As Sylas said above, when you choose your quest reward, always take comms or look at some of the vendor sold orange gear. You may also want to run a few flashpoints early on and get orange gear that way and you can just upgrade via comm mods every 10 levels or so early on (Since those levels go by so fast)

Which class are you playing?
Sith Marauder. The comms can be used for gear? I have been taking gear usually.

Yeah if you head into the merchant area of the imperial fleet you will see an equipment vendor, and a mod vendor. You can buy really good pieces of orange gear from the equipment vendor of that level range. Once you have an orange set, you can replace the mods in that orange set to automatically level it up. Also, a good way to make some money quick to get started would be to buy 2-3 of those packs from the cartel market and sell them on the market. You can get about 250k credits per. 750k helps a lot with filling in some gaps while moving quickly through the story line quests at 12x for yourself and for companions as well.

I also recommend doing the flash point daily once through group finder. Chances at good orange gear, and you also get a lot of comms for the completion of it once a day.

When you use your coms only use them on fleet, the mods/armor/etc are only 2 coms there, they are 7 (I think, w/e it was at launch) on the planets.

At least I didn't accidentally make my second character gay by not reading the [flirt] line closely enough.

Also, lol @ lightning sorc once you get the early perk that makes force storm trigger an instant chain lightning.

They used to be retarded fun. Any time I got frustrated with a character I'd logon Darth Papas and pvp. It was easy. You would DoT everyone, stand behind a pillar and storm/heal for 1m dmg. And hell if you wanted to, you can win half the maps yourself with force speed and bubble. SWTOR never really gave a shit about balance, which is a good thing.

Oh wow, so much better using the comm gear now. I was making this game way harder for myself without that stuff. So instead of updating it as I level I can buy the comms and just modify and that will automatically level up the gear?

Yea, but not sure what the best level interval to update the modifications is. I personally wanted enough basic commendations to buy the level 50 gear set when I hit 50. I was a teeny bit short, but I converted some warzone commendations to get the last piece.

I'm still very confused by all the different gear sets. I used to pvp enough to get the pvp gear sets at 20 and 40, but not much reason to do that now.

Yes. Orange gear is made up of 4 mods that determine all of its stats. There's no difference in an orange level 50 item vs an orange level 1 item with 4 level 50 mods.

If you save up you can completely upgrade all your gear every 8 levels or so. I went back every 4 levels and updated all my lowest mods, and had enough to cover well over half of them as well as some of my companion's. There's absolutely no reason to save up for the lvl 50 sets. Once you hit 47 you can blast through the Hutt quests and get to 55 pretty quick. While on Makeb (the Hutt quest planet) you can get a permanent buff that boosts your gear level up to snuff and heals you outside of combat; it makes questing a breeze and you don't have to spend a single comm on gear. At 55 you start the Revan questline (again boosts your gear level) and you get a good chunk of 162 rated gear in the process.

Once you hit 60 you can easily get enough comms to buy the lvl 50 set if you want it for looks or whatever, but don't bother getting it to level. It'd be like stopping at 90 in WoW to get Pandaria raid sets.

Make sure you always buy from the vendors on the fleet. they are 2 comms for each piece. You need a total of 9 armor/weapon (ie 8 armor + 1 hilt/barrel if single weapon, 7 armor + 2 hilt/barrel if dual wield class), 9 mods, and 7 enhancements. that's 25x2 or 50 comms for each time you upgrade all of your gear. you get 12 comms per class quest starting around lvl 10 or so and you get 3-4 class quests per planet (which works out to just shy of a complete gear upgrade per planet, or roughly 5 levels. The gear you buy is slightly higher than average for the level you are, and so it should last you a good 8-10 levels easily. basically every other planet you can upgrade all your gear and still have a ton of comms banked, just head back to the fleet and upgrade your mods whenever the quest reward gear is actually an improvement over your modded gear.

There's really no need to save comms for any particular level range. anytime after 47 you can head to Makeb which when you click on the little satellite doohickey gives you a buff that makes you and your gear lvl 55 anyway so upgrading gear is pointless. If you have Revan expac you can then start doing those flashpoints which gives you a super retardo strength droid which can solo the instances and you are really just a spectator to the storymode anyway. Still you can upgrade your gear as needed if you feel weak in the overworld stuff but once you finish revan and do the ziost planet you can buy all the 190 gear with all the extra comms you have. The only thing you are really missing at that point is a MH hilt/barrel and accessories, which you can also buy implants/earrings etc from ziost vendor and then worry about relics from the GTN. again I was almost at cap (1k) on basic comms even after buying gear every 10 levels. Makeb gives you 300 comms right off the bat.

Neato! I didn't know any of that. I was going to just kind of take every class to fifty and call it good. I have one 54ish that I got a few levels from pvp on, but I think I've only done one or two quests on Makeb, back when it came out.

So gear is sort of meaningless after you finish the story and go to Makeb?

I have no idea how anyone would ever figure any of this out in game. You go to the supply area and there are like 30 different gearsets all using strange coins.

on the outside of the supply area of fleet all the vendors are named level X Modifications or Level X gear. once you have a set of orange gear you never need to buy new gear except for looks. it's only the mods you want. On the inside ring there are all the previous end game gear from the various vendors with various types of currency (elite, ultimates, etc), the rare drop turn in gear, etc. from the various raids the game has had at the various level caps that the game has had.

the current end game raid stuff is like, 198? or 196? something like that? and now with Ziost Joe casual just leveling solo doing storymode ends up with 190 gear, which if you wanna do raiding is a better start point than the previous iterations. all the 178 and 186 gear from previous era's raiding is basically obsolete you don't need to do that to get geared to start the raid scene, if that's your thing. Personally the combat is pretty meh and the engine is starting to get rather dated, but the best part of this game was always the storymode anyway. I just treat it as a bioware RPG that you can talk to and group with other players in if you choose.

They do a mini-tutorial when you get your first orange weapon but nothing else so yeah, that's an area that's lacking. It's better than it used to be too, even discounting the recent upgrades to the fleet comm vendors.

The only bug I saw the entire way through was the speeder bike on Ziost. That quest is a hilarious mess of missed triggers.

I wound up with 2.5 mil credits which seems pretty impressive for skipping so many missions.

So the logical plan seems to be doing one of each of the 4 major archetypes on whichever faction for the legacy buffs. And I already fucked it up by leveling a second human. I was originally a BH, I just did JK, and I'll likely do 55 inquis -> agent and then whatever mirror class (probably sith warrior) if I'm not utterly sick of it by then.

Funny thing about this game - if anyone has a right to bitch about melee getting dicked over, it's here. Actual rotations instead of priority-faceroll AND legions of ranged mobs that spread all over the place AND every fucking thing has to have a knockback AND the bad is constantly dropped under the boss. If it can't be a ranged dps, I'll play it as a tank.

Do snipers get stealth or only lame-o operatives?

Holy shit... collections, bound to legacy, adaptive armor, decorations. So confused and all I've done was open my mail.

Anyone have a good reference for returning players?

Biggest question atm is the Bind to Legacy gear. Got some starfigher orange gear in the mail. How is this shared among your toons? Is there a best way or, vice versa, are there any pitfalls to avoid?

Does the gear go into your collection somehow and then accessible by all your toons or do you have to mail it back and forth? Also, what happens to the mods you are using in it if you mail it to another toon?

Thanks in advance for any clarity you can provide.

I should probably start a level 1 toon to get a feel for things, but just didn't want to screw anything up with this adaptive, bind on legacy armor that I opened.

Adaptive armor means any class can wear it without an armor penalty. It was meant to solve the original problem of all social gear being light armor and classes that wore medium/heavy weren't getting full armor bonuses.

Bind to legacy means you can mail it to any of your toons or transfer through a legacy bank (strongholds only, although you can visit other people's houses and use theirs). Most people used this for generic tank/healer companion gear sets and simply swapped between all characters. Nowadays it's mainly used to transfer high-end mods over to an artifice/cybertech for reverse engineering.

Collections are for cartel market items only, if you equip an item or an entire gear set you can pay coins to unlock for all characters and spawn a free set. This includes +41 color crystals which you can spawn infinitely for level 10 characters.
