What about that new8" Dell with Windows 8? Supposed to be pretty boss for $300. Think there's some stylus issues right now but that should get fixed with a firmware update.

Anyways, just throwing another name on the pile in that form factor. Heard good things.

And this is just anecdotal, but when my mother was finally upgrading from her Blackberry a year or so ago she got an Android phone and hated it. Just confused the shit out of her(she's old). So my dad went out and got her a Nokia Lumia and she loves it. So maybe with the less tech savvy folks Windows 8 is more of a solid option.

Not bad, I think we will probably try to test a few of them to see what she likes. She's not computer-stupid, but she's not computer-savvy either.

I honestly don't know why anyone would get an iPad mini over a Nexus 7. Hell, you can get his & hers Nexus 7s for like $50 more than a single iPad mini

Planning to pick up my mom an e-reader/tablet for Christmas. A little torn on what to get her. I imagine 99% of its use will be reading novels but it would probably need to display pdfs as well. Ideally I'm looking for something with a 10in screen since her eyes aren't all that great anymore. I'm planning to load it with some stuff that might interest her to try and get he into using it. Don't think any modern devices are filled with drm bullshit anymore but that would be a no go.

I would say fuck it and just get her a 10in tab or something but I'm afraid she will be too scared to carry it around with her or use it that often. She did manage to shatter my nexus 7 in less than 48 hours while I was visiting. Anyone have a suggestion for a 10in e-ink or a moderately priced 10in tablet I won't feel too bad about replacing after she breaks the first one?

If it's going to be for books, get whatever e-ink device that fits your needs. Nothing comes close to e-ink when to comes to actually reading. Btw, on any size kindles / nooks or whatever you can make the text huge and the pages turn fast so her eyesight shouldn't be a problem.

My $129 Nook HD+ arrived today. It came in a standard Nook box. The unit is in brand new condition. The only way you'd know it was a refurb is by the tape that holds the box closed. It has the word refurb on it.

Definitely going to put regular Android on it.

Having had both, I kept the iPad mini. The android ecosystem isn't really optimized for tablet apps. They usually just stretch out phone apps. By contrast, iPad apps are usually better looking, made for tablets and ios is just better optimized, IMO.

So maybe just try a new launcher before you go through the whole process of rooting and loading a new ROM?

Was just a suggestion because a different launcher can change the entire feel of an android device. If you said that in the first place no one would have butt in. No need to be cunty about it.
