazing hammy actor.

But while i'm writing my nerd manifesto, I'll do other Trek characters as well.

Picard - Renaissance man, truly. Versed in letters and even a bit of combat when needed, but he exemplified the idea of a captain. Above the fray, almost cold, unless you knew him, but a man to make decisions, even hard ones, as needed. I always loved his character.

Riker - A great number two. And by that I mean shit. Nah, I liked Riker. He served his purpose well and once he got the beard and that walking-at-a-lean swagger showed up, he came into his own.

Data- the consummate Pinocchio. His quest to become more human allowed the show to delve into what humanity means and provided some needed deus ex machina as well as comic relief.

Troi- butt fucking useless and ugly to boot

Crusher- annoying, butt useless, spawed wesley and blue balled picard. Also, sub rosa. Fuck that bitch.

Worf- great concept, well played character, but always got his ass kicked, kind of negating the whole warrior thing

Pulaski - I actually liked her. They were trying to make the opposite of Crusher and basically wrote a female McCoy. I agree it didn't work too well within the framework of TNG, but I liked her.

Barclay- 90% of us on a starship. Plus howlin mad murdock. Love Dwight Schulz.

Sisko- great character, gave him some good backstory and a really good character arc.

Odo - awesome. the end.

Quark - the showrunners stated several times that Quark and Rom were basically the way they saw 20th century humanity. Surprisingly deep once the show got going and even the Ferengi brothers learned some federation values in their time on DS9

Garak - probably one of my favorite trek characters ever. Wanted so badly to go home until he saw what that would cost him and what going home would actually feel like. Still able to dance with the devil In the Pale Moonlight. Great.

And I am going to do a shout out to one of the unsung heroes on Star Trek. The man who, if Enterprise had gotten another season, would have finally arrived at main character status, the man who played nine different characters from at least two ferengi on DS9 to Voyager to an Andorian on Enterprise. The underrated and always awesome Jeffrey Combs.

Janeway and the Doctor were the only redeeming characters and frankly things about Voyager. One of the things that pissed me off about that show is even though they were stranded halfway across the universe, far from any spacedock, they somehow managed to get half their ship blown up in one episode, and the next, it was as pristine as when it left Utopia Planetia. Ugh.

Enterprise was finally finding its feet after the abortion that was the temporal cold war, and did have some cool stories about early Starfleet days and the birth of the Federation. Had they focused on that instead of useless shit like Tucker getting preggers, I think they'd have gotten seven seasons.

But as the man says, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. Now to head over to SS for some Fedor fatty hating and dick swingin.

"I, Borg" should be in the somewhere. Maybe under Picard.

One thing you will notice -- those are some short-ass skirts. Really, TOS has some absolutely beautiful women with some of the wildest outfits.

I'm really loving this thread now.

I have to say I'm with Pysek on Picard. Sure, from an acting point of view he didn't get to shine a lot, but the character is one I admire.

Barclay: How could I forget Barclay? Well, I have a confession to make, while I watched and loved the A-Team back when I was a child I never realised Barclay was played by Schultz until a few years ago. After that he ceased to be a whiny character that I hated and became awesome.

As for what Pysec says about TOS, I am a historian, so that doesn't trouble me. In fact I love reading golden age sci-fi (Asimov, Heinlein etc) especially with the history in mind (Stranger in a Strange Land is amazing to read from the point of view of it's publish date). So I think I'll do fine with that regard. And after posting those pics of the ladies... I think I'm going to start watching this weekend! Giggity-giggity...

Talking about history, I love how history is reflected in the series and films, for example how the Klingons with their red motif become friends with the Federation after their moon blows up, shortly after Chernobyl and the fall of the USSR (coincidence? I think not!). It's also interesting to see how TNG changes and becomes darker after Roddenberry's death, and also how B5 influenced DS9. One possible reason why Enterprise failed might be that it's a post 9/11 show, and looking back there is a divide between the way the future is perceived between the 90's and 00's. I think the open "boldly go" nature of the ST universe was one of the casualties of that tragedy.

Sigh... why don't we have shows like this any more? Well... to be honest the re-imagined BSG was pretty damn good for a sci-fi series, but it's defiantly a post 9/11 show.

You have to go British.

The new Dr. Who is one of the most relentlessly optimistic sci-fi faery tales since...

Well, since Roddenberry.

America is just going through a bit of an introspective angst cycle. Maybe even deserved. These things do happen.

Just watched the TOS pilot... The only two actors I recognised were Nimoy and Roddenberry's wife. Not sure if want... Thank god they changed the actor group (except for Spock).

Roddenberry actually told a funny story about that. When NBC got the pilot for Trek, they had a couple of complaints. One, that the show was too cerebral and that audiences wouldn't 'get it'. So he was told to make it more actiony. Jeffrey Hunter, who played the captain, apparently had a nagging wife and she made him bail, so they recast the captain with Shatner. And NBC hated a strong woman as Number One and hated the 'devil' character of Spock. According to Roddenberry, he made them keep one character and he married the other. As he said, it would have been odd for him to marry Nimoy. Also, he did manage to get his pilot in front of audiences, as the two-part episode "The Menagerie". I actually liked the pilot, the only thing that creeped me out was Spock smiling. They hadn't settled on Vulcan culture as emotionless and logical yet and so Spock emoted all over the place and it weirds me out to this day.

Also, good catch on the Russian connection. Nimoy said as much in interviews about the Klingons and Praxis blowing up in Trek VI.

Yeah, I keep thinking that the 90's were the last decade. God I love the 90's! Anyway, watched a few episodes and Kirk has started to kick ass, still hasn't gotten the girl yet. They also haven't started with the red shirts yet. It's strange seeing the very first episodes before things started to settle and routine set in.
