can you summarise all the interesting stuff from the book please. I've downloaded it but really don't feel like reading it just for the deleted scenes and extra backstory
1) Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren know Darth Vader's secret
2) There's someone important on that Republic Senate balcony
3) Thank C-3PO for the Resistance's timely arrival at Maz Kanata's castle
4) Leia kept a big-and ultimately vital-secret from Han
5) Kylo doesn't feel so great after killing Han
6) The Resistance is tiny
7) Rey doesn't just beat Kylo-she also beats the dark side
8) Kylo recognizes Rey
9) Rey and Poe do meet-awkwardly
10) BB-8's map triggers R2-D2's awakening
Ok, tossing my 2 cents in here now that I've actually seen this thing.
If it was NOT star wars, 7/10. Since it is a sequel to one of the, if not the, biggest film franchise in history, I feel its a stretch going 5/10.
Its not that, its that he was raised in agoge basically, trained to be a killing machine. But the first fire fight, dude puts bloody hand on his helmet and it shatters his world. Then juxtapose this, and other acts of cowardice, with him going face to face with Kylo or whatever . . . yeah, no.
Here is my personal nit picking, to add in with everyone else's.
Why is salvage worth 1/4 a meal, but flying a car is free?
Hero chick is ungainly. And remarkably pale for someone living in the desert.
Do storm troopers not have the tech to see droids rolling across the night away from a combat area?
Really? Nobody knows what he did with the map? Where is his astro tech droid? And wtf, the most important intel in the galaxy is at stake, "yeah, send 24 guys, we have billions, but 24 should work. No worries."
Emo Vader didn't think to force hand face question him on the planet? You know, the night before. Again, only the most vital intel in the galaxy.
There goes black man having a change of heart cause reasons! Best fighter pilot in the resistance? Yeah, don't have people guard him.
TIE fighter, notoriously fragile, takes out a whole hangar bay? Then breaks out, and never gets hit by any patrols or one of dozens of turbo lasers?
TIE fighter obviously updated, but they kept the credit crappy original solar panels? Ok
TIE fighter goes Mario cart classic reverse rubber banding and impossibly out runs other TIE fighters (they land, and Fuck around with no hostile units in pursuit?)
Ball droid sad. This chicks forehead.
Most important shit in galaxy, send two storm troopers!
Why are the pursuit TIE fighters hours behind their quarry?
TIE fighter chasing you? No biggie, out run it on foot!
One minute she can't keep the falcon upright, the next, time to chat while flying better than Han. Yeah, fucking that was dumb. Did she just immelman (sp?) The falcon?
Dude slicing up the console is the only decent scene so far.
Thank God Harrison Ford showed up.
Mouth monster instantly kills everyone but black dude.
Chick obviously stand off ish, but loves the storm trooper gone good instantly.
She might have downs.
Old woman bar keep yoda is neat.
Jedi chick looks like agent Smith.
Han and Chewie been together how many decades and he never shot a bow caster?
Ten Minutes ago, black dude was ready to bail, then, "Raaaaaayuyyyy!!!!". Lol
Starving didn't wake up the force. Several luge our death fights didn't. Five pushed into a tree 30ft up didn't. But when needed for the plot...
Droids going captain planet to combine maps was gay.
Chewies life debt xferd to Jedi chick?
She held that light saber out for a long time.
I like how Rod138 summed it up, but my two words for this movie would be: Hollow / Soulless.
The whole thing just felt empty as fuck. As a stand along space western not tied to Star Wars, it would have been nice. But fuck, ppl have been wanting a decent star wars movie for decades and the substance never gets delivered.
Also, I passed out and some nerd woke me up cause I was snoring too loud. So I missed about 20 minutes.
The only 2 things from it that I actually liked, old woman barkeep yoda thing, and Han. Other than that, it was as expected.
Isn't that pretty common knowledge tho, Anakin turned and became Vader. Maybe there was some revisionist History written 25 years later, but I doubt it.

I didnt read the article, but the novel definitely has Snoke and Ren talking about Vader's weakness being the turning point that caused the fall of the Empire.
There's a lot more than those ten actually.
I mentioned earlier that since the parts of the book that WERE in the movie were like 1-to-1 identically lifted from the screenplay, you're left to think that the parts that were left out must've been cut from the film that the Author saw.... and I'd say that's like 40+ mins of extra footage tbh. Maybe more.
They have whole cast members who only get like 2 scenes in the movie that are around quite a bit. The Blarina that Warwick Davis plays (midget who played Willow) interacts with Poe Dameron and helps him escape Jakku. I didn't think they'd filmed that but then the actress who plays Korr Sella turns out to be in the movie in full costume just to die on Hosnian so yeah they prolly filmed all the Poe shit and just cut it out too.
I still want a Jedi or Force user that uses dark side shit but isn't evil, a la KOTOR. Would be great to see some sort of shock trooper type dude just walk into an army and wreck everyone a million different ways. Maybe Luke will go-off before eventually dying in Episode 9.

The secret is Vader turned against the empire at the end, he turned light at the last moment and killed the Emp over his son.
"Such a foolish error of judgment. A momentary lapse in an otherwise exemplary life. Had Lord Vader not succumbed to emotion at the crucial moment-had the father killed the son-the Empire would have prevailed. And there would be no threat of Skywalker's return today.""
the secret thing is that vader turned to the light in his final moments and killed the emperor.
Vader is basically a martyr to these people, dark lord of the sith that all these grunts inspire to be. The Ultimate bad, the one to emulate, perfect in his evilness.
That's why emo vader is all crying about worrying about falling to the lightside, it's why he teenage angst smashes shit all the time to convince himself he's bad and it's why he kills Han.
btw I haven't read any of the extra shit from the novelization or from websites trying to explain shit. If it's important to be in the movie thatshit should be in the fucking movie. I don't judge a film based on extraneous background info that they forgot to include. With all that being said, half the shit on that list you learn from just watching the movie. "new" information in bold:
1) Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren know Darth Vader's secret: no shit, this was in the movie. 2) There's someone important on that Republic Senate balconyThere was a republic senate balcony? and wait, if the Republic Senate matters at all, then aren't all of them important? Oh that split second of screen time for that hot black chick before her planet was vaporized in the weakest plot reveal of an ultimate weapon ever? Here's our big bad gun, we'll destroy shit, annnnnnd now you've blown it up. Is it too much to ask that the ultimate weapon exist for more than 10 minutes of screen time? Never even had a chance to build up any tension with that thing. From the time it was revealed to the time it was destroyed nobody else in the galaxy even had a chance to read an email about it existing. But yeah, there was a republic in this film? probably scenes from the original script from the ESB writer, before Abrams got a hold of it. 3) Thank C-3PO for the Resistance's timely arrival at Maz Kanata's castleNope didn't show this in the film. What was shown was 2 rando's, one calling the first order and the other calling the resistance. Do we give a shit that C-3PO was part of the information chain? ohhh he handed the note off to leia? really digging for that fan service here, I guess. 4) Leia kept a big?and ultimately vital?secret from HanSince I don't remember leia doing anything other than staring blankly with too much botox face I guess this is new info, what was this secret?
5) Kylo doesn't feel so great after killing Han: no shit this was in the film. he only killed him to prove to himself how emo he was.
6) The Resistance is tiny: This was shown in the film. 7) Rey doesn't just beat Kylo?she also beats the dark sidethere's another major plothole if you assume this was supposed to be important to the movie.
8) Kylo recognizes Rey: no shit, this was in the movie 9) Rey and Poe do meet?awkwardly: Who the fuck is poe again? Ace Pilot? that 1 dimensional cutout that probably had a bigger role in the film before JJ abrams rewrote the entire thing as ANH v2? He isn't a real person he's a byline/character description, maybe he'll get to become a real character in the spin off films.
10) BB-8's map triggers R2-D2's awakening: Yeah, you know this because it happens in the movie
Just got back from a second viewing, wanted to see it with my mom over the holidays because she introduced us to it as kids. Also got a chance to see it in 70mm IMAX which was pretty awesome. The only scene I noticed that utilizes the full IMAX aspect ratio was the escape from Jakku in the Falcon. I'd say both the 3d digital IMAX and 70mm were equally cool.
Only thing that stood out a little more in the second viewing, that others have commented on, was just some pacing things. Knowing what to expect it was easier to focus on the transition from scene to scene, things just felt off. The Han & Chewie thing with the freighter and then the monster chase really sticks out. The while thing just feels out of place and not like it fits.
A couple of other things were smaller, like some of the jumps between what was going on in location A and bouncing back to location B. There was one particular spot where they were trying to play together with the Rey vs. Kylo thing, but like the cut wasn't in the right place. Like it just wasn't edited quite right.
Kylo also takes his helmet off much later than I originally remembered. For some reason it felt like he did it 1/3 in and removed it many more times. But really it was very late only when he interrogated Rey. Not really here nor there, just funny I completely remembered it wrong. Maybe for me it just shows how that undid a lot of the stuff before.
Han definitely says that a 'boy' turned and undid the stuff Luke was training them. When they were attacking Starkiller Base one of the X-Wing pilots says Pope's name as they're going in. So we know it is him before Finn sees him do the Godlike streak on TIE fighters.
Anyways, I haven't been reading every post for the last week, so not particularly trying to add anything specific, just a few thoughts coming out. Don't really care how it compares to ANH, ESB, Star Trek, Citizen Kane, or the Abyss. Movie was fun and glad things are moving forward.
True, but I didnt mean just directing. This was written by Abrams according to the end credits and it blew all of the latest 3 movies by Lucas away. It was handcrafted StarWars, not CGI StarWars. I think Lucas made the right choise selling the rights to this considering his inability to even cast the prequels in a good way.
This movie was a perfect tribute to the generations that saw the original triology at the cinema, but I can see how younglings in the ages of 5-25 would think it sucked. Fortunatly it was made for the original fans that will continue to shell out money for handcrafted StarWars vs CGI StarWars where Jar-Jar scored high with the focus groups
Her theme is prolly my least favorite in the whole soundtrack. It's better when they mix it into the stronger stuff but by itself it just kinda sounds like a gay little fairy background music in a JRPG.
