from a rewatchability standpoint, i would much rather rewatch episodes 2 and 3 than Rogue One. for all their flaws those movies have engaging characters and sweet light saber action. only thing i would care to see again from Rogue One is the 15 seconds of Vader.

Yeah. I'm not talking about one of the Hutts having his henchmen smash a guys toes off with a hammer though, more just the premise with a context that allows a bad guy to become someone whose success you can get behind. A bad deed goes south and the guy gets screwed over and goes bounty hunting for his kind of people on his own dime. John Wick without the puppy.
With Rogue One, and arguably TFA, Disney has shown they are willing to somber up the franchise. There's definitely ways to do seedier stories like that while keeping it light enough for the kids without killing the merchandise machine.
Me and all by buddies at school knew his name long before it was ever spoken in RoTJ. But we were kids who had a lot of the toys, bought the trading cards, etc.
Oh I had a bunch of toys, all from the Empire/ROTJ era. I don't recall catching Boba Fett's name for a while. Likely learned it through a buddy. I was very little so that played a part.

really? out of the good 4? let's start the rankings then, movies in chronological timeline order
I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Rogue One (2016)
IV – A New Hope (1977)
V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
VII – The Force Awakens (2015)

my order would be:
V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
VII – The Force Awakens (2015)
IV – A New Hope (1977)
Rogue One (2016)
VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
prequel shitty shit 1/2/3
Empire
A New Hope
Return of the Jedi
Rogue One
The Force Awakens
---shit tier
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
Phantom Menace

I am still digesting R1, maybe it can beat out ANH for 3rd spot
Same, not sure if Rogue One will stay above TFA. Time will tell.

Just saw a youtube video on the CGI characters, and I had the wrong idea from reading what you guys were saying. Yall were making it out as if the characters were 100% CGI. They had actual actors in there who looked very similar to the originals and just used CGI instead of makeup to finish the look.

Maybe the stand-ins were bad actors.

I assume Warwick Davis was the awesome midget alien from Saw's gang?

Hah, and Tarkin's voice actor from Rebels did the VO for the Mon Calamari Admiral.

TFA has only a few rewatchable parts for me when I see it on the movie channels, but since you usually never catch a movie at the beginning I could see tuning in to Rogue One and watching the 2nd and 3rd acts.

Disney actually made a clarification for Rebels from a Rogue One reference. "General Syndulla" over the intercom is actually referring to Hera rather than her father, confirming that she and at least some of the Ghost crew will live to see ANH.

Went in for a second viewing. First third was worse and I dozed off a couple times. It wasn't until after the Kyber refinery that it held my attention enough to stay awake. Paid more attention to Tarkin and the CGI. For 90% of his screen time he looks great. Then he moves around someone or looks somewhere and it gets all fucky. Leia was still not good. The music for me was even worse this time around.

Final verdict, I still enjoy the 'story' of Rogue One, but it's execution fell short, and it pains me to say it being a huge Star Ward fanboy. Is there going to be a novelization of the movie? I'd be curious to see what is different.

Most of it up until the end is simply boring. That's its biggest flaw. People have some legitimate gripes with TFA but it kept the pace moving and engaging and was generally entertaining throughout. This was simply dull up until the final act that everyone loves. I wanted to like this as much as any SW freak, but it was mostly just a slog outside of the finale and the skirmish in the city with the stormtroopers when they first meet blindy ninja and the howitzer dude.

I'm not saying it should be nonstop action, but trying to take on a dramatic tone just bogs a SW movie down. Its almost as bad as the awful political shit that was shoehorned into the prequels. SW is generally best when its a lighter hearted simplistic space monk serial film. Trying to mash this pseudo gritty war approach together with all the tropey fan service fell flat on its face.

For me personally I just find it lacking sorely when there's no lightsabers/jedi content at all. Xwings and space battles are great and all but its nice to have it broken up with the space samurai and their flashy sword fights as well.

I saw the movie this weekend. Loved it. Right afterwards I went home and watched ANH. Rogue One for me was everything I was hoping for. Awesome space battle check. Darth Vader acting like a bad ass check. Gritty tragic ending check. If I had to make my list right now.

Empire Strikes Back
Rogue One
A New Hope
The Force Awakens

Putting Rogue One in front of A New Hope is a tough call. ANH is the movie that started it all. Ground breaking blockbuster movie that put the big CGI summer blockbuster movie on the map. I saw it as a kid in the drivin movie theater. I remember riding home in the car from it think why the fuck are we all not driving around in land speeders. It was such an incredible new world experience to the star wars galaxy. That being said watching it right after Rogue One it seemed a bit campy. It was still good but the characters some how seem to innocent now.

For me Rogue One also makes the stories for ANH and TFA better. The reason was always there but Rogue One really drives home the point that the leaders of the empire plan has always been to create a super weapon that they will use to force everyone to surrender too and they have absolutely no qualms about using it, no MAD going on around here. The ending to TFA kinda bothered me before in been there done that kind of way. Why the fuck are these guys building another planet killer only to have it destroyed again. Not anymore, That's their plan. They're Nazis determined to put the whole galaxy under their thumb. Now I feel that after watching Rogue One.

I really have to question anyones taste that would put this mediocre movie above any of the OT. Man, they even got the fucking music wrong. How hard is that in Star fucking Wars?

We've all watched the originals 100's of times, how many fucking times can you sit through Force Awakens? This movie will end up just like that. An afterthought that you might catch if its on a movie channel. You certainly aren't watching it 100 times.

it would make more sense to you if everyone posted a picture of their neck along with their feedback on the movie. that way you would understand the levels of neckbeard you are dealing with.

I have to agree to some extent. I think it was a great movie and worthy to be a part of the franchise but this movie starts out on the wrong foot and takes close to a hour to redeem itself. Certainly everyone is entitled to their own opinions but if there's any take away from all of the opinions this movie's last hour was incredibly strong to make up for their mishaps to begin with... If they could have gotten the first 30 minutes right including the music and title text, this could have easily been in the top 3-5. However, it was in dire need of redemption but I will say the last hour delivered.

Again, i'm wondering if the writer and directors created this disjointing beginning intentionally due to the infancy of the formal rebellion so this was about all the chips falling into place or did they just not know how to start the movie.

I am concerned every spin-off will begin this way which makes me less likely to rush out and see them. I'm not really looking forward to Han Solo but would like to see an Obiwan movie.

I would like to see an Obi Wan and Anakin movie that takes place in the period between episodes 2 and 3.

I can't wait until we get a Captain Cassian Andor spinoff. I mean what kid isn't going to grow up wishing he was this red shirt?!

Better than the OT, gtfo. This isn't even better than fucking Jedi. At least that movie was the first time you've seen some guy shoot lightning bolts out of his fucking fingers. (oh and they managed to not fuck up a Star Wars score, go figure)

I liked Rogue One a lot, but also don't understand how any sensible person could rank it above the OT. Even above Jedi is a stretch. ANH and ESB are perfect Star Wars films. RotJ is 3/4s a great Star Wars film. This was an admirable and enjoyable effort, but it's not in the same category.

I'm well beyond hoping for something to match the impact of the OT. No matter what they do, it's simply not possible, just like another Everquest-type experience is not possible.

Anyway, ESB > ANH > RotJ > RO > TFA > 3 > 2 > 1

Agree with this. It's tough because people slammed TFA for being too much fan service and not original enough, but now are slamming this for not being close enough in tone to Star Wars.

I enjoyed it. I will watch it again when it hits DVD but I wont go out of my way to watch it over and over. But as I said earlier, I don't do that with anything anymore. The bigger question is: will kids or people with extraordinary amounts of downtime put this movie on loop? I don't know but I'm not sure they'd rewatch the OT a million times either. Put me in the camp of glad they'll keep making SW movies. I was happy enough with TFA and this one was enjoyable but not great. /shrug

EDIT: I'm not saying people are wrong for feeling that way, TFA isn't original enough, and R1's tone is off, but I think it will be hard to overcome.

I'd rank this below everything but the Lucas prequels. I don't see ranking anything above the OT, even Jedi, but I'd put TFA at fourth over this. It was "just ok", it had some moments, but it dragged badly in too much of the first half or more. I found myself waiting for the next funny line from K2SO and the inevitable finale while the story plodded along tediously. Even the end battle had some shitty aspects, the entire mess with plugging in the switch and flipping the switch was weak and annoying as hell to me.

Look at it in terms of quotable lines. "I am one with the force, and the force is with me." "Congratulations, you're being rescued."

RO is far and away not my favorite SW movie, but it's not an Episode of SW, either. The Clone Wars and Rebels were both boring as fuck for me. At least this movie has insanely memorable characters. K2 is probably my favorite character of all time now. And I want an entire backstory movie of the blind guy... it's a filler movie, which is exactly what it was intended to be. Which is why there was no title scroll.

And I was more sad when K2 meets his end than I was about Mads Mikkelsen's character... that's not Mad's fault, just the relationship between him and his daughter was so distanced as to be nearly insignificant. We got a whole bunch of screen time building up the comradery between the main characters and K2 (and the gang).
