Cascadian Dark Ales (Black IPA)

What I am referring to are not Black IPAs. They were all called "Cascading Dark Ales" at the bars I went to while in Portland OR and they tasted quite a bit different from a Black IPA

I know I've had a handful of them but usually at a bar and never pay attention to names, I'll keep my eye out for you Khane.

Birth of a New Style: Cascadian Dark Ale
What is a Cascadian Dark Ale?

It's Cascadian, named after the park in OR:Cascadia State Park - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unless it's some new style that's horrendously similar to the recognized style. I've been to two separate lectures on the topic of "naming the new style" (one by the brewer at Deschutes, the other by the found of Stone),

Well, I'm not gonna pretend I know much more than what was told to me but every bar had it listed as a CDA (Cascading Dark Ale) and when I actually said "Oh it sounds like a black IPA" I got seriously scoffed at. And after I tasted it I had to agree with them. Sam Adam's makes a Black IPA. The CDAs I had while in Portland tasted nothing like that. /shrug. I've only ever been out there once so I really have no idea.

I've only heard Cascadian Dark Ale as well. There was a big hoopla because they wanted to get it named as an official style but they (the Brewers Association) didn't want to regionalize the style so they wanted it listed as Black IPA and all the brewers up here who think they invented the style got pissed, because you know, there aren't ANY other styles with region-based names... You sure you didn't already enjoy a few when you decided they were cascading?

Then again I don't know for sure, Portland may have some new trend I am not aware of. How were the "Cascading" Dark Ales different than Black IPAs?

*edit: What I have found from Portland so far are all listed as Cascadian:
Deschutes- Hop In The Dark
Laurelwood- Heart Of Darkness
Hopworks Urban- Secession

I can't quite describe it but "Black IPAs" have been around for a while and all the ones I've ever had were very light on hops and basically just a watered down stout essentially. They just had nothing to them. The CDAs I had (by the way Cascadian is what I called them after I looked them up too, I think I even posted in this thread calling them that originally, but my friend in Portland told me that wasn't the name when I linked it to him and asked if that was what we had been drinking when I was visiting) actually had flavor and body. Of course that could just be because those were good and the others were bad even though they were the same style, but the hipsters in Portland definitely made it a point to say "NO" when I asked if it was a Black IPA.

tl;dr I defer to you guys on the true name/style of the beer, my friend was probably just wrong and I couldn't read at the bars we went to. All I know is they were delicious, I've never heard of or seen a CDA anywhere else, and I wish I could get my hands on them here on the East Coast.

Ballast Point makes a Black IPA called Black Eye which isn't very Black IPA-like at all. Way more flavor. Not sure if it's similar or not but is sounds like it could be.

There's a huge divergence in the CDA style, as the BJCP are fuddyduddys. Here's the link to the presentation where they brought in Black IPAs:http://www.bjcp.org/docs/NHC2014-styles.pdf
The worst part is the "true to style" taste is "just like a normal IPA, but darker", which is fucking stupid (Beer. Birra. Bier. - A blog about beer and brewing.: Revised BJCP Guidelines for IPA). The examples (Deschutes is my go-to example) above aren't "black/dark colored IPAs" but a distinct category with much more flavor that is commonly found in "normal" IPAs.

Fuck that's a lot of quotes. I'm trying to use them to represent sarcasm and annoyance. I don't think it's working.

tl;dr: Cascadian Dark Ales SHOULD be a separate category that's hoppy and malty and good. Black IPAs should be "dark colored IPAs". They aren't because the people who "officially" makes styles suck at life.

We should have a Rerolled SF Beer Week party.
I would be down. I am going to make it over to the city in some fashion during that week, so having a plan on meeting up with people would just be a bonus.

Man, that would be fun. I've got family in Petaluma and Novato AND a place to stay in Santa Rosa... but I also have a 5 month old and a wife who would not be impressed.

Sounds like a lame excuse. Not sure where you live currently but it sounds like an easy decision. Go to the family in Novato and leave your wife, then come meet up with us!

I haven't finished sorting through the entire schedule and adding events to my itinerary, but when I finish I'll share the schedule with you. I always choose way too many things. I can never make them all.

That would be cool, and I can see if there would be a way to make any of it. As you mentioned before, try and make sure there is a day in there to hit up Toronado so we can get some Pliny the Younger!

Had a sample of Oakshire white chocolate stout, my mind was blown. Looks like an Amber almost but is super chocolatey and rich. Plan on going back to get a growler filed soon.

Is it really a white chocolate flavor or closer to just regular chocolate? Not a huge choco fan but really like the white.

One of the Beer Week events is a Northwest Breweries night. Cascade will be in attendance. I'll check this Cascadian Dark Ale thing.

I'm pretty sure Cascade does only sours. Good news is they are really good at it.
Cascade was one of the places I went to, more than once, while I was in Portland. Almost entirely sours but they did have some other stuff. And the sours were really good as opiate said

Another one bites the dust:Elysian Brewing sold to Anheuser-Busch InBev - New School Beer

I don't begrudge these breweries for cashing out, some of the owners are getting life-changing amounts of money. But I will say the same thing I did when Goose Island and 10 Barrel sold out, I don't care if the beer doesn't change one bit, I will not buy products from these breweries anymore. Each dollar that goes to InBev goes towards stifling craft beer at every turn. From advertising to predatory pricing to political lobbying, InBev is undoubtedly an enemy of craft beer.
