I really have to question anyones taste that would put this mediocre movie above any of the OT. Man, they even got the fucking music wrong. How hard is that in Star fucking Wars?

We've all watched the originals 100's of times, how many fucking times can you sit through Force Awakens? This movie will end up just like that. An afterthought that you might catch if its on a movie channel. You certainly aren't watching it 100 times.

Holst only wrote so much material, man.

Just saw a youtube video on the CGI characters, and I had the wrong idea from reading what you guys were saying. Yall were making it out as if the characters were 100% CGI. They had actual actors in there who looked very similar to the originals and just used CGI instead of makeup to finish the look.
It's not a great vid on its own but explains it well enough.

dunno if it's the same one

Anyone who puts this even in the same category as the OT should kill themselves. If you put it above any of the OT, take your family with you. Seriously, you're a fucking idiot. And it's not just nostalgia, the OT are all fantastic movies that get everything right that every movie since has gotten wrong. It was a great story, filled with interesting characters, augmented by great music and special effects. Everything since is CGI, more CGI, over extra CGI, and the plot and character development is an afterthought.

Even ROTJ, which gets the most flak of the OT was a solid movie. Yes, it had Ewoks which sucked, but it also had the battle at Jabba's Palace, the speeder bike chase, the final confrontation between Luke and Vader along with the Emperor, and by far the best space battle of any Star Wars movie ever made. RO is better than ROTJ? Fuck you!

If you don't have John Williams composing your score not very it seems.

Make no mistake I didn't care for the score very much. It wasn't bad per se it was just "there". It wasn't memorable and it didn't do anything to connect you emotionally into any of the scenes as they unfolded (and to be honest, there are many times in the OT where Williams' score is doing 90% of the heavy lifting on that front). Much of it sounded like a generic "Hollywood epic" score.

But at this point all we can say is the score is more a casualty of the reshoots than anything else. Michael Giacchino had four weeks to score it after Desplat was forced to bow out because the reshoots pushed the final edit out so far that it conflicted with other obligations he had. And Giacchino is good. He's scored a lot of big movies and has won an Oscar doing so but 4 weeks to do a job that typically takes several months (Williams started working on the Ep 8 score over two months ago for example and that doesn't come out until next December) is a big ask. He'll likely get another crack at it and we'll see if it was more of a time factor or if he's just not the right guy to take up Williams' mantle after he walks away for good.

Which will be soon. TFA was supposed to be his last Star Wars score but he liked Rey as a character so much he wanted to come back and at least do Ep 8 and he may even stick around for 9 as well, if he's up to it. Fans can at least thank TFA for that. When he's gone some people are gonna realize just how rare of a talent that man is.

I'll get right on that. You've got a really solid rep as far as movies go...

p.s. this is above 1 of the OT

Sure.

But R1 is probably still in the top 3 or even top 2 star wars prequels.

Shares some off-key CGI and taking itself to serious and most other flaws with Lucas's 2000s outings, but the colour palette is much easier on the eyes. On the other hand, some of the acting does make Hayden Christian look talented in retrospect and there's no Darth Maul-equivalent as far as new interesting additions to the universe go.

I don't agree that Rogue One is better than the original trilogy by any means, though I see how someone else might. Movies and television have vastly improved. That's why millennials like the prequels better than "that outdated shit" no matter how retarded that sounds.

The other thing to remember is what was new and awesome in the late 70s and early 80s has been rehashed and redone in countless movies since then, so by the time younger generations see it, they wonder what the big deal is. Obi Wan and Vader's saber fight from the original movie can come across as pretty snooze worthy when you compare it against all the force-ninja stuff that has come since then.

They key is to get kids to watch the stuff as young as possible, that way they are less critical of the flaws. Although it seemed like ROTJ was 1000x easier to get kids to sit through, since it had all the Jaba and Ewok stuff.

Yes, and just as important to remember is that the movie experience in general was vastly different then. Almost no one had a VCR or cable TV. The Web didn't exist. Watching a movie like Star Wars was truly an event. You'd be immersed in the memory of the experience for months afterwards.

I remember when ANH was broadcast on network TV for the first time (84ish?). I can still recall my parents and their friends talking about it in anticipation as well as their excitement when a commercial came on, and Darth Vader's mask overtook the entire screen. Most of them hadn't had the ability to view it for years. My family and I settled in to watch it on our circa 1975 19" Sony with "stereo" sound courtesy of two speakers that were each the size of of a nickel. It was amazing. And I wasn't able to watch it again for another two years, after we'd finally bought a VCR.

Now the average person can instantly call up thousands of movies at their leisure while taking a shit in a random Burger King bathroom, and then broadcast their complaints to weirdos on the internet in real time. There's just too much media overload today for a movie to have an impact like Star Wars did ever again.

Thats why I've attempted to make my consumption of media as difficult as possible. Only Vinyl, for music and laser disk for movies.

8 tracks only for music or you're going to get soft.

I thought about my rankings last night, I'd put them like this
ANH - It's good and it was the one that started the entire thing.
R1 - Literally no flaws other than that I didn't like anything about che guerrera or any scene he was in.
Empire - Below R1 mainly because luke is a whiny bitch. I fucking hate that scene of him crying like a bitch during the fight with vader.
Jedi - The beginning was ultra badass. Movie got weak when we got to the ewoks
TFA - Something was just off about it. The science fuckups really mess with my enjoyment of the movie. It's likely that some day I'll rank TFA above jedi, but probably not until more movies come out that expand on some of the threads they left hanging.

Revenge
Phantom
Attack

Note that I liked the lucas prequels, but they all had too much stupid shit. They could easily be edited into 1 or 2 movies that might rank above ANH. When I watch them at home, at least I can skip ignorant shit like pod races and the love story. Unfortunately, you can't really skip jarjar.

Earlier in the thread, someone pointed out that the character Jyn was the only one with an option for a second movie. They took that as evidence that they were considering letting her survive, but last night I heard she might show up in one of the other standalones. Anyone heard any credible rumors along those lines?

I'm perturbed by you ranking Phantom Menace above the other two prequels.
